Wenn wir von Gerechtigkeit sprechen, so geht es dabei meist um die soziale Gerechtigkeit. Der Mensch als Individuum oder auch im Kollektiv, vergleicht sich oder die Gemeinschaft in der er steht, mit einem anderen, nach seiner Meinung besser gestellten, Gegenüber. Der Mensch setzt seine Umstände in Relation zu anderen Umständen, welche aus seiner Sicht ein besseres Leben versprechen, und fordert eine Angleichung, er fordert Gerechtigkeit. Die Gerechtigkeit in der Justiz fordert eine angemessene Verbüssung für den Delinquenten nach begangener Tat. Auch hier wird ein Ausgleich gefordert, in Form von Strafe und Verbüssung. Der Theologe Rolf Baumann meint treffend: „Wir neigen heute mehr oder weniger instinktiv dazu, dem Substantiv ‚Gerechtigkeit‘ eine besondere Nähe zur Welt des Rechts und der Politik zuzuerkennen.“ Der Begriff der Gerechtigkeit trägt also einen bestimmten Inhalt mit sich, welcher sich durch die Medien und den täglichen Gebrauch des Wortes formt. Wenn nun der Mensch, welcher über Gott nachdenkt, diesen Begriff auf Gott abstrahiert, wird er zwangsläufig zu gewissen Schlussfolgerungen kommen, wie denn Gott als gerechter Gott zu sein und was er zu tun habe, wenn er denn dem Gerechtigkeitsanspruch des Menschen Genüge tun will. Ein gerechter Gott will doch, dass es allen Menschen, notabene auf hohem Niveau, gut geht. Wenn nun aber der Mensch seine menschlichen Vorstellungen unverändert auf Gott überträgt, so zeigt er damit eine beschränkte Gottesvorstellung. Gott wäre dann sozusagen gefangen im menschlichen Paradigma und könnte darüber hinaus nicht handeln. Daher ist es unerlässlich, sich immer wieder mit Gottes Eigenschaften auseinanderzusetzen. Denn wie kann sich der Glaube an Gott entfalten, wenn man das Objekt des Glaubens gar nicht richtig kennt? Karl Barth hat in seiner „Kirchlichen Dogmatik“ (im Folgenden: KD) eine ausführliche Eigenschaftenlehre entwickelt, auf welche im Folgenden eingegangen werden soll. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die Gerechtigkeit als Eigenschaft Gottes Bezug genommen. Schliesslich soll von daher auch in aller Kürze daran angeknüpft werden, wie sich Barths Verständnis von Gottes Eigenschaften auf seine Erwählungslehre auswirkt.

Dass in der katholischen Kirche mit großem Echo ein "Jahr der Barmherzigkeit" ausgerufen worden ist, nimmt diesen Grundzug biblischer Theologie auf; es bejaht die Sehnsucht vieler Menschen, von Gott nicht verurteilt, sondern in aller Schwäche geliebt zu werden; es hat aber auch die dunkle Kehrseite einer kirchlichen Lehre und Praxis, die oft als ungerecht und unbarmherzig empfunden wird und dadurch zur großen Glaubwürdigkeitskrise wird, weil anscheinend Prinzipien wichtiger sind als Einzelfälle und Dogmen wichtiger als Personen. Von einem neutralen Standpunkt aus kann man zwar fragen, ob ein solcher Eindruck nicht vielfach vorurteilsbehaftet ist. Aber die unruhige Frage wird dadurch nicht beantwortet, wie glaubwürdig werden kann, dass, von Jesus her geurteilt, das erste Prinzip die Barmherzigkeit in ihrer Einheit mit der Gerechtigkeit und das erste Dogma die Inkarnation der Liebe Gottes in Jesus Christus ist. George Augustin hat mit sicherem Gespür die missionarischen und katechetischen Chancen erkannt, die das Mega-Thema Barmherzigkeit birgt - nicht nur in einem "Jahr der Barmherzigkeit". Er ist dafür prädestiniert und hat daraus viel gemacht.

Anna Bonta Moreland adresses the issue of Muhammad and Christian Prophecy. Diego R Sarrió Cucarella focuses on early Christian theological views of Islam and concludes that Islam has been from the begining a ”disturbing” factor in the Christian view of salvation history. Wilhelmus G B M Valkenberg discusses the impact of Nostra Aetate on the Church’s relation to Muslims, using especially the precedent of Nicolaus of Cues as regards a constructive approach to Islam. Klaus von Stosch adresses a sensitive issue in Muslim-Christian relations and illustrates the advantages of the comparative theology approach for the theology of religions. Complementing this perspective, Peter Jonkers offers a hermeneutical perspective on truth claims, and reflects on ”the religious Other” with references to Jacques Derrida among others. Reinhold Bernhardt argues in favour of a biblically grounded “relational-existential” theory of truth, which would be most helpful with regard to other religions. To conclude, the prominent Catholic specialist on Theology of Religions, Gavin D’Costa, widened the perspective by addressing the relation to Judaism from the point of view of the covenant and the promises of the land. Altogether, the papers of this volume give a clear impression of the status of Roman Catholic Theology of Religions.

Der Titel des Symposiums und des Buches „BARMHERZIGKEIT. Was Menschen am tiefsten wünschen und am schwersten geben“ weist auf den Wunsch und auf die Schwierigkeiten rund um das Stichwort Barmherzigkeit hin. Erst nach dem Symposium legte Papst Franziskus der Kirche am 11. April 2015 – es war der Sonntag der Barmherzigkeit - in einer eigenen Bulle ein „Heiliges Jahr der Barmherzigkeit“ vor, das vom 8. Dezember 2015 bis zum 20. November 2016 dauern soll.

Da er selber kein Theologe, sondern Literaturwissenschaftler, Kulturanthropologe und Religionsphilosoph ist, geht er nicht theologisch an das Thema heran, sondern anthropologisch.
