The policies and practices are modeled after those in the United States and endorsed by such international organizations as UNESCO and the United Nations. One purpose of this dissertation is to present an overview of inclusion from an international perspective-its history, purpose, principles, and practice. A second purpose is to present two case studies of inclusion practices based on the experiences of two Saudi Arabian students. A series of interviews were conducted to develop case studies based studies on the educational experience of two Saudi Arabian young people.

Book excerpt: This book is a memoir of a boy spending his younger years with his family in an American oil camp in the early 50's. A very warm, interesting, informative read. The pictures in the book show that it was much like a military base, and in fact most of the executives and workers had served in the military during WWII. The book was also a blast from the past for any baby boomer who grew up in a time when wives didn't have to work and children could play unsupervised (even in Saudi Arabia). " Warm, personal and often funny, this easy-reading book will surely bring many fond memories to anybody who worked for Saudi Aramco." - Reader.

Book excerpt: This book uses the youth life stage as a window through which to view all domains of life in present-day Saudi Arabia: family life, education, the impact of new media, the labour market, religion and politics. The authors draw extensively on their interviews with 25-35 year olds, selected so as to represent the life chances of males and females who grow up in different socio-economic strata, and typically face different futures. The book presents an account of the ways in which family life, education, religion, employment and the housing regimes interlock, and how and why this interlocking is subject to increasing stresses. The chapters, which are built on documentary research, official published statistics and the authors’ original evidence, provide invaluable insights into Saudi youth, which has never before been examined in such depth. Youth in Saudi Arabia will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including Sociology, Politics and Middle East Studies.

Book excerpt: As the western world’s most wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden has fought to keep his personal life a mystery – loyalty and fear keeping those who know him from speaking out – until now. For the first time, two of Osama’s closest family members, his first wife Najwa and their fourth son Omar, go behind the headlines to reveal the truth about the character and life of a man feared and revered around the globe. In gripping detail, they recount the drama, tensions, and everyday activities of the man they knew as a husband and father. Married at fifteen, Najwa describes the transformation of the quiet, serious young man she fell in love with into an authoritarian husband and stern father, an entrepreneur, and – finally – the leader of a complex international terrorist network. Uprooted from a life of extraordinary luxury and privilege in Saudi Arabia, they suddenly found themselves living life on the run, fleeing from country to country under assumed names and fake passports. Omar describes how he and his siblings were brought up in remote ranches and fortified Afghani mountain camps, handling Kalashnikovs and learning desert survival skills. Their eventual escape from Afghanistan would come just days before the terrible events of 9/11 changed the world forever. With unprecedented access and exclusive family photographs, Jean Sasson, author of the bestselling Princess, presents the story that we were never meant to hear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges for young people making the transition to adulthood are greater today than ever before. Globalization, with its power to reach across national boundaries and into the smallest communities, carries with it the transformative power of new markets and new technology. At the same time, globalization brings with it new ideas and lifestyles that can conflict with traditional norms and values. And while the economic benefits are potentially enormous, the actual course of globalization has not been without its critics who charge that, to date, the gains have been very unevenly distributed, generating a new set of problems associated with rising inequality and social polarization. Regardless of how the globalization debate is resolved, it is clear that as broad global forces transform the world in which the next generation will live and work, the choices that today's young people make or others make on their behalf will facilitate or constrain their success as adults. Traditional expectations regarding future employment prospects and life experiences are no longer valid. Growing Up Global examines how the transition to adulthood is changing in developing countries, and what the implications of these changes might be for those responsible for designing youth policies and programs, in particular, those affecting adolescent reproductive health. The report sets forth a framework that identifies criteria for successful transitions in the context of contemporary global changes for five key adult roles: adult worker, citizen and community participant, spouse, parent, and household manager.

Book excerpt: “Ilyasah Shabazz has written a compelling and lyrical coming-of-age story as well as a candid and heart-warming tribute to her parents. Growing Up X is destined to become a classic.” –SPIKE LEE February 21, 1965: Malcolm X is assassinated in Harlem’s Audubon Ballroom. June 23, 1997: After surviving for a remarkable twenty-two days, his widow, Betty Shabazz, dies of burns suffered in a fire. In the years between, their six daughters reach adulthood, forged by the memory of their parents’ love, the meaning of their cause, and the power of their faith. Now, at long last, one of them has recorded that tumultuous journey in an unforgettable memoir: Growing Up X. Born in 1962, Ilyasah was the middle child, a rambunctious livewire who fought for–and won–attention in an all-female household. She carried on the legacy of a renowned father and indomitable mother while navigating childhood and, along the way, learning to do the hustle. She was a different color from other kids at camp and yet, years later as a young woman, was not radical enough for her college classmates. Her story is, sbove all else, a tribute to a mother of almost unimaginable forbearance, a woman who, “from that day at the Audubon when she heard the shots and threw her body on [ours, never] stopped shielding her children.”

Book excerpt: "While 9/11 and its aftermath created a traumatic turning point for most of the writers in this book, it is telling that none of their essays begin with that moment. These young people were living, probing, and shifting their Muslim identities long before 9/11. . . . I've heard it said that the second generation never asks the first about its story, but nearly all the essays in this book include long, intimate portrayals of Muslim family life, often going back generations. These young Muslims are constantly negotiating the differences between families for whom faith and culture were matters of honor and North America's youth culture, with its emphasis on questioning, exploring, and inventing one’s own destiny."—from the Introduction by Eboo Patel InGrowing Up Muslim, Andrew Garrod and Robert Kilkenny present fourteen personal essays by college students of the Muslim faith who are themselves immigrants or are the children of immigrants to the United States. In their essays, the students grapple with matters of ethnicity, religious prejudice and misunderstanding, and what is termed Islamophobia. The fact of 9/11 and subsequent surveillance and suspicion of Islamic Americans (particularly those hailing from the Middle East and the Asian Subcontinent) have had a profound effect on these students, their families, and their communities of origin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about a man who had a dream at a very tender age and lived the dream despite all the odds that were stacked against him. With his missionary parents, working in remote parts of Nigeria in the fifties, a period where basic amenities were not available, the dream could have been described as a "pipe dream". Despite several episodes of events that could pass as miraculous and near-death situations, the writer marched on undaunted. A ferocious civil war that claimed the lives of several of his friends did not deter him having survived it. A mouth-watering job opportunity with Caritas International at the end of the civil war for food distribution was rejected because it was considered likely to interfere with the opportunity of achieving the dream of becoming a doctor. Every human being is born into the world with his or her destiny written on the palms of our hands. Only a few are gifted, and genuinely so, with the knowledge to decipher this. The path we take towards achieving this destiny is akin to wandering through a maze. Finding your way through this maze of life is influenced by several obstacles all aimed at preventing you from finding your way through it doing so. Success will depend on several factors of which divine intervention plays a significant part. Parental guidance, as is the case with me, is also a strong factor. Right from childbirth, children show certain traits which ultimately determine what they grow up to become. It is the responsibility of parents therefore to show interest in the development of their children and to guide them all along the way towards achieving their destiny. This responsibility should on no account be left at the discretion of teachers especially during the early formative years. The intense pressure and demands of modern life should on no account be an excuse to abandon this important parental duty. My parents featured prominently in this book, and I owe my success in life to them.
