Book excerpt: In 1962 when I was leaving Greece at thirteen to come to America my mother told me that I should write my father's story one day because all the fairy tales he told us when we were little were the true stories of his own life. But as you will find out in this book there was never any time to take up writing! Nine years ago I had a cardio version which left me with an almost certain frightening heart arrhythmia. I was told then, to slow down. I downsized as much as I could have. Four and one half years ago, a chiropractor disconnected by ATLAS that aged me twenty years, nearly killed me and slowed me down to a standstill almost. Because of the numerous medical appointments I had to close my gate to my farm so many times, I have lost most of my business. I started keeping a ledger of the extreme fluctuations of my blood pressure and such. I was too scared to lie down in my bed at night because I would vertigo. Any minute it would be my last I thought. I was hospitalised many times. My bag was sitting by my back door ready for the hospital. I was not scared of dying for myself. I did not want my beloved animals to have to suffer until someone found them after my demise. To distract me from my constant fear of dying between the heart arrhythmia and the disconnected ATLAS I stayed up late and I typed just half an hour at a time because my neck would hurt. When I was exhausted I would collapse in my bed with my eyes closed in order not to experience the frightening vertigo. I started typing my father's story. I concentrated on remembering 67 years worth of memories. I am now seventy one years old. I found out I like writing. With your help I will keep on writing.

Book excerpt: Alexandra Robbins wanted to find out if the stereotypes about sorority girls were actually true, so she spent a year with a group of girls in a typical sorority. The sordid behavior of sorority girls exceeded her worst expectations -- drugs, psychological abuse, extreme promiscuity, racism, violence, and rampant eating disorders are just a few of the problems. But even more surprising was the fact that these abuses were inflicted and endured by intelligent, successful, and attractive women. Why is the desire to belong to a sorority so powerful that women are willing to engage in this type of behavior -- especially when the women involved are supposed to be considered 'sisters'? What definition of sisterhood do many women embrace? Pledged combines a sharp-eyed narrative with extensive reporting and the fly-on-the-wall voyeurism of reality shows to provide the answer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secrets from the Greek Kitchen explores how cooking skills, practices, and knowledge on the island of Kalymnos are reinforced or transformed by contemporary events. Based on more than twenty years of research and the author’s videos of everyday cooking techniques, this rich ethnography treats the kitchen as an environment in which people pursue tasks, display expertise, and confront culturally defined risks. Kalymnian islanders, both women and men, use food as a way of evoking personal and collective memory, creating an elaborate discourse on ingredients, tastes, and recipes. Author David E. Sutton focuses on micropractices in the kitchen, such as the cutting of onions, the use of a can opener, and the rolling of phyllo dough, along with cultural changes, such as the rise of televised cooking shows, to reveal new perspectives on the anthropology of everyday living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sumptuously illustrated book, Joan Breton Connelly gives us the first comprehensive cultural history of priestesses in the ancient Greek world. Connelly presents the fullest and most vivid picture yet of how priestesses lived and worked, from the most famous and sacred of them--the Delphic Oracle and the priestess of Athena Polias--to basket bearers and handmaidens. Along the way, she challenges long-held beliefs to show that priestesses played far more significant public roles in ancient Greece than previously acknowledged. Connelly builds this history through a pioneering examination of archaeological evidence in the broader context of literary sources, inscriptions, sculpture, and vase painting. Ranging from southern Italy to Asia Minor, and from the late Bronze Age to the fifth century A.D., she brings the priestesses to life--their social origins, how they progressed through many sacred roles on the path to priesthood, and even how they dressed. She sheds light on the rituals they performed, the political power they wielded, their systems of patronage and compensation, and how they were honored, including in death. Connelly shows that understanding the complexity of priestesses' lives requires us to look past the simple lines we draw today between public and private, sacred and secular. The remarkable picture that emerges reveals that women in religious office were not as secluded and marginalized as we have thought--that religious office was one arena in ancient Greece where women enjoyed privileges and authority comparable to that of men. Connelly concludes by examining women's roles in early Christianity, taking on the larger issue of the exclusion of women from the Christian priesthood. This paperback edition includes additional maps and a glossary for student use.

