Book excerpt: In view of the rapidly expanding urban, industrial and agri cultural water requirements in many areas and the normally associated critical unreliability of surface water supplies in arid and semi-arid zones, groundwater exploration and use is of fundamental importance for logical economic development. Two interrelated facets should be evident in all such groundwater projects : (a) definition of groundwater recharge mechanisms and characteristics for identified geological formations, in order to determine whether exploitation in the long-term involves 'mining' of an es sentially 'fossil' resource or withdrawal from a dynamic supply. A solution to this aspect is essential for development of a re source management policy: (b) determination of recharge variability in time and space to thus enable determination of total aquifer input and to quantify such practical aspects as 'minimum risk' waste disposal locations and artificial recharge potential via (e.g.) devegetation or engi neering works. However, current international developments relating to natural recharge indicate the following 'problems' ; no single comprehensive estimation technique can yet be iden tified from the spectrum of methods available; all are reported to give suspect results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a general consensus that for the next few decades at least, the Earth will continue its warming. This will inevitably bring about serious environmental problems. For human society, the most severe will be those related to alterations of the hydrological cycle, which is already heavily influenced by human activities. Climate change will directly affect groundwater recharge, groundwater quality and the freshwater-seawater interface. The variations of groundwater storage inevitably entail a variety of geomorphological and engineering effects. In the areas where water resources are likely to diminish, groundwater will be one of the main solutions to prevent drought. In spite of its paramount importance, the issue of 'Climate Change and Groundwater' has been neglected. This volume presents some of the current understanding of the topic.

Book excerpt: Human beings have exerted large-scale changes on the terrestrial biosphere, primarily through agricultural practices. However, the impacts of such changes on the hydrologic cycle are poorly understood. The purpose of this study is to show the impacts of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) change on the subsurface portion of the hydrologic cycle by changing groundwater recharge. To analyze these changes in the catchment area and spatial pattern over the time, a set of satellite images was obtained for the years 1973 (MSS), 1986 (TM) and 2000 (ETM), and hydro meteorological data for over 30 years was taken and used for the trend analysis of these factors. It has been observed that the ground water recharge is progressively declining in considerable rate. The decline in the rate of recharge has been treated by analyzing the temporal trend patterns of some of the hydro meteorological elements that have a great impact on groundwater recharge conditions and LULC of the catchment, specially vegetation cover. Trends of these elements are presented in the following way: annual precipitation is slightly decreasing, however, its rate of decline is not comparable with the significant decrease in ground water recharge; the potential evapotranspiration is slightly decreasing that favors recharge; the annual surface runoff of the catchment is appreciably increasing, and the lake level rise shows a highly increasing trend. Based on this results, it is highly recommended to protect the remaining patches of vegetation and apply both physical and biological conservation measures to reclaim the degraded areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive overview of the hydrology of the Nile River, especially the ecohydrological degradation and challenges the basin is facing, the impact of climate change on water availability and the transboundary water management issues. The book includes analysis and approaches that will help provide different insights into the hydrology of this complex basin, which covers 11 countries and is home to over 300 million people. The need for water-sharing agreements that reflect the current situations of riparian countries and are based on equitable water- sharing principles is stressed in many chapters. This book explores water resource availability and quality and their trends in the basin, soil erosion and watershed degradation at different scales, water and health, land use and climate change impact, transboundary issues and water management, dams, reservoirs and lakes. The link between watershed and river water quantity and quality is discussed pointing out the importance of watershed protection for better water resource management, water accessibility, institutional set-up and policy, water demand and management. The book also presents the water sharing sticking points in relation to historical treaties and the emerging water demands of the upstream riparian countries. The need for collaboration and identification of common ground to resolve the transboundary water management issues and secure a win-win is also indicated.

Book excerpt: This open access multi-authored book presents a 'state of the science' synthesis of knowledge on the biodiversity of Angola, based on sources in peer-reviewed journals, in books and where appropriate, unpublished official reports. The book identifies Angola as one of the most biologically diverse countries in Africa, but notes that its fauna, flora, habitats and the processes that drive the dynamics of its ecosystems are still very poorly researched and documented. This 'state of the science' synthesis is for the use of all students of Angola's biodiversity, and for those responsible for the planning, development and sustainable management of the country's living resources. The volume brings together the results of expeditions and research undertaken in Angola since the late eighteenth century, with emphasis on work conducted in the four decades since Angola's independence in 1975. The individual chapters have been written by leaders in their fields, and reviewed by peers familiar with the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive description of groundwater resources in Ethiopia and its various dimensions (groundwater as resource, environmental functions, and socioeconomics). The prevailing knowledge of groundwater resources in Ethiopia (or elsewhere in Sub Saharan Africa) was based on geological and stratigraphic framework known nearly four decades ago (mainly 1960's and 70's). Thanks to the substantial geoscientific research since the 70's a new set of relevant geological/stratigrahpic data has been created that helps to re-define our understanding of groundwater resources in Africa as a whole and in Ethiopia in particular: a) For the first time the basement aquifer of Ethiopia has been described hydrogeologically based on genesis of regoliths (deep weathering and striping history); clear regional difference in groundwater potential is shown for the first time; comparative accounty has been given regarding groundwater occurrence in the generally low grade basement rocks of Ethiopia (Arabian Nubian shield) and high grade basement rocks of the rest of Africa. b) For the first time groundwater occurrence in multilayred sedimentary rocks account for spatial variation in degree of karstification; deformation history, and stratigraphy. c) The vast volcanic aquifers of Ethiopia which have previously classified based on their ages are now reclassified based on age, morphology (eg. groundwater in plateau volcanics, groundwater in shield volcanics) and aquifer structure. d) The loose alluvio lacustrine sediments which were known as least extensive in previous works based on areal cover are in fact shown to host the most voluminous groundwater resources in Ethiopia. These aquifers have now been described based on their geomorphology, extent, and genesis. The aim of this book is to use these newly created knowledge to redefine the understanding of groundwater resources in Ethiopia.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For each grid cell, the Soil-Water-Balance (SWB) code used the hydrologic soil classification, land cover classification, available soil moisture capacity, surface flow direction, and daily climatic data of precipitation, minimum temperature, and maximum temperature. The SWB code calculated an estimation of recharge, in vertical inches of water, for each individual cell for each individual day and summarized the data as daily, monthly, or yearly outputs. Each cell took the inputs of precipitation, snowmelt, and surface water inflow then subtracted the outputs of interception, evapotranspiration, and surface water outflow. Any excess water from this summation was used to satisfy the available soil moisture, and when that quantity had been met, all remaining water was considered to be groundwater recharge.
