Book excerpt: The difference between a woman’s expectations of motherhood and its reality can be vast. Grace in Chaos explores the beautiful, chaotic, messy, magical gift that is motherhood. From the transformations that pregnancy brings, through the miracle of childbirth and the “world-rocking” changes that follow, the author shares her joys and struggles as a mother. This book is a tribute to motherhood, while presenting a frank assessment of the challenges that women face with postpartum depression, endless exhaustion, marital conflict, pervasive “mom guilt,” and feelings of failure. The era of Instagram influencers adds another dimension to this pressure, where picture-perfect social media feeds contradict the sheer daily grind of motherhood. Using humour and real-life experiences, Grace in Chaos highlights the difficult aspects of motherhood in order to prove that mothers are amazing and resilient everyday heroes, who can find added strength by opening up an honest and enduring conversation with each other about both the good and the hard. Despite the ever-present and complicated playbook of emotions that mothers will always wrestle with, they are never alone in their journey if they seek each other’s support. Grace in Chaos hopes to bless mothers everywhere, and bring the message that they are seen, understood, valued, and wildly loved.

Book excerpt: My name is Terry-Ann Allen, and I’ve finally came to the realization that I am a precious daughter in the sight of God, one who truly matters and has a powerful purpose in the kingdom of Christ to shake hell of it's tail. How was I to know this, when I saw myself as the total opposite? Well, it was through the most shattering and discouraging moments of my life, such as close to death sickness, painful heartbreak, humiliation, being despised and rejected. Also, I was often looked on as the black sheep because of my mistakes... but it was during these turbulent moments of my life, where I realized that God was using my rich pain to fuel my rich testimony and purposeful ministry in him to help others out of the same pit of self-doubt, hopelessness, that I was in. God has turned my mess into a message, I am a product of his grace and I’m thankful to him for it all. I'm ROYALTY and my father is king. “A Caterpillar doesn’t become a butterfly overnight, the caterpillar has to undergo a process of metamorphism in order to become that beautiful butterfly”

It was already late winter, and the first thing he saw was the Plum Blossom. The second time he saw her, she was as proud as Bai Mei, as independent as she was independent. She looked as though she could not reject him, but only he could read her arrogance and her poetry. He was a close friend to her, and she was a calamity to him.He was merely a young master who was unrestrained and unrestrained in the eyes of the people. She was also just an oddity that Bai Mei Villa seemed glorious yet sought defeat alone, yet they unexpectedly met on two parallel lines. And their meeting was destined to happen, and was even just a coincidence?Could her painstaking efforts to pursue it be exchanged for a bit of his love?"In this life, there was only one person who was as beautiful as she was in this world."

Book excerpt: The compelling story of heroic women across the country who, despite personal trauma, found grace in difficult times and transformed their personal adversity into pay-it-forward wins by founding nonprofits that help and sustain others, mother to mother. In the midst of environmental chaos, economic uncertainly, and an endless array of health issues, mothers remain the backbone of our families and exponentially impact their communities. Such is the case of the brave women featured in A Mother’s Grace: Healing the World One Woman at a Time. Author Michelle Moore is founder and executive director of Mother’s Grace, an award-winning nonprofit organization that supports thousands of mothers and their children in crisis each year. She endured overwhelming trauma as a young girl when her mother died suddenly, and later struggled with divorce, cancer, and a son with juvenile diabetes. She begins by recounting how women in her circle of mom friends helped heal her childhood wounds and empowered her to claim victories in adulthood. Along the way, through divine intervention, she meets the ten remarkable women featured here whose personal tragedy-to-victory stories changed her forever. Readers seeking guidance during the challenging times we all face in life will find inspiration and hope as they meet mothers who have lived through dire poverty, the death of a child, a spouse’s suicide, terminal childhood cancer, and devastating natural disaster. The poignant and powerful stories of how each found the grit and grace to not only defeat these challenges but also turn them around to impact the world is enlightening and motivating. Finally, Moore calls readers to rise from the depths of their challenges and gives them the tools to do so. Lessons from the moms in this book provide specific life strategies anyone can use to improve her situation and the world around her—one woman at a time.

Book excerpt: Home Education consists of six lectures by Charlotte Mason about the raising and educating of young children (up to the age of nine), for parents and teachers. She encourages us to spend a lot of time outdoors, immersed in nature, handling natural objects, and collecting experiences on which to base the rest of their education. She discusses the use of training in good habits such as attention, thinking, imagining, remembering, performing tasks with perfect execution, obedience, and truthfulness, to replace undesirable tendencies in children (and the adults that they grow into). She details how lessons in various school subjects can be done using her approach. She concludes with remarks about the Will, the Conscience, and the Divine Life in the Child. Charlotte Mason was a late nineteenth-century British educator whose ideas were far ahead of her time. She believed that children are born persons worthy of respect, rather than blank slates, and that it was better to feed their growing minds with living literature and vital ideas and knowledge, rather than dry facts and knowledge filtered and pre-digested by the teacher. Her method of education, still used by some private schools and many homeschooling families, is gentle and flexible, especially with younger children, and includes first-hand exposure to great and noble ideas through books in each school subject, conveying wonder and arousing curiosity, and through reflection upon great art, music, and poetry; nature observation as the primary means of early science teaching; use of manipulatives and real-life application to understand mathematical concepts and learning to reason, rather than rote memorization and working endless sums; and an emphasis on character and on cultivating and maintaining good personal habits. Schooling is teacher-directed, not child-led, but school time should be short enough to allow students free time to play and to pursue their own worthy interests such as handicrafts. Traditional Charlotte Mason schooling is firmly based on Christianity, although the method is also used successfully by secular families and families of other religions.

Book excerpt: From the early days of film came Laurel and Hardy, a comedy team that created slapstick hilarity from life's simplest situations. Some seventy years after their heyday, Arthur Stanley Jefferson and Oliver Norvell "Babe" Hardy are still remembered for the comic chaos they created in film shorts. They gave us something to laugh at by reminding us of our own foibles, in a way that was genuine and unpretentious. The lanky Stan Laurel (1890-1965) and portly Ollie Hardy (1892-1957) had but one objective: to create as many laughs as would fit in one short film. And that, they did. The book begins by exploring their comedy in the early days of film. A chapter is dedicated to each of "the boys"--Laurel from Ulverston, England, and Hardy from the state of Georgia--as a person and performer. Further chapters explore the slapstick and gags of Laurel and Hardy and how the pair survived the transition to sound that left behind many actors of the day. It was only when they began to work for large studios, churning out cookie-cutter scripts, that their art began to lose its way. The book takes the reader through the ups and downs of their careers and to a final comeback. A filmography lists works from 1917 to 1951 with information on availability.
