Book excerpt: The dose distributions in a cylindrical foxhole due to ground penetration of 0.66 Mev gamma radiation from Cs137 sources near the lip of the hole have been measured for a "ground" of concrete. Ninety percent of the dose due to ground penetration came from contamination within 1 foot of the edge of the hole. Measurements were also made of the dose distributions produced by the lip penetration of a lucite "ground". It was found that the dose produced by a single source under conditions of lip geometry could be calculated with reasonable accuracy by using one half of the infinite medium buildup factor for lip penetration distances of less than 8 mean free paths.

Book excerpt: The penetration into concrete of gamma radiation from fallout has been measured in an idealized geometry as a function of time after the detonation of a nuclear device. At the same time, the exposure dose rate in air at heights of 3 and 9 ft above the ground was measured with two detectors suspended from a tower and shielded from above with lead so as to be sensitive primarily to radiation from fallout on the ground. For this test a 'sandwich' made of seven concrete slabs, forming a mass of concrete with face dimensions large enough to reduce edge effects to a negligible amount, was buried with its top surface flush with the ground. Remote-reading detectors were placed between the concrete slabs, thus permitting measurements of dose rate as a function of depth in concrete. The concrete mass and the tower were located in the center of a cleared and leveled area approximately 200 yd in diameter. Thus the gamma radiation at the detectors originated from an essentially infinite-plane source of radiation. Results are presented both as a function of time after detonation and of depth of penetration of the radiation into concrete. A comparison of the results with theoretical calculations is made. Book excerpt: Detailed comparisons of the results show that the angular distribution of the dose from a fallout field is simulated with reasonable accuracy over most angles by a plane source of Cs-137 or Co-60 and over all angle by a mixture of Ce-144, Cs-137, and Co-60. The simulation of the fallout energy spectra is quite poor, however, even in combinations of the three isotopes are employed. Comparisons of the Monte Carlo data with measured data for monoenergetic plane sources show good agreement.

Book excerpt: A third source arrangement, called the "compact simulator", was found to simulate the gamma radiation environment equally well. The compact simulator utilizes Ce-144, Cs-137, and Co-60 in a finite plane source 60 feet in radius and in an elevated toroidal source which acts as a virtual source for the remainder of the infinite plane. In the compact simulator, an overhead slab of water acts as a reflector to simulate air scattering.

Book excerpt: The dose rate contribution from the lip of a 4-ft-diameter foxhole, located in an infinite contaminated field, averages 68% of the total dose received in the foxhole for the case where the lip contribution is measured and skyshine is calculated. 2. In the case where both are calculated from theory, the dose rate average is 4% lower. 3. Clearing an annulus 2 ft wide around the edge of the foxhole removes about 99% of the lip contribution; therefore, removing about 64% to 68% of the total radiation received in the foxhole.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma-ray depth-dose distributions in a phantom exposed to fallout and to simulated fallout were calculated by the Monte Carlo method. The phantom consisted of a tissue equivalent vertical right cylinder of 60 cm height and 30 cm in diameter. The center of the phantom was 3 ft 8 in. (111.8 cm) above a smooth ground surface uniformly contaminated with 235U fission products. The energy and angle distribution of the gamma rays incident upon the phantom were taken from previous Monte Carlo calculations. The depth-dose distributions were found to be relatively insensitive to fallout age over the period investigated (1 hour to 9 days). The dose rate at the center of the phantom is approximately 65 percent of the free-field dose rate, while that at the lateral surface is approximately 80 percent. Except near the extremities, the dose rate along the vertical axis of the phantom varies at approximately the same rate with height above ground as does the free-field dose rate. Approximately one-half of the dose rate at the center of the phantom is from photons which have suffered previous collisions in the phantom. An additional calculation was performed of the depth-dose distribution within a phantom positioned at the center of a 4 ft diameter by 5 ft deep foxhole located in a 1.12-hr fallout field. The distribution in the horizontal midplane of the phantom was found to be quite similar in shape to the above ground case except for a sharper dropoff of the dose away from the lateral surface. As would be expected, however, the axial distributions is quite different from that found above ground. (Author).
