They have the ability to sequester carbon and mitigate climate change. Sustainable forest management is guided by forest mensuration and inventory which include measuring and calculating growth and changes in trees and forests. The objective of the study was to estimate timber resources and carbon stock using simple hand tools in Kasewe and Singamba forests in the southern part of Sierra Leone. All trees with diameter at breast height (DBH)¬†,╬†10¬†cm were measured in every plot for DBH, and three trees were measured for height. The correlation between mean wood volume and carbon stock was highly significant. For Kasewe plantation forest, mean wood volume and carbon stock were 151¬†m3¬†ha,àí1 and 44¬†t¬†C¬†ha,àí1, respectively, and for the Singamba natural forest, they were 181¬†m3¬†ha,àí1 and 82¬†t¬†C¬†ha,àí1, respectively. The linear correlation between basal area and volume, DBH and volume and basal area and total biomass was significant for the plantation species tested. Realistic national forest inventory and community forestry are inevitable for sustainable forest management in Sierra Leone.

Book excerpt: This report is the second in a series that examines the role of natural forests and woodlands in the storage of carbon. Understanding the role of natural ecosystems in carbon storage is an important part of solving the climate change problem. This report presents a landscape-wide green carbon account of the `Great Western Woodlands¿ (GWW), sixteen million hectares of mostly contiguous natural woody vegetation to the east of the wheatbelt in south-western Western Australia. For the first time, we provide an overview of the vegetation structure, climate, geology and historical land use of the GWW, and examine how these interact to affect the carbon dynamics of this region¿s landscape ecosystems. An analysis of time-series of satellite imagery is used to develop a fire history of the GWW since the 1970s. These layers of environmental information, along with field survey data and remotely sensed greenness, are used to construct a spatial model to estimate biomass carbon stocks of the woodlands at the present day, and to infer an upper limit to the carbon sequestration potential of the GWW. A range of management options to enable protection of high quality carbon stocks and restoration of degraded stocks are evaluated.

Since the annual changes in forest carbon stock under this kind of management are relatively small and often under the canopy, they cannot easily be assessed using remote sensing, so ground-level data collection is likely to be essential over large areas of forests. The potential role of communities in measuring, monitoring and reporting carbon stock changes in their forests has been explicitly mentioned in UNFCCC documentation on methodology for REDD+, the extended form of REDD that includes forest enhancement, sustainable forest management and forest conservation. This book presents practical methods by which communities can do it. These methods were developed and tested with communities in villages in Africa and Asia under a six-year research programme. The reliability of the data gathered by the community is shown to be equivalent to that of professional forest inventories while the costs are much lower. Involvement of local communities in collection of this data may be the most cost-effective solution for national REDD+ programmes. Moreover, it could provide the basis for a transparent system for distribution of the financial rewards from REDD+ and the carbon market. The book first presents the policy context, concepts, methods and general results, which include estimates of typical carbon savings resulting from community management in different types of tropical forests. It also looks at the governance issues that may be involved and a variety of ways in which incentive schemes might be designed to encourage communities to participate. The second half of the book is devoted to case studies from the countries involved in the research. These provide both ideas and practical experience to enable agencies to engage with local communities to monitor carbon stock changes.

The data was collected from the field by measuring plants with a DBH of >5cm in quadrat plots of 10 X 20 m and the carbon stocks of each plant were analyzed by using allometric equations. From this study the mean total carbon stock density of Arba Minch Ground Water Forest was found to be 583.27 t ha-1, of which 829.12 t ha-1, 165.88 t ha-1, 1.28 t ha-1, 83.80 t ha-1 was contained in the above ground carbon, belowground carbon, litter carbon and soil organic carbon (0-30 cm depth) respectively. This study will serve as a potential entry point for the engagement of the forest in REDD project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terrestrial biosphere is responsible for removing roughly one quarter of the total anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This process is dominated by the forests. The terrestrial portion of the global carbon cycle is also the most uncertain. Growing forests are a major sink of CO2 while deforestation contributes as a major source of CO2. While the locations of deforestation can be tracked with remote sensing data relatively well, the amount of carbon removed is not well known due to the lack of knowledge on the biomass density of the forests that were disturbed. Spatially explicit distribution of carbon stocks in global forests can greatly reduce this uncertainty by improving estimates of emissions from land use activities. It will also help with green house gas inventory at regional and national scales. Increasing amounts of remote sensing based forest studies are being conducted, however, there is currently no global spatially explicit map of forest biomass/carbon. This dissertation aims to address that by producing the first global spatially explicit map of live biomass and carbon stock in forests and other living woody vegetation at ~1 km resolution for circa year 2005. A combination of remote sensing data from the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) are used to provide wall-to-wall spatial information. Ground inventory and LiDAR from the Geosciences Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) onboard the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) are used to create a global network of aboveground biomass (AGB) samples. Landcover map based on the GlobCover product from the European Space Agency (ESA) is used as ancillary data. These are combined in a statistical model using Maximum Entropy to create the first global map of AGB and total carbon stock (above + below ground) in living biomass. Uncertainty at the pixel level is also produced alongside the above products. The total global carbon in live woody vegetation is estimated at 337 PgC, with 311.4 PgC being in the forests (92% of total) for circa year 2005, compared with 302.8 PgC in total global live forest biomass as reported in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's 2010 Forest Resources Assessment report (FRA 2010). Shrublands and savannas account for the other 25.6 PgC (8% of total) globally. National carbon stocks are calculated and reported for all the countries using several different thresholds for forest cover.

This storage depends on forest ecosystem management, disturbances and climate variation among others. The impact of forest management activities on the ability of forests to sequester and store atmospheric carbon is of increasing scientific concern. A quantitative understanding of how forest management enhances carbon storage is lacking for most forest types because few studies have been conducted. Therefore, this study estimated and compared the above ground biomass (AGB)/carbon stock of two forest types under different forest management regimes. Very high resolution Geoeye satellite images and airborne LiDAR data were used for this study. Total AGB was estimated by allometric equation using DBH and tree height measured in the field. The average carbon stock was found to be 244 t C/ha and 140 t C/ha for community and government forest respectively. Based on the findings, the conclusion is that forest management significantly affects the carbon stock of a forest.
