This is a story about the difficulties of dealing pleasantly with an aging parent who has health problems, cant hear, often lacks cognitive reasoning and never has liked me very much. Nevertheless, who is better equipped to give a mother a loving home and understanding? I get upset at times but rarely show it because shes my Mom. No matter what the consequences to me, I, the martyr, continue the day with a smile, looking for the rainbow. Its out there somewhere if I just keep searching. At times this story will sound disrespectful but it is my way of coping. I tried to get this story written while she was still alive, knowing I would feel terribly guilty writing about some of the episodes after her death. Throughout all the trials and tribulations there were times when we could still laugh together and reminisce. To know that I have given her comfort in her final years is good, but as she used to say, Hell, Ill out live all my family! But that prediction did not come true. If it had, I would hope that someone would throw this book in the lake before she had a chance to read it, otherwise she would have peed on my grave.

Here comes Red, and you better be ready for him. From the hills of the Kiamishi Mountains, in southeast Oklahoma, a boy picked himself up by the bootstraps, brushed off the Oklahoma dust and showed the world he was someone to reckon with. The only thing he knew was hard work. Deprived in more ways than one, he learned early in life to keep his mouth shut. But when he was on his own, he quickly made up for it, and never stopped after that. He became a mouth piece for all the cops in the state of Nevada, as well as nationwide. His grammar was less than perfect yet no one misunderstood what he was bluntly saying. He got his point across immediately and didnt mince words. This is a remarkable story of a boy from the cotton fields to the oil fields, from trucker to pilot, from cop to labor leader, from lobbyist to senator. At one point he was either president or chairman of eleven different organizations at the same time. But his accomplishments didnt change him. As he always said, Im just a poor olcountry boy come to town trying to make good. And he certainly did. This story shows that honesty, hard work, tenacity, and humor are still the best assets a person can possess. It opened doors which would normally have been slammed in his face, had he not had the foresight to stick his boot in the door ahead of time.

Book excerpt: Primary Colors for the social media era, the wildly profane, viral phenomenon that resulted from a fake Twitter account deftly satirizing Rahm Emanuel is the first significant Twitter epic in today’s digital age. Primary Colors for the social media era, the wildly profane, viral phenomenon that resulted from a fake Twitter account deftly satirizing Rahm Emanuel is the first significant Twitter epic in today’s digital age. With web sensations such as Stuff White People Like and Sh*t My Dad Says making the leap from the Internet to the bestseller lists, it’s no surprise that this unique and hilarious first-person account of Rahm Emanuel’s fake mayoral campaign via Twitter has already been featured in The Atlantic, Wired, The Colbert Report, and is still an unfolding story. Now, fans can read the entire six months of collected tweets of @MayorEmanuel with commentary and annotations from creator Dan Sinker. When rumors circulated that Rahm Emanuel would enter the Chicago mayor’s race, suddenly the “real” Rahm became overshadowed by a decidedly different Rahm, @MayorEmanuel. Via Twitter, this fake Rahm spun a faux-insider’s story unlike any other—in real time. Garnering a passionate following on Twitter and hailed by the press, @MayorEmanuel’s journey is an entertaining, modern-day anti-hero's quest as he travels a surrealistic Chicago landscape, picking up friends along the way, including advisor David Axelrod, Carl the Intern (a high-school-aged MacGyver), a puppy named Hambone, and a duck named Quaxelrod, to name a few. Both a surprisingly literary romp as well as an inside peek into an historic mayoral race, The F***ing Epic Twitter Quest of @MayorEmanuel is a bold and exciting foray into a new form of participatory, real-time storytelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the astonishing first prose novel from the legendary author of Watchmen and From Hell — an epic yet intimate portrait of a single English town across the whole span of human history. The precursor to Jerusalem. In a story full of lust, madness, and ecstasy, we meet twelve distinctive characters that lived in the same region of central England over the span of six thousand years. Their narratives are woven together in patterns of recurring events, strange traditions, and uncanny visions. First, a cave-boy loses his mother, falls in love, and learns a deadly lesson. He is followed by an extraordinary cast of characters: a murderess who impersonates her victim, a fisherman who believes he has become a different species, a Roman emissary who realizes the bitter truth about the Empire, a crippled nun who is healed miraculously by a disturbing apparition, an old crusader whose faith is destroyed by witnessing the ultimate relic, two witches, lovers, who burn at the stake. Each interconnected tale traces a path in a journey of discovery of the secrets of the land. Throughout, the image of the fire resonates between the tales, while Moore finds a different voice for each character – though most are inherently duplicitous in some manner, leading to a further commentary on the disparity between myth and reality, and which is more likely to endure over time. Co-Published by Top Shelf Productions (USA) and Knockabout (UK). With a new cover design by John Coulthart.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A fascinating look at how consumers perceive logos, ads, commercials, brands, and products.”—Time How much do we know about why we buy? What truly influences our decisions in today’s message-cluttered world? In Buyology, Martin Lindstrom presents the astonishing findings from his groundbreaking three-year, seven-million-dollar neuromarketing study—a cutting-edge experiment that peered inside the brains of 2,000 volunteers from all around the world as they encountered various ads, logos, commercials, brands, and products. His startling results shatter much of what we have long believed about what captures our interest—and drives us to buy. Among the questions he explores: • Does sex actually sell? • Does subliminal advertising still surround us? • Can “cool” brands trigger our mating instincts? • Can our other senses—smell, touch, and sound—be aroused when we see a product? Buyology is a fascinating and shocking journey into the mind of today's consumer that will captivate anyone who's been seduced—or turned off—by marketers' relentless attempts to win our loyalty, our money, and our minds.

Book excerpt: Follow the historic 1953 statewide police investigation of polygamy called Operation Seagull as it leads to young Karen Hardy's Utah farm family. Karen is frightened of police following her family and is publicly humiliated when her first period begins during the sacred ceremony for baptizing the dead in the Salt Lake City temple. She finally tells her friend, "I wish I could be just a normal kid living in a normal place out in the world somewhere." Public shame and constant fear cloud her dreams of a life where she won't be punished for the sin of yearning for store-bought clothes, the sin of asking questions, the sin of resisting lies about polygamy, but most alarming, the sin of dodging the leering white haired prophet her family worships as the One Mighty and Strong and who is stalking her as his plural bride to be.
