Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stocks of Grains in All Positions: April 24, 1962 Oats stored in all positions totaled 494 million bushels, 11 percent less than last April and the 10-year average. April 1 farm stocks, at 432 million bushels, were 11 percent smaller than a year ago and the 63 million bushels in off-farm storage were down 16 percent. Less than a tenth of the total stocks were owned by or under loan to CCC. Disappearance during the first three months of 1962 was 281 million bushels, 4 percent less than the 294 million bushel disappearance for the same period in 1961 and the smallest for this quarter since records were started in 1944. Barley stocks in all storage positions on April 1, at 215 million bushels, were 13 percent less than a year earlier but 11 percent above average. Farm stocks were estimated at 98 million bushels, nearly a fourth smaller than those of last April but off-farm holdings were only slightly less than a year earlier. Barley owned by or under loan to CCC accounted for about a third of the total stocks this year compared with 44 percent a year ago. Disappearance from all storage positions during the january-march quarter was a record 119 million bushels. This compares with the 111 million bushel disappearance for the same period last year and the previous record for this quarter of 116 million bushels in 1960. Sorghum grain stocks in all positions on April 1 totaled 853 million bushels, slightly less than the record for this date of 860 million bushels last year. Off-farm stocks at 768 million bushels were up 2 percent from April 1, 1961. However, farm holdings declined to 85 million bushels, 22' percent less than the quantity stored on farms last April 1. Nearly nine-tenths of the April 1 stocks were owned by or under loan to CCC. Disappearance during the first quarter of 1962 totaled 188 million bushels, compared with 173 million bushels for this quarter last year. Soybean stocks in all storage positions on April 1 totaled 359 million bushels, the highest of record and more than a third larger than April 1, 1961. Practically all of the increase occurred in farm holdings as off-farm stocks were about the same as a year earlier.
