Gunther has compiled a collection of classic sermons that spans three centuries. The effects of these dynamic sermons, preached by men like D. L. Moody, George Whitefield, and Charles Haddon Spurgeon, touched not only individual lives, but also entire cities and nations for the Lord. An introduction to each sermon gives insight into each preacher and the events that provided the backdrop to his message. D. L. Moody looks back on the great Chicago fire and a sermon that broke his heart. Jonathan Edwards brought the town of Enfield, Connecticut to its knees with his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Part of this collection includes: “The Fire Sermon” by D. L. Moody “God’s Love to Fallen Man” by John Wesley “Fury Not in God” by Thomas Chalmers “Accidents, Not Punishments” by Charles Haddon Spurgeon “A Living Stone” by Handley C. G. Moule Their message, as true today as it was then, still convicts, encourages, and inspires a new generation of people who hunger after the living God.

This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the African-American Culture, What Makes Preachers and/or Pastors Great? By: J. William Poole What makes preachers and/or pastors in the African American culture great is that they lead by example. Utilizing the talents of others through challenging, inspiring, not enabling, modeling and encouraging. To illustrate these leadership techniques, J. William Poole’s In the African-American Culture, What Makes Preachers and/or Pastors Great? examines the characteristics of “great pastors and/or preachers.” Thus, John provides a section were the lives and work of four renowned Afro-American preachers and/or pastors are presented. The lives of the four exemplify personal integrity and flexibility, great team builders with a sense of direction with great faith, commitment and great joy in ministry. Through the Holy Spirit, they found and followed God’s Plan for their lives. The four are Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, Dr. L. Venchael Booth, Dr. Edward Victor Hill and Dr. Gardner C. Taylor. Thus, preaching the faith, for many the faithful is exemplified.

Stewart, which was first published in 1946, has inspired generations of preachers to strive for greater effectiveness in their proclamations. The pages contained within this book were originally addressed as lectures in the Universities of Edinburgh and St. Andrews to Divinity students and ministers, and it is the author’s hope that they will “have something to say to the wider circle of those who Sunday by Sunday are hearers of the Word of God, ‘loving the habitation of His house and the place where His honour dwelleth,’ and perhaps even to the critic in the back pew.” A practical and inspiring read.
Book Synopsis A Little Book for New Preachers by : Matthew D. Kim
Download or read book A Little Book for New Preachers written by Matthew D. Kim and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the central tasks of pastoral ministry is preaching the Word of God. Yet those who are called to ministry may feel unprepared, unable, or unwilling to step into this role. Moreover, the discipline of homiletics sometimes gets lost amid the exegetical questions, theological debates, and denominational disputes that overwhelm our attention. In this brief introduction to preaching, Matthew Kim helps to prepare those called to preach the Word. A seasoned preacher himself, Kim provides proven insight and guidance about the importance and history of preaching, the characteristics of faithful preaching, and the personal habits of a faithful preacher. With his help, both those training for ministry and those new to the pastoral task will be encouraged as they undertake their calling.
Book Synopsis Preaching and Preachers by : D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Download or read book Preaching and Preachers written by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some may object to my dogmatic assertions; but I do not apologize for them. Every preacher should believe strongly in his own method; and if I cannot persuade all of the rightness of mine, I can at least stimulate them to think and to consider other possibilities. I can say quite honestly that I would not cross the road to listen to myself preaching, and the preachers whom I have enjoyed most have been very different indeed in their method and style. But my business is not to describe them but to state what I believe to be right, however imperfectly I have put my own precepts into practice. I can only hope that the result will be of some help, and especially to young preachers called to this greatest of all tasks, and especially in these sad and evil times. With many others I pray that 'The Lord of the harvest may thrust forth' many mighty preachers to proclaim 'the unsearchable riches of Christ!'"

Book Synopsis Revival Preachers and Politics in Thirteenth Century Italy by : Augustine Thompson
Download or read book Revival Preachers and Politics in Thirteenth Century Italy written by Augustine Thompson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of medieval preaching have tended to focus on sermon texts. This is the first scholarly study in English of preaching and its social context in thirteenth-century Italy. Augustine Thompson O.P., both an academic and a preacher, reconstructs the "Great Devotion" of 1233 and analyzes its devotional, social, political, and legal elements. He shows how the preachers of this revival crafted an image of divine authority that supported their intervention in factional disputes and facilitated their arbitration in social and political conflicts. They exploited forms from revived Roman Law and developing city statutes in order to create flexible procedures for mediation, and ultimately were able to revise communal ordinances to enshrine their message of social harmony. This is a work of original scholarship, carefully researched and lucidly written, which is a valuable contribution to our understanding of religion and politics in the middle ages.
