Book excerpt: RADIO REPLIES: VOLUMES 1 TO 3 REVEREND CHARLES MORTIMER CARTY REVEREND LESLIE RUMBLE — A Catholic Classic! — 4,374 Questions and Answers, Over 650,000 Words — Includes an Active Index, Table of Contents and Layered NCX Navigation — Includes Illustrations by Gustave Dore Paperback Editions: Volume 1: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-431-7 Volume 2: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-432-4 Volume 3: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-433-1 A classic of Catholic apologetics, widely considered to be among the most effective and comprehensive defenses of Catholicism ever published. Concise, unflinching and compelling answers to literally thousands of questions regarding the teaching of the Catholic Church. Fathers Rumble (a former Protestant) and Carty have created an indispensable resource for anyone looking to explain the truth of Catholicism to curious non-Catholics. Rev. Dr. Leslie Rumble, M.S.C. was the host of a popular weekly radio show in Australia called “Question Box.” Starting in 1928, he spent five years on air answering questions about faith, religion, and morality from the Catholic perspective. He challenged his audience to challenge him with their hard questions about the Catholic Church. If the Church is to be abused and treated like a criminal, then “she has a right to be heard,” he said. Out of this was born the first edition of “Radio Replies,” published in Australia. Rev. Charles Mortimer Carty was a ‘street preacher’ and host of “Catholic Radio Hour,” broadcast out of St. Paul, Minnesota. “I realized that this priest in Australia was doing exactly the same work I was doing here in St. Paul,” wrote Fr. Carty. And so began a publishing collaboration that led to the phenomenally popular American edition of “Radio Replies,” two subsequent volumes, and over a dozen other publications defending Catholic teaching. Book excerpt: The Handbook of European History 1400-1600 brings together the best scholarship into an array of topical chapters that present current knowledge and thinking in ways useful to the specialist and accessible to students and to the educated non-specialist. Forty-one leading scholars in this field of history present the state of knowledge about the grand themes, main controversies and fruitful directions for research of European history in this era. Volume 1 (Structures and Assertions) described the people, lands, religions and political structures which define the setting for this historical period. Volume 2 (Visions, Programs, Outcomes) covers the early stages of the process by which newly established confessional structures began to work their way among the populace.

Baptized people leave the church, adolescents stop attending shortly after they are confirmed, supposedly indissoluble marriages regularly dissolve, few go to confession, and many do not believe in transubstantiation. Drawing upon his decades-long study of the sacraments, Martos reveals how teachings that seemed rooted in the scriptures and Catholic life have become unmoored from the contexts in which they arose, and why seemingly eternal truths are actually historically relative. After carefully constructing Catholic teaching from the church's own documents, he deconstructs it by demonstrating how biblical passages were misconstrued by patristic authors and how patristic writings were misunderstood by medieval scholastics. The long process of misinterpretation culminated in the dogmatic pronouncements of the Council of Trent, which continues to dominate Catholic thinking about the church's religious ceremonies. If the sacraments are released from their dogmatic baggage, Martos believes that the spiritual realities they symbolize can be celebrated in any human culture without being tied to their traditional rites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honest rituals are ceremonial actions that celebrate what is actually happening in people’s lives. Religious rituals, however, often celebrate beliefs and doctrines (e.g., the birth of Christ, God’s forgiveness of sins, or the gifts of the Holy Spirit) that have little to do with people’s experience. Martos argues that early Christian rituals were grounded in experiences such as conversion, community, commitment, and self-giving. Lacking a vocabulary to name such experiences, the authors of the New Testament and other early documents resorted to metaphors such as baptism into Christ, receiving the Holy Spirit, forgiveness by God, and the presence of Christ during worship. By the fourth century, however, those metaphors were taken to be unexperienced metaphysical realities rather than experienced realities. The medieval schoolmen developed philosophical explanations of what went on in church rituals, and the Catholic Church continues to teach that its sacraments are automatically effective despite growing evidence to the contrary. What if religious rituals were to regain their original authenticity? What if the guiding value in designing church ceremonies was honesty rather than liturgical correctness? After liberating the reader from doctrinal constraints, Martos invites Catholics into a re-visioning of the traditional sacraments and a reawakening of ritual imagination in non-Western cultures.
