Everybody loves Miss Molly: a lively septuagenarian who gets a huge kick out of the retro scene and everything associated with it — the clothes, the hairstyles, the dances, and especially her newly-renovated vintage trailer! Tammy, Georgie, and Layla are thrilled with her reaction to their carefully-planned surprise, but their joy turns to concern when Rosa—an unexpected guest at the vintage trailer rally—tells them bluntly that sweet Miss Molly is in big trouble. Her finances have taken a disastrous turn, and she needs help. Now. Someone close to Molly is to blame for this situation—but who? Is it one of the waifs and strays that she welcomes into her home, or is it someone professing to be a good friend? This is a case that is very close to the hearts of Georgie and her friends because one of the ‘lost lambs’ that Molly once took under her wing is one of them—none other than Tammy Dyson, the retro set’s “Rockabilly Princess. There is no way that Tammy is going to let anyone get away with doing the wrong thing by Miss Molly!

Book excerpt: Jeremiah Johnson, The Way We Were, Absence of Malice, Out of Africa, Tootsie, The Firm, Searching for Bobby Fischer--Sydney Pollack has produced, directed or appeared in some of the biggest and most influential films of the last quarter century. His emergence in Hollywood coincided with those of such other innovative directors as John Frankenheimer, George Roy Hill and Sidney Lumet, and with them he helped develop a contemplative style of filmmaking that was almost European in its approach but retained its commercial viability. Film-by-film, this work examines the directorial career of Sydney Pollack. One finds that his style is marked by deliberate pacing, ambiguous endings and metaphorical love stories. Topically, Pollack's films reflect social, culture and political dilemmas that hold some fascination for him, with multidimensional characters in place that generally break the stereotypical molds of the situations. Pollack's directing efforts on television are also detailed, as are his production and acting credits.

Book excerpt: For the few hundred television viewers in 1946, a special treat on the broadcast schedule was the variety show called Hour Glass. It was the first TV program to go beyond talking heads, cooking demonstrations, and sporting events, featuring instead dancers, comics, singers, and long commercials for its sponsor, Chase and Sanborn coffee. Within two years, another variety show, Texaco Star Theatre, became the first true television hit and would be credited with the sales of thousands of television sets. The variety show formula was a staple of television in its first 30 years, in part because it lent itself to a medium where everything had to be live and preferably inside a studio. Most of the early television stars—including Jackie Gleason, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Ed Sullivan, Red Skelton, Dinah Shore, and Arthur Godfrey—rose to prominence through weekly variety shows. In the 1960s, major stars such as Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Judy Garland and Danny Kaye were hosting variety shows. By the 1970s, the format was giving way to sitcoms and dramas, but pop music stars Sonny and Cher, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and Donny and Marie Osmond hosted some of the last of the species. This book details 57 variety shows from the 1940s through the 1990s. A history of each show is first provided, followed by a brief look at each episode. Air date, guest stars, sketches performed, and a listing of songs featured are included.

Then, something terrible happened: they died. Their father tried to bring them back with the help of an underachieving alchemist, but the alchemist bungled it and made them immortal instead! Now, they laugh, cry, sneeze, and pass gas while wrapped in old, thick bandages. They’re 100 percent authentic mummies. For thousands of years, they have roamed quietly, only escaping their sarcophagi in the cover of night. Still, it isn’t all bad for the mummified family. They get to see the world—one museum at a time—and learn everything they never had time to learn before they died. Plus, they’re together. But, when Tut, the serious one, and Toot, the mischievous one, get into trouble in their new museum home, the mummies learn more about today’s world than they ever thought they would. And it might just ruin their best-kept secret. What Mum, Toot, and Tut thought was just another temporary home turned into the mummies’ worst nightmare. After having their identities discovered, they have to put their trust in a couple of nighttime security guards and the museum’s curator to find their way out of this mess before things go too far!

Escaping her failing marriage in the United States, Grace Marisola has returned to Pondicherry to cremate her mother. Once there, she receives an unexpected inheritance—a house on the beaches of Madras—and discovers an older sister she never knew she had: Lucia, who has spent her life in a residential facility. Grace’s attempts to leave her old self behind prove first a struggle, then a strain, as she discovers the chaos, tenderness, fury, and bewilderment of life with Lucia.
