Book Synopsis Das Bild Griechenlands Im Spiegel Der Voelker (17. Bis 18. Jahrhundert)- the Image of Greece in the Mirror of Nations (17 Th -18 Th Centuries) by : Evangelos Konstantinou
Download or read book Das Bild Griechenlands Im Spiegel Der Voelker (17. Bis 18. Jahrhundert)- the Image of Greece in the Mirror of Nations (17 Th -18 Th Centuries) written by Evangelos Konstantinou and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The research objective and discussion topic of the essays in the present volume is the image of Greece in the cultural, artistic and literary traditions in different countries in Europe and abroad, and the ways it was formed and modified. The essays raise also the issue to what extent this image corresponds to Greek realities. The main part of philhellenic images was formed during the early 19th century and during the 1820s and 1830s Philhellenism grew up to a European movement of considerable import. However, it is not only desirable, but also scientifically necessary to broaden the scope of the analysis of the reception of Greece in Europe and abroad in order to include both previous and subsequent forms of philhellenic images. Therefore the aim of the present volume is to concentrate on early forms of Philhellenism, but also on contemporary receptions of Greece in Europe and other continents. Besides an accurate account of how Greece has been perceived in the last four centuries, the essays also point out stereotypes and misconceptions that often characterize the image of Greece abroad. The volume gathers 30 works of researchers and experts from 14 countries and gives a new impetus to the research of Philhellenism.

This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis Greece’s labyrinth of language by : Raf Van Rooy
Download or read book Greece’s labyrinth of language written by Raf Van Rooy and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascinated with the heritage of ancient Greece, early modern intellectuals cultivated a deep interest in its language, the primary gateway to this long-lost culture, rehabilitated during the Renaissance. Inspired by the humanist battle cry “To the sources!” scholars took a detailed look at the Greek source texts in the original language and its different dialects. In so doing, they saw themselves confronted with major linguistic questions: Is there any order in this immense diversity? Can the Ancient Greek dialects be classified into larger groups? Is there a hierarchy among the dialects? Which dialect is the oldest? Where should problematic varieties such as Homeric and Biblical Greek be placed? How are the differences between the Greek dialects to be described, charted, and explained? What is the connection between the diversity of the Greek tongue and the Greek homeland? And, last but not least, are Greek dialects similar to the dialects of the vernacular tongues? Why (not)? This book discusses and analyzes the often surprising and sometimes contradictory early modern answers to these questions.

Book Synopsis Divine Names on the Spot by : Fabio Porzia
Download or read book Divine Names on the Spot written by Fabio Porzia and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ancient Greek and Semitic languages resorted to a large range of words to name the divine. Gods and goddesses were called by a variety of names and combinations of onomastic attributes. This broad lexicon of names is characterised by plurality and a tendency to build on different sequences of names; therefore, the Mapping Ancient Polytheisms project focuses on the process of naming the divine in order to better understand the ancient divine in terms of a plurality in the making. A fundamental rule for reading ancient divine names is to grasp them in their context - time and place, a ritual, the form of the discourse, a cultural milieu...: a deity is usually named according to a specific situation. From Artemis Eulochia to al-Lat, al-'Uzza and Manat, from Melqart to "my rock" in the biblical book of Psalms, this volume journeys between the sanctuary on Mount Gerizim and late antique magical practices, revisiting rituals, hymnic poetry, oaths of orators and philosophical prayers. While targeting different names in different contexts, the contributors draft theoretical propositions towards a dynamic approach of naming the divine in antiquity.'
