Mein Ziel war es, die Infinitesimalrechnung (den "Calculus") und die Grundlagen der Analysis in der Weise nebeneinander zu entwickeln, daß die aUge meinen Sätze der Grundlagen laufend an konkreten Beispielen und Anwendungen erprobt werden können. Dabei habe ich mich bemüht, die zentralen Begriffe und Sätze jeweils in anschaulicher Sprache vorzubereiten und zu motivieren. Entscheidend ist die Frage des richtigen Maßes an mathemati scher Strenge, Allgemeinheit und Abstraktion. Abgesehen von den logischen und arithmetischen Grundlagen, wo ich mich auf einen "naiven" Standpunkt gestellt habe, bin ich darauf ausgewesen, eine strenge oder eben: eine richtige Analysis abzuliefern. Dieses Vor haben ist zu Beginn einfach, wird aber zusehends schwieriger, da die betrachteten Situationen immer komplizierter und in der geometri schen Beschreibung aufwendiger werden. An Allgemeinheit habe ich soviel eingebaut, wie ein Student in den ersten Studienjahren (und manch einer im ganzen Leben) vernünftiger Weise braucht. Auf das Lebesguesche Integral und den schiefen Differentialkalkül wurde also verzichtet; dafür findet man z. B. eine ausführliche Technik des Integrierens und eine modeme Darstellung der Vektoranalysis, wie sie vom Physiker, aber auch vom Ingenieur benötigt wird. Immerhin war ich bestrebt, von Anfang an mit den richtigen und über diese "Analysis" hinaus fruchtbaren Begriffen zu arbeiten; dabei wurde ein höheres Niveau der Abstraktion gerne in Kauf ge nommen, wenn das Wesentliche dafür besser zur Geltung kam.
