Book excerpt: This book develops a class of graded finite element methods to solve singular elliptic boundary value problems in two- and three-dimensional domains. It provides an approachable and self-contained presentation of the topic, including both the mathematical theory and numerical tools necessary to address the major challenges imposed by the singular solution. Moreover, by focusing upon second-order equations with constant coefficients, it manages to derive explicit results that are accessible to the broader computation community. Although written with mathematics graduate students and researchers in mind, this book is also relevant to applied and computational mathematicians, scientists, and engineers in numerical methods who may encounter singular problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Finite Element Method for Elliptic Problems is the only book available that analyzes in depth the mathematical foundations of the finite element method. It is a valuable reference and introduction to current research on the numerical analysis of the finite element method, as well as a working textbook for graduate courses in numerical analysis. It includes many useful figures, and there are many exercises of varying difficulty. Although nearly 25 years have passed since this book was first published, the majority of its content remains up-to-date. Chapters 1 through 6, which cover the basic error estimates for elliptic problems, are still the best available sources for material on this topic. The material covered in Chapters 7 and 8, however, has undergone considerable progress in terms of new applications of the finite element method; therefore, the author provides, in the Preface to the Classics Edition, a bibliography of recent texts that complement the classic material in these chapters. Audience: this book is particularly useful to graduate students, researchers, and engineers using finite element methods. The reader should have knowledge of analysis and functional analysis, particularly Hilbert spaces, Sobolev spaces, and differential calculus in normed vector spaces. Other than these basics, the book is mathematically self-contained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to analyze within reasonable limits (it is not a treatise) the basic mathematical aspects of the finite element method. The book should also serve as an introduction to current research on this subject. On the one hand, it is also intended to be a working textbook for advanced courses in Numerical Analysis, as typically taught in graduate courses in American and French universities. For example, it is the author’s experience that a one-semester course (on a three-hour per week basis) can be taught from Chapters 1, 2 and 3 (with the exception of Section 3.3), while another one-semester course can be taught from Chapters 4 and 6. On the other hand, it is hoped that this book will prove to be useful for researchers interested in advanced aspects of the numerical analysis of the finite element method. In this respect, Section 3.3, Chapters 5, 7 and 8, and the sections on “Additional Bibliography and Comments should provide many suggestions for conducting seminars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called boundary element methods BEM, i.e. finite element approxima tions of boundary integral equations have been improved recently even more vividly then ever before and found some remarkable support by the German Research Foundation DFG in the just finished Priority Research Program "boundary element methods" . When this program began, we could start from several already existing particular activities which then during the six years initiated many new re sults and decisive new developments in theory and algorithms. The program was started due to encouragement by E. Stein, when most of the later par ticipants met in Stuttgart at a Boundary Element Conference 1987. Then W. Hackbusch, G. Kuhn, S. Wagner and W. Wendland were entrusted with writing the proposal which was 1988 presented at the German Research Foun dation and started in 1989 with 14 projects at 11 different universities. After German unification, the program was heavily extended by six more projects, four of which located in Eastern Germany. When we started, we were longing for the following goals: 1. Mathematicians and engineers should do joint research. 2. Methods and computational algorithms should be streamlined with re spect to the new computer architectures of vector and parallel computers. 3. The asymptotic error analysis of boundary element methods should be further developed. 4. Non-linear material laws should be taken care of by boundary element methods for crack-mechanics. 5. The coupling of finite boundary elements should be improved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimization problems subject to constraints governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) are among the most challenging problems in the context of industrial, economical and medical applications. Almost the entire range of problems in this field of research was studied and further explored as part of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) priority program 1253 on “Optimization with Partial Differential Equations” from 2006 to 2013. The investigations were motivated by the fascinating potential applications and challenging mathematical problems that arise in the field of PDE constrained optimization. New analytic and algorithmic paradigms have been developed, implemented and validated in the context of real-world applications. In this special volume, contributions from more than fifteen German universities combine the results of this interdisciplinary program with a focus on applied mathematics. The book is divided into five sections on “Constrained Optimization, Identification and Control”, “Shape and Topology Optimization”, “Adaptivity and Model Reduction”, “Discretization: Concepts and Analysis” and “Applications”. Peer-reviewed research articles present the most recent results in the field of PDE constrained optimization and control problems. Informative survey articles give an overview of topics that set sustainable trends for future research. This makes this special volume interesting not only for mathematicians, but also for engineers and for natural and medical scientists working on processes that can be modeled by PDEs.

Book excerpt: Pierre Grisvard, one of the most distinguished French mathematicians, died on April 22, 1994. A Conference was held in November 1994 out of which grew the invited articles contained in this volume. All of the papers are related to functional analysis applied to partial differential equations, which was Grisvard's specialty. Indeed his knowledge of this area was extremely broad. He began his career as one of the very first students of Jacques Louis Lions, and in 1965, he presented his "State Thesis" on interpolation spaces, using in particular, spectral theory for linear operators in Banach spaces. After 1970, he became a specialist in the study of optimal regularity for par tial differential equations with boundary conditions. He studied singulari ties coming from coefficients, boundary conditions, and mainly non-smooth domains, and left a legacy of precise results which have been published in journals and books. Pierre Grisvard spent most of his career as a full professor at the University of Nice, where he started in 1967. For shorter or longer periods, he visited several foreign countries, and collaborated with some of the most famous mathematicians in his field. He was also an excellent organizer and directed a large number of Ph.D. students. Finally, this volume contains a bibliography of Grisvard's works as well as one paper which he wrote and which has not been published before.

Book excerpt: Subject of this work is the analysis of numerical methods for the solution of optimal control problems governed by elliptic partial differential equations. Such problems arise, if one does not only want to simulate technical or physical processes but also wants to optimize them with the help of one or more influence variables. In many practical applications these influence variables, so called controls, cannot be chosen arbitrarily, but have to fulfill certain inequality constraints. The numerical treatment of such control constrained optimal control problems requires a discretization of the underlying infinite dimensional function spaces. To guarantee the quality of the numerical solution one has to estimate and to quantify the resulting approximation errors. In this thesis a priori error estimates for finite element discretizations are proved in case of corners or edges in the underlying domain and nonsmooth coefficients in the partial differential equation. These facts influence the regularity properties of the solution and require adapted meshes to get optimal convergence rates. Isotropic and anisotropic refinement strategies are given and error estimates in polygonal and prismatic domains are proved. The theoretical results are confirmed by numerical tests.

Book excerpt: The field of discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods has attracted considerable recent attention from scholars in the applied sciences and engineering. This volume brings together scholars working in this area, each representing a particular theme or direction of current research. Derived from the 2012 Barrett Lectures at the University of Tennessee, the papers reflect the state of the field today and point toward possibilities for future inquiry. The longer survey lectures, delivered by Franco Brezzi and Chi-Wang Shu, respectively, focus on theoretical aspects of discontinuous Galerkin methods for elliptic and evolution problems. Other papers apply DG methods to cases involving radiative transport equations, error estimates, and time-discrete higher order ALE functions, among other areas. Combining focused case studies with longer sections of expository discussion, this book will be an indispensable reference for researchers and students working with discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods and its applications.

Book excerpt: This monograph gives a description of all algorithmic steps and a mathematical foundation for a special numerical method, namely the boundary-domain integral method (BDIM). This method is a generalization of the well-known boundary element method, but it is also applicable to linear elliptic systems with variable coefficients, especially to shell equations. The text should be understandable at the beginning graduate-level. It is addressed to researchers in the fields of numerical analysis and computational mechanics, and will be of interest to everyone looking at serious alternatives to the well-established finite element methods.
