Book Synopsis Esotericism in African American Religious Experience by :
Download or read book Esotericism in African American Religious Experience written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Esotericism in African American Religious Experience: “There is a Mystery” ..., Stephen C. Finley, Margarita Simon Guillory, and Hugh R. Page, Jr. assemble twenty groundbreaking essays that provide a rationale and parameters for Africana Esoteric Studies (AES): a new trans-disciplinary enterprise focused on the investigation of esoteric lore and practices in Africa and the African Diaspora. The goals of this new field — while akin to those of Religious Studies, Africana Studies, and Western Esoteric Studies — are focused on the impulses that give rise to Africana Esoteric Traditions (AETs) and the ways in which they can be understood as loci where issues such as race, ethnicity, and identity are engaged; and in which identity, embodiment, resistance, and meaning are negotiated.

Book Synopsis With Mortal Voice by : John T. Shawcross
Download or read book With Mortal Voice written by John T. Shawcross and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More often than not, critics have looked upon Milton's great epic not as a literary work but rather as a theological tract or a display of Renaissance learning. In this book John Shawcross seeks to redress that critical imbalance by examining the poem for its literary values. In doing so he reveals the scope and depth of Milton's poetic craftsmanship in his control of such elements as structure, myth, style, and language; and he offers new approaches to reading Paradise Lost as a literary masterpiece rather than a relic of religious history.

In the intervening years, user-centered design has expanded to undertake the needs of differently abled users and global populations as well as the design of complex systems and services. Beautiful Users explores the changing relationship between designers and users and considers a range of design methodologies and practices, from user research to hacking, open source, and the maker culture.

Book Synopsis Numerology of Astrology by : Lynn Buess
Download or read book Numerology of Astrology written by Lynn Buess and published by Light Technology Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12-25 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lynn Buess has done it again! As an innovator in the consciousness and self-awareness field for over forty years, he has now contributed a decidedly unique perspective of the time-honored system of astrology, helping humanity further understand its relationship to the universe. With this latest contribution to self-growth, Lynn offers an original perspective of numerology — this time with the combination of numerological characteristics and astrological influences. He not only writes from an intellectual viewpoint but as someone who has experienced glimpses of cosmic consciousness. Like most of his works, it is his hope that this volume will help seekers better connect to their cosmic memories of being both human and eternal in nature. Experience all the signs of the zodiac in minute detail: Aries • Taurus • Gemini • Cancer • Leo • Virgo • Libra • Scorpio • Sagittarius • Capricorn • Aquarius • Pisces It is my feeling that the sun degree serves a role of pinpointing just where the soul has the opportunity to make significant strides in personal growth or potentially stumble into a setback. A combination of the numerical value of the degree and the sun sign are blended together to offer insight about the nature of that commitment. — Lynn Buess, MA, EdS
Download or read book Unit Operations written by Ian Bogost and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008-01-25 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Unit Operations, Ian Bogost argues that similar principles underlie both literary theory and computation, proposing a literary-technical theory that can be used to analyze particular videogames. Moreover, this approach can be applied beyond videogames: Bogost suggests that any medium—from videogames to poetry, literature, cinema, or art—can be read as a configurative system of discrete, interlocking units of meaning, and he illustrates this method of analysis with examples from all these fields. The marriage of literary theory and information technology, he argues, will help humanists take technology more seriously and hep technologists better understand software and videogames as cultural artifacts. This approach is especially useful for the comparative analysis of digital and nondigital artifacts and allows scholars from other fields who are interested in studying videogames to avoid the esoteric isolation of "game studies." The richness of Bogost's comparative approach can be seen in his discussions of works by such philosophers and theorists as Plato, Badiou, Zizek, and McLuhan, and in his analysis of numerous videogames including Pong, Half-Life, and Star Wars Galaxies. Bogost draws on object technology and complex adaptive systems theory for his method of unit analysis, underscoring the configurative aspects of a wide variety of human processes. His extended analysis of freedom in large virtual spaces examines Grand Theft Auto 3, The Legend of Zelda, Flaubert's Madame Bovary, and Joyce's Ulysses. In Unit Operations, Bogost not only offers a new methodology for videogame criticism but argues for the possibility of real collaboration between the humanities and information technology.

Download or read book Blood Brothers written by B. Lintner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From pirates singing Ricky Martin to mob hits carried out with samurai swords, Bertil Lintner offers a fascinating look at organized crime in the Asia Pacific. Both Western and Asian pundits assert that shady deals are an Asian way of life. Some argue that corruption and illicit business ventures - gambling, prostitution, drug trafficking, gun running, oil smuggling - are entrenched parts of the Asian value system. Yet many Asian leaders maintain that their cities are safer than Sydney, Amsterdam, New York, and Los Angeles. Making use of expertise gained from twenty years of living in Asia, Lintner exposes the role crime plays in the countries of the Far East. In Blood Brothers , he takes you inside the criminal fraternities of Asia, examining these networks and their past histories in order to answer one question: How are civil societies all over the world to be protected from the worst excesses of increasingly globalised mobsters?

Download or read book The Celts written by M. Chapman and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992-09-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Celts are commonly considered to be one of the great peoples of Europe, with continuous racial, cultural and linguistic genealogy from the Iron Age to the modern-day 'Celtic fringe'. This book shows, in contrast, that the Celts, as they have been known and understood over two thousand years, are simply the 'other' of the dominant cultural and political traditions of Europe. It is this continuous 'otherness' which lends them apparent continuity and substance.
