Book excerpt: As higher education in the United States comes out from under the COVID-19 Pandemic, many challenges are facing educational leaders as they prepare for the future. From declining enrollments and interest in obtaining a college degree to the increasing costs of higher education, much of what the future holds for higher education will require new and innovative ideas to deal with the current trends. Just as higher education was drastically affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic, the United States health care system was on the verge of collapse and will now require new and innovative ideas as well as it moves into the future. The foundation of this research was created where these two systems come together and, while not observed by many, the future of both will be significantly impacted by the other. The education of Allied Health / Health Science professions was at one time held solely in the on the job training experiences have now moved into the higher education setting in most locations. This movement has had a profound impact on the Allied Health / Health Science professions through educational recognition, while significantly affecting higher education through the development of these educational programs. This transition has married the two in ways that will require both to work together to meet the needs of the future. Utilizing Likert Scale surveys of the key leadership of Allied Health / Health Science programs and the higher education leadership the understanding of this partnership was examined with a focus on the implications on higher education. Initial information provided showed that while all participants believed that Allied Health / Health Science programs were important not only to their home institutions, but to their immediate communities as well. While the perceived importance of the programs was agreed upon it was the support and recognition of these programs where the groups differed in opinion. It is the details of these differences where both higher education and health care in the United States have the opportunity to create a sustainable and mutually beneficial partnership moving forward.

Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine study Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001) recommended that an interdisciplinary summit be held to further reform of health professions education in order to enhance quality and patient safety. Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality is the follow up to that summit, held in June 2002, where 150 participants across disciplines and occupations developed ideas about how to integrate a core set of competencies into health professions education. These core competencies include patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics. This book recommends a mix of approaches to health education improvement, including those related to oversight processes, the training environment, research, public reporting, and leadership. Educators, administrators, and health professionals can use this book to help achieve an approach to education that better prepares clinicians to meet both the needs of patients and the requirements of a changing health care system.

This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This current Research Topic does not derive directly from Boyer’s Model of Scholarship, but nonetheless represents a well-timed exploration and example of where higher education has progressed in bringing the innovative, integrative conceptualization of higher education scholarship and practice laid out by Boyer, to realization through the growing arena of undergraduate public health programs. At the same time, the authors included here were invited to specifically address a second arena of scholarly practice associated with additional elements of Boyer’s legacy, effective High-Impact Practices (HIPs) - practices that engage students, faculty and often broader communities in integrative learning that connect academic and extra-academic learning environments. Undergraduate public health programs are perfectly positioned to provide a framework for integrated learning through High-Impact Practices. Such practices encompass not only the essential learning outcomes that employers continue to demand – critical thinking, working with diverse others, written and oral communications, ethics, analysis, etc. – but also a curriculum that is scaffolded and replete with opportunities to practice and enhance performance and application of knowledge and abilities to important personal, social and global challenges and needs.

Book Synopsis Transforming Health and Social Education to Include a Greater Focus on Public Health Education in the Curriculum by : Sharon Brownie
Download or read book Transforming Health and Social Education to Include a Greater Focus on Public Health Education in the Curriculum written by Sharon Brownie and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now more than ever, an increased emphasis is needed on educational changes and innovations to effectively prepare health and social service professionals for 21st-century practice. Earlier work of the Lancet Independent Global Commission has been instrumental in validating the need for curricula change to include a focus on social determinants, public health priorities, and strategies to sustain healthy communities. The need to further strengthen the public health focus within health and social service education has been fuelled by the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing recognition of specific issues challenging society such as that highlighted within the technical report recently released by the World Health Organization recognizing Parkinson’s Disease as a public health issue. Each is an example of the need to prepare a future health and social service workforce well equipped in responding to major public health issues while contributing to global health and human wellbeing. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide additional evidence-based contributions to strengthen the public health focus in health and social service education. We aim to commission and publish a broad range of works including original research, case studies, pedogeological innovations, curriculum developments, program evaluations, and debate.
