Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stocks of Grains in All Positions: July 25, 1960 July 1 stocks of corn and sorghum grain moved well above previous record levels and wheat edged slightly above the previous record. Stocks of corn at 2, 563 million bushels jumped 16 percent above the record level of the previous year. Sorghum grain stocks of 636 million bushels were a fifth above the record level of last year. Increased stocks of corn and sorghum grain much more than offset smaller holding of oats and barley giving a record total feed grain tonnage of 97. 9 million tons, more than a tenth above a year ago. Wheat stocks moved moderately above the record level of last July 1 with the l, 313 million bushels nearly double average stocks. Rye stocks were reduced to 10 million bushels but were above average. Soybeans were the second largest of record with 137 million bushels held in all storage positions but flaxseed stocks of 3. 1 million bushels were the lowest of record. Wheat stocks of l, 313 million bushels stored in all positions on July 1 were slightly larger than last year and a record for the date. Total stocks were nearly a sixth larger than the 1959 production with more than 95 percent of the stocks owned by CCC and under CCC loan. Off-farm stocks of 1, million bushels were the largest of record and 3 percent above the previous year. Rye stocks of million bushels stored in all positions were 18 percent less E's}. The relatively large carry-over a year earlier but 7 percent above average. Stocks in each storage position, except for terminals, were less than July 1 a year ago. Off-farm stocks of 8. 6 million bushels were 4 percent above last year and nearly a fifth above average. Stocks at interior mills and elevators of 3. 8 million bushels were about a third less than a year ago but more than one-half larger than average. Corn stocks in all storage positions July 1 were 2, 563 million bushels, 16 percent above the previous record for the date set last year. Stocks in inter ior mills, elevators and warehouses at 584 million bushels were nearly a third larger than a year ago. Stocks in all off-farm positions were 1, 228 million bushels and were mostly CCC owned and under warehouse loan. Stocks on farms at 1, 335 million bushels were 19 percent larger than on July 1, 1959 with more than 40 percent under CCC loans, including reseal and purchase agreements outstanding. Total disappearance during the april-june quarter was 844 million bushels, 7 percent above the same quarter last year.
