Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eminent Victorians" is a seminal work of biography and social commentary published by British writer and critic Lytton Strachey. By offering four unique portrayals of notable Victorian people, the book challenges the standard approach to biography. Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Dr. Thomas Arnold, and General Charles Gordon are among Strachey's subjects. Strachey takes a sarcastic and critical perspective to their lives, rather than offering hagiographic narratives. He examines their shortcomings, paradoxes, and character complexity, presenting the human side of these great figures. Strachey's style is funny and astute, providing readers with a new perspective on these great figures. When it was initially released, the book's satirical tone and unorthodox biographical format generated quite a stir. Strachey's presentation of these illustrious Victorians as flawed and deficient questioned the conventional veneration for the era's heroes and heroines. "Eminent Victorians" is more than just a biography compilation; it's a critique of the Victorian society and beliefs that these figures embodied. Strachey's work was influential in altering the biography genre and encouraging a more nuanced and critical assessment of historical characters.

This book was released on 2015-12-02 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine obtaining one hundred and sixty acres of land for FREE! Then comes the real payment: the sweat and toil of living in a remote wilderness and clearing a landscape where the stumps left behind are so large and so numerous the best bet is to use dynamite to remove them. Beginning in 1859 such homesteading typified the arrival of white settlers in British Columbia. The Land Act set out rules by which British subjects could, for agricultural purposes only, pre-empt land. Along the Upper Sunshine Coast, of those who took up the challenge, only some succeeded in carving a life out of this wild land, while many failed. Through prodigious research and the careful cultivation of interviews, Barbara Ann Lambert tells the stories of those resourceful arrivals. Employing the day journals of homesteaders and interviews with their descendants, Lambert conveys the rich history of the Sunshine Coast. From Saltery Bay to Lund, she evokes the struggles and triumphs of those who once lived in this place Lambert calls “paradise”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a broad and multi-dimensional perspective on the topic of knowledge production in and of Africa and seeks changing its post-imperial pattern. This endeavour reflects the concern that in our globalised world, Africa is misrepresented twice: by the ways knowledge about it is selected by gatekeepers of knowledge, and by deliberate suppression of knowledge on Africa. The contributions to this volume address diverse aspects of knowledge production: they examine the existing knowledge-producing frontiers in Africa; they challenge methodological and theoretical universalisms in social science scholarship on the African continent; they look into the interface between the indigenous and modern knowledge systems and the role of African epistemologies and intellectuals in the production of knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major-General Charles George Gordon, was known under many titles, Gordon Pasha, Chinese Gordon and Gordon of Khartoum; all of which stem from his long and distinguished service around the world in the British Army. In this biography, Lt.-General Butler charts Gordon’s progress through the phases of his career with an expert attention to detail. Gordon saw his first active service in the merciless bloodbath of the Crimean war in which he distinguished himself and learnt many lessons on how not to conduct military operations. His military reputation gained further laurels in China, where he commanded the “Ever Victorious Army” during the Taiping rebellion to great success. His enduring fame, however, remains for his conduct in Egypt and the Sudan; he led the valiant garrison in the besieged city of Khartoum against the self-proclaimed Mahdi in 1884. He and the defenders gallantly held on for a year, gaining much public attention, but there was no relief force at hand and Gordon and as many as 10,000 inhabitants were brutally slaughtered. Gordon and his heroic stand at Khartoum are still remembered today and he still stands immortalized in many statues around the countries of the former British Empire. An excellent and well written biography.
