Book Synopsis That Good Night by : Richard Probert

Book excerpt: Condemned to spend his “Golden Years” cooped up in Sunset Nursing Home, 84-year-old Charlie Lambert refuses this ending for himself. With the help of an old sailing buddy living in Maine, Charlie plans to go AWOL permanently, buy a boat, and hit the high seas, where he will live out the remainder of his life on his own terms. Nothing ever goes quite as planned, though, and as Charlie heads towards Maine on a 46-foot sailboat, he strikes up an unexpected romance with Abigail, a woman decades his junior. Things take a darker turn, though, when he discovers a former FBI agent-turned-insurance-investigator hot on his trail. Agent Roberts has been hired to find out what happened to Charlie: bring him back if he’s alive, or determine he’s dead so his estranged sons can collect on his life insurance policy. Roberts doesn’t expect a fight from the old man, but that’s just what he gets. Because Charlie has no intention of ever returning to Sunset, whether in handcuffs or a pine box. Funny, heart-warming, and heart-breaking, That Good Night tells the story of a man who, rather than rail against going “gentle into that good night,” as Dylan Thomas wrote, instead wishes to simply sail into a sunset of his own choosing.

After serving her time, Aggie becomes a maid-of-all-work in the Gartrell household. She is forced to work long, hard hours, and the Dowager Gartrell never misses an opportunity to remind her of her past mistakes. Aggie finds solace in the growing friendship she shares with Viscount Richard Gartrell, the eldest son of the household. Aggie tentatively offers her help with massage to rebuild his body after injuries sustained in the Crimean war, after which their bond deepens. Although Richard is a perfect gentleman, Aggie fears the Dowager will instantly dismiss her if she finds out, for she is determined to see her son marry well and restore the family's fortunes. Her worst fears are realized. The Dowager mistakes their growing friendship for something more, and Aggie’s future is once again in doubt… but worst of all, she has to admit to herself that she has done what she was trying so hard to avoid. There are huge LCD WiFi HD TVs and Facebook requests and thumbs tapping texts and new viral clips of cats doing flips. Wouldn't it be nice to say goodnight to all that? Like the rest of us who cannot resist just a few more scrolls and clicks, you may find yourself ready for bed while still clinging to your electronics long after dark. This book, which is made of paper, is a reminder for the child in all of us to power down at the end of the day. This hilarious parody not only pokes loving fun at the bygone quiet of the original classic, but also at our modern plugged-in lives. It will make you laugh, and it will also help you put yourself and your machines to sleep. Don't worry, though. Your gadgets will be waiting for you, fully charged, in the morning.

Download or read book Live from Aggieland written by Rob Clark and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believe it or not, Aggieland has witnessed a parade of musical icons over the years, each with an intriguing story attached. Picture a young Elvis Presley entertaining the Corps of Cadets at G. Rollie White Coliseum. Flash forward to the “Committee for Johnny Cash,” originated by students after the country singer’s post-Bonfire concert was canceled by the A&M administration amid controversy; despite official disapproval, the students brought him to perform off-campus. Revisit the sunbaked Texas World Speedway in the summer of 1974 and Willie Nelson’s rowdy Fourth of July Picnic, complete with sex, drugs, and a grassfire that torched the car of a young Robert Earl Keen (who would later strike up a long-lasting friendship with fellow A&M student Lyle Lovett). Rewind to Garth Brooks landing at A&M to end an enormous 1998 world tour with three sold-out shows in the newly completed Reed Arena. And many other musical legends have produced memorable moments in the area, including Nat King Cole, R.E.M., and the Ramones. Live from Aggieland explores these stories, including photography and first-hand accounts of the shows and events. The book demonstrates how popular music has enhanced the cultural perspective of Bryan–College Station and has provided students, graduates, and residents with lasting musical memories.
