Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most exciting areas of cancer research now is the development of agents which can target signal transduction pathways that are activated inappropriately in malignant cells. The understanding of the molecular abnormalities which distinguish malignant cells from their normal counterparts has grown tremendously. This volume summarizes the current research on the role that signal transduction pathways play in the pathogenesis of cancer and how this knowledge may be used to develop the next generation of more effective and less toxic anticancer agents. Series Editor comments: "The biologic behavior of both normal and cancer cells is determined by critical signal transduction pathways. This text provides a comprehensive review of the field. Leading investigators discuss key molecules that may prove to be important diagnostic and/or therapeutic targets."

Book excerpt: Now in paperback, the Oxford Textbook of Oncology reflects current best practice in the multidisciplinary management of cancer, written and edited by internationally recognised leaders in the field. Structured in six sections, the book provides an accessible scientific basis to the key topics of oncology, examining how cancer cells grow and function, as well as discussing the aetiology of cancer, and the general principles governing modern approaches to oncology treatment. The book examines the challenges presented by the treatment of cancer on a larger scale within population groups, and the importance of recognising and supporting the needs of individual patients, both during and after treatment. A series of disease-oriented, case-based chapters, ranging from acute leukaemia to colon cancer, highlight the various approaches available for managing the cancer patient, including the translational application of cancer science in order to personalise treatment. The advice imparted in these cases has relevance worldwide, and reflects a modern approach to cancer care. The Oxford Textbook of Oncology provides a comprehensive account of the multiple aspects of best practice in the discipline, making it an indispensable resource for oncologists of all grades and subspecialty interests.

Book excerpt: This book elaborates on drug delivery targeting via intracellular delivery, specifically through the Receptor Mediated Endocytosis (RME) approach, due to the involvement of cellular receptors in various grave diseases. Targeted delivery relies on two basic approaches, passive and active targeting. While passive targeting approaches have shown great promise, the improved selectivity achieved with active targeting approaches has resulted in significantly higher efficacy. Interestingly there are numerous strategies for active targeting, many of which are already highlighted in , Targeted Drug Delivery: Concepts and Applications. Nevertheless an exciting and practical strategy for active targeting, which could enable high intracellular delivery, is through exploitation of RME. Cells in the body express receptors to enable various physiological and biochemical processes. As a result, many of these receptors are overexpressed in pathological conditions, or newer receptors expressed due to defective cellular functioning. RME is based on exploitation of such receptors to achieve intracellular delivery. While targeted delivery can have manifold applications, in this book we focus on two major and challenging therapeutic areas; i) Cancer and ii) Infectious Diseases. Targeted Intracellular Drug Delivery by Receptor Medicated Endocytosis discusses the major receptors that are useful for targeted delivery for these afflictions. A major section of this book is dedicated to details regarding their occurrence and location, the recognition domain of the receptor, structure activity relationship of substrate /ligand for selective binding, ligands explored, antagonists for ligand binding and relevance of these aspects for therapy of cancer and infectious diseases. These facets are elucidated with the help of specific examples from academic research and also emphasize commercial products, wherever relevant. In vitro cellular models relied on for assessing receptor mediated cellular targeting and in vivo models depicting clinical efficacy are focused on in a separate section. Finally, we briefly discuss the regulatory and toxicity issues that may be associated specifically with the RME approach of intracellular drug delivery.

Book excerpt: This two-volume treatise, the collected effort of more than 50 authors, represents the first comprehensive survey of the chemistry and biology of the set of molecules known as peptide growth factors. Although there have been many symposia on this topic, and numerous publications of reviews dealing with selected subsets of growth factors, the entire field has never been covered in a single treatise. It is essential to do this at the present time, as the number of journal articles on peptide growth factors now makes it almost impossible for anyone person to stay informed on this subject by reading the primary literature. At the same time it is becoming increasingly apparent that these of universal importance in biology and medicine and that the substances are original classification of these molecules, based on the laboratory setting of their discovery, as "growth factors," "lymphokines," "cytokines," or "colony stimulating factors," was quite artifactual; they are in fact the basis of a com mon language for intercellular communication. As a set they affect essentially every cell in the body, and in this regard they provide the basis to develop a unified science of cell biology, germane to all of biomedical research. This treatise is divided into four main sections. After three introductory chapters, its principal focus is the detailed description of each of the major peptide growth factors in 26 individual chapters.

Book excerpt: It is now apparent that several fields of investigation are converging upon each other as the goal of finding a practical way to prevent cancer is pursued. The present monograph represents the efforts of an interdisciplinary ESO Task Force that was convened to assess interactions of peptide growth factors and steroid-like molecules in the prevention of cancer. Each of the participants in the Task Force represents a differentscientific discipline, and the monogrph is intended to be a synthesis of their different approaches to the common problem of cancer prevention. It is hoped that the reader will find this monograph to be of use in the evaluation of both preclinical and clinical approaches to the major issues that face us in chemoprevention. It is clear that prevention of cancer is an idea whose time has come, and the problem now is to implement the most effective approaches toward achieving the desired goals.

Book excerpt: Growth factors are elaborated to control the growth of cells in such physiological processes as wound healing, tissue regeneration and the immune response. Abnormal production of these growth factors, their receptors or intracellular med!ators of their action may lead to disease states including oncogenesis. This volume will focus on exciting developments in defining the precise molecular lesions that permit the conversion of controlled proliferative signals to neoplasia, on the possible involvement of growth factors in the development of blood vessel diseases as seen in diabetes and atherosclerosis, on the altered immune surveillance that leads to autoimmunity and on the fundamental mechanisms by which growth factors signal their target cells. We expect that the contents of this volume will help promote understanding of the role of these fundamental biological processes and their alterations in a wide variety of disease states and stimulate new investi gations in this important area of biomedical research. Book excerpt: Protooncogenes and Growth Factors in Steroid Hormone Induced Growth and Differentiation reviews current information regarding the complex nature of hormone-induced cell growth and differentiation. The contributors examine the emerging consensus that protooncogenes and growth factors mediate perhaps the most crucial steps leading to cell growth and differentiation. The primary objective of this book is to unite the status of current research related to protooncogenes and growth factors from diverse physiological systems to help readers gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Leading researchers have contributed outstanding chapters pertaining to steroid hormone-regulated cell growth and differentiation in normal and/or neoplastic tissues. This book will appeal to basic science researchers, clinicians, industrial researchers, and graduate students.
