Book Synopsis A Reconnaissance of the Geology of the Sandy Coastal Areas of Eastern Greece and the Peloponnese by : John Christian Kraft
Download or read book A Reconnaissance of the Geology of the Sandy Coastal Areas of Eastern Greece and the Peloponnese written by John Christian Kraft and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compilation of field observations on coastal morphology in eastern Greece and the Peloponnese is presented. This study of coastal sedimentarry environments presents a plan for detailed analysis of rates of coastal change on the sandy coastal plains at the heads of the major embayments of the coast of southern and eastern Greece. Processes of coastal erosion and deposition are actively reforming the sandy coasts of Greece. A detailed understanding of rates of change of these coastal environments is of use in local construction and coastal protection problems as well as in forming an understanding of the paleogeography of coastal change and projection of future anticipated changes in coastal morphology. In addition, models of coastal change in sandy coastal plains bounded by rocky, cliff-lined embayments have been formed. These may prove to be useful in broader applications elsewhere. (Author).

Book Synopsis Greek Transport Amphorae by : I. K. Whitbread
Download or read book Greek Transport Amphorae written by I. K. Whitbread and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five and a half centuries amphorae were used by the ancient Greeks to transport olive oil, wine and other liquid and semi-liquid products. The analysis of this distinctive pot form now provides our main source of information on the lost organic staples of the classical economy. Undiagnostic fragmentary amphorae remains are often the most common ceramic find during excavations in the Mediterranean, and until now a methodology has been lacking for their effective study. Traditionally chronological and regional types have been established by stylistic analysis and the incomplete evidence of administrative stamps. In this book Whitbread surveys this methodology but compares it with the results of his own extensive work on the ceramic petrology of Greek amphorae. His pioneering approach not only reveals new information about Greek trade but also sheds fascinating light on the production of these commonly found vessels.

Book Synopsis Terroir by : James E. Wilson (Geologist)
Download or read book Terroir written by James E. Wilson (Geologist) and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French word terroir is used to describe all the ecological factors that make a particular type of wine special to the region of its origin. James E. Wilson uses his training as a geologist and his years of research in the wine regions of France to fully examine the concept of terroir. The result combines natural history, social history, and scientific study, making this a unique book that all wine connoisseurs and professionals will want close at hand. In Part One Wilson introduces the full range of environmental factors that together form terroir. He explains France's geological foundation; its soil, considered the "soul" of a vineyard; the various climates and microclimates; the vines, their history and how each type has evolved; and the role that humans--from ancient monks to modern enologists--have played in viticulture. Part Two examines the history and habitat of each of France's major wine regions. Wilson explores the question of why one site yields great wines while an adjacent site yields wines of lesser quality. He also looks at cultural influences such as migration and trade and at the adaptations made by centuries of vignerons to produce distinctive wine styles. Wilson skillfully presents both technical information and personal anecdotes, and the book's photographs, maps, and geologic renderings are extremely helpful. The appendices contain a glossary and information on the labeling of French wines. With a wealth of information explained in clear English, Wilson's book enables wine readers to understand and appreciate the mystique of terroir.