Ellen and her two best friends share a mid-life crisis by hatching a plan to renovate an 1860's Greek revival in the nearby historic district of San Antonio. Although Ellen isn’t one to believe in ghosts, she comes face to face with something inexplicable in the attic. Her ghost-enthusiast friends convince her that they must help the spirit find closure, and as they dig deeper into the past, they uncover a shocking history that someone in the neighborhood doesn’t want exposed. But Ellen and her friends don't give up easily. They realize they've been called to give voice to the invisible women who suffered behind the walls of the house for decades. If you can't get enough of Karen White, Heather Graham, Bobbie Holmes, or Jana Deleon, then this "perfect mix of fun and scary" paranormal mystery is for you! "Slightly wacky ladies, humor & good intentions result in a very interesting story. I’ve already ordered the second one in the series."--Lynne J. Condon ★★★★★ "They begin a dangerous quest digging into the real history behind the Gold House. What they find will blow your mind! My heart was racing throughout this entire book. If you believe in ghosts or even if you don't, I suggest reading by a lamp. I jumped several times as if a movie were playing inside my mind. . . . The three women in this book are wonderful. This is definitely a must-read. 5 stars for Eva! Well done!!"--Book Lover Reviews ★★★★★ "I chose this book to read because I had an awful cold and figured that if I wasn't impressed, I'd just skip finishing it! Boy was I wrong! It was really good! Even when my eyes said they were tired and should be resting, my mind said you gotta keep going. It was a real treat!"--Lynn Reener ★★★★★ "This captivating tale of three friends setting out to renovate and flip a house is definitely not your average haunted house story. The three lead characters and all the other people in this story (whether major players or merely peripheral persons) are so carefully crafted with their own unique personalities and attributes that they spring to life in the reader’s mind. The story, itself, is mesmerizing with all the back-story details of the characters’ lives and especially with the convoluted and macabre history of The Gold House (the house purchased by our leading ladies). This is one of those stories that is achingly hard to put down when bedtime rolls around or something requires your immediate attention. It really is that good."--txdoc, Goodreads Reviewer ★★★★★ "This is my first experience with author Eva Pohler and I can't believe I haven't read anything of hers before! Loved the book and I'll be checking out more in this series."--The Novel Lady ★★★★★ "Loved reading this book. So sad that there were people mistreated in our former days. These types of retreats or rest care facilities actually used to operate in the US for many years. Some state owned too. IN The 70 ALL were shut down. THE GHOST that haunted the house and her ancestors first tells a telling tale about what happened inside the walls of the house three women buy and restore to its former glory."--Cozy Mystery Reader ★★★★★ "This is a real page turner. Riviting, and exciting. The characters are very well written, its easy to read and you won't want to put it down."--Southermermaid85, Goodreads Reviewer ★★★★★ "Secrets of the Greek Revival sent a rollercoaster of emotions throughout this story. I couldn’t put this one down. If you are looking for a great read then this is your book. I seriously didn’t know what was coming next. As I don’t like to give away spoilers, and believe me you would not want me to, I will however tell you that I enjoyed this book so much I kept, switching from reading to audio so I could enjoy while driving to and from work."--Denise M. ★★★★★ Grab your copy to begin this ghostly adventure today! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in contemporary Greek society have been conventionally depicted as oppressed and socially inferior, circumscribed in behavior and segregated from the world of men. In 1967 Ernestine Friedl's classic article, "The Position of Women: Appearnce and Reality," argued that this view was overly simplified and that in Greek villages women in fact exercise power in household decisions and in determining the economic and marital future of their children. Since that article, feminists and anthropologists have continued to discuss the appearances of prestige vs. the realities of power. In this volume scholars form a variety of backgrounds return the debate to the setting of Greece for the first time since Friedl's work. Introduced by Jill Dubisch, the book contains eight original essays and a republication of the Friedl article. Among other topics, the essays examine changes now occurring in Greek gender roles, the ways women deal with oppression and act as mediators between the domestic sphere and life outside the home, and the extension of the language and symbolism of gender beyond male and female roles. The contributors are Juliet du Boulay, Anna Caraveli, Muriel Dimen, Jill Dubisch, Michael Herzfeld, Robinette Kennedy, Elftherios Pavlides and Jana Hesser, and S.D. Salamone and J.B. Stanton. Jill Dubisch is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. Originally published in 1986. Its members were drawn from both the regular German police, including detectives, and various Nazi security organizations. The goals of the GFP were numerous and included protecting important political and military leaders; investigating black market activities as well as acts of sabotage and espionage; locating deserters; examining anti-German activists and hunting down partisans. While performing these duties, GFP members immersed themselves in criminal activities. This book focuses on the function of the GFP in Greece compared to that of the GFP elsewhere in Europe.
