Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete English Grammar: For Common and High Schools This text-book of grammar has been thoroughly revised and entirely reset in new type. It forms a complete book, containing in one volume the work usually found in books on language lessons and English grammar. The book is divided into four parts, each of which is a course by itself. The first three parts treat of the same subjects, but each gives a more comprehensive treatment than the preceding. The work of the ordi nary school is completed in Part Three. Part Four deals only with the most difficult topics and those about which authors do not agree. The author has no sympathy with the notion that technical terms in grammar should not be used until the pupil has reached the upper grades. He can see no reason why children cannot learn and understand the terms nazm and wm, for instance, as easily as name' wom' and action-word. Therefore, technical work will be found in Part One, gradually becoming more dith cult as the pupil advances, until in Part Four will be found about all the technical work required for any examination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English Grammar Although we learn to speak by imitating the language of our elders and not through the study of grammar, nevertheless, through the study of grammar we do learn to distinguish between cor rect and incorrect forms of speech. The study of grammar, therefore, enables us to detect any ih correct habits of speech we may have formed through imitating the incorrect language of others. This knowledge, it we are sufficiently watchful, should lead us to correct these errors and thus become rrrore proficient in our speech. Book excerpt: These fifty humorous misrules of grammar will open the eyes of writers of all levels to fine style. How Not to Write is a wickedly witty book about grammar, usage, and style. William Safire, the author of the New York Times Magazine column "On Language," homes in on the "essential misrules of grammar," those mistakes that call attention to the major rules and regulations of writing. He tells you the correct way to write and then tells you when it is all right to break the rules. In this lighthearted guide, he chooses the most common and perplexing concerns of writers new and old. Each mini-chapter starts by stating a misrule like "Don't use Capital letters without good REASON." Safire then follows up with solid and entertaining advice on language, grammar, and life. He covers a vast territory from capitalization, split infinitives (it turns out you can split one if done meaningfully), run-on sentences, and semi-colons to contractions, the double negative, dangling participles, and even onomatopoeia. Originally published under the title Fumblerules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in English Grammar: A Comprehensive Course for Grammar Schools, High Schools and Academies IN the preparation of this book, the essential features of Welsh's Lessons in English Grammar have been retained. Many chapters have been rewritten, others enlarged, and the entire work has been recast and rearranged. Two points have been kept prominently in view: (1) What the boy or girl of average ability knows of the use of our language before beginning the systematic study of its facts, and the laws and usages of its structure; (2) What amount of information such an one ought to possess of our language after having studied it intelligently for the length of time usually devoted to it in the graded and ungraded schools of the country. It is, therefore, assumed that they actually know some -thing concerning the language they speak and write, and that they are capable of learning a great deal more if they have an opportunity. The sentence is the unit of thought; its elements are words, phrases, and clauses. These taken separately are pieces of sentences. When properly put together, they are the vehicles of thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School English Grammar: Based on Whitney's Essentials of English Grammar Since the first edition of this grammar was published in 1886, the Ontario High School course of study has been altered, and philological research has modified the views of English scholars on a number of subjects. The present work is intended to meet the existing conditions. It contains also the results of the criticisms and suggestions which the author has received from teachers who have used the old book. Like the first edition, this one has been constructed in accordance with the view that, while English grammar is a science with important practical applications, it is, when properly studied, an intellectual discipline of the highest order. Like the first edition, also, this one is on an historical basis. Only on this basis can the structure of the language be intelligently explained. "Old English," as Prof. Skeat truly says, "is the right key to the understanding of Modern English, and those who will not use the key, will never open the book with all their fumbling." But, although many of the earlier forms and constructions are given, it is not intended that they should be memorized. Those which exhibit the main facts in the development of the language deserve especial consideration; the others have been introduced merely to illustrate statements which might otherwise be imperfectly understood. In accordance with the best pedagogical opinion, definitions have been omitted in this edition also. The so-called definitions in Section II. are summaries of the discussions rather than definitions of the once favored but mind-benumbing type. It would be impracticable to note in a preface all the changes which have been found necessary to bring the book into line with modern scholarship and the present requirements of secondary education. One or two may, however, be pointed out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of High School English The teacher of English in the high schools of to-day has varied and manifold duties. To the lessons in literature and written composition, which were the staple diet a decade ago, there must now be added persistent instruction in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral composition, all duly planned and graded for the secondary school. Furthermore, every well-ordered course in English must include some provision for dramatic effort in the classroom if the work in oral expression is to be given its full value. The present volume contains material for study and practice in all these divisions of the subject, arranged with a view to affording the pupil as much growth-giving exercise as possible, and to economizing the time and energy of the teacher. The subject matter for composition, both oral and written, has been carefully chosen with the design of securing interest, for much experience has convinced the writer that the value of such work is in exact proportion to the zest with which it is carried on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Language and Grammar If, as Bacon says, "A wise questioning is the half-way towards knowledge," a wise questioner is the best guide to that destination. Any text-book will fail of its highest service unless the wise questioning of the teacher, his tactful adaptation of its material to the condition of his pupils, and his sympathetic fidelity to the methods and spirit of the book, give it life and make it a moving influence. I have sought to write a lesson book, illustrating, explaining, and defining the grammatical facts about words, and the fundamental principles upon which the construction of an English sentence is based; to add thereto such analyses of a few selections from good American authors, as shall give to pupils some insight into the fulness of beauty and meaning contained in what we term good literature, and shall suggest to teachers methods that may be used in the study of other selections; and to outline some plans for training the pupils to write English easily, correctly, and gracefully. The following simple exercises will form a useful and strengthening accompaniment to all language work: 1. In order to express thoughts the pupil must have that wherewith he may express them - a vocabulary of words in good usage.
