Finding that the level of water in the river is falling, the king’s son Yan travels to the mountains to explore the source of the river. He succeeds in avoiding several traps along the way but eventually succumbs to the magic of the witch queen Grimhelda. When Yan fails to return, the king organises a search party. The members of this party are the king himself, his cook, his secretary and astrologer, two knights and the prince’s younger brother and sister. The exploits of the rescue party in the mountains are at times hilarious, but there is also a strong mythological ‘bite’ to the story, which draws on aspects of Greek and Indian legends. As the tale develops, Yan’s younger brother and sister have an increasingly important part to play, but in the final unravelling of the plot every member of the royal party is directly or indirectly involved. An exciting story with some very engaging characters, The Golden Falcon will appeal to children interested in adventure stories from 8-12 years old.

Orphaned by a cholera epidemic, Neb and his young brother are sent to the desolate farm of their last living relative. But when the savage Horsekin tribes begin raiding the villages along Deverry’s western border, the brothers must flee for their lives. A chance encounter with Salamander—a bard and master of dweomer magic—proves their salvation, as he brings them to the shelter of Tieryn Cadryc’s dun. Here, Neb finds love with his soulmate Branna only to be dragged into a war for the very survival of the kingdom. And though both Neb and Branna are gifted with dweomer magic, they are also facing powerful enemies they have fought before in past lives they no longer remember.

Book excerpt: Alfred of St. Ruan's Abbey is a monk and a scholar, a religious man whose vocation is beyond question. But Alfred is also, without a doubt, one of the fair folk, for though he is more than seventy years old by the Abbey's records, he seems to be only a youth. But Alfred is drawn from the haven of his monastery into his dangerous currents of politics when an ambassador from the kingdom of Rhiyana to Richard Coeur de Leon is wounded and Alfred himself is sent to complete the mission. There he encounters the Hounds of God, who believe that the fair folk have no souls, and must be purged from the Church and from the world.

Book excerpt: Before best-selling author Helen Macdonald told the story of the goshawk in H Is for Hawk, she told the story of the falcon, in a cultural history of the masterful creature that can “cut the sky in two” with the “perfectly aerodynamic profile of a raindrop,” as she so incisively puts it. In talon-sharp prose she explores the spell the falcon has had over her and, by extension, all of us, whether we’ve seen them “through binoculars, framed on gallery walls, versified by poets, flown as hunting birds, through Manhattan windows, sewn on flags, stamped on badges, or winnowing through the clouds over abandoned arctic radar stations.” Macdonald dives through centuries and careens around the globe to tell the story of the falcon as it has flown in the wild skies of the natural world and those of our imagination. Mixing history, myth, and legend, she explores the long history of the sport of falconry in many human cultures—from Japan to Abu Dhabi to Oxford; she analyzes the falcon’s talismanic power as a symbol in art, politics, and business; and she addresses the ways we have both endangered and protected it. Along the way we discover how falcons were mobilized in secret military projects; their links with espionage, the Third Reich, the Holy Roman Empire, and space programs; and how they have figured in countless stories of heroism and, of course, the erotic. Best of all, Macdonald has given us something fresh: a new introduction that draws on all her experience to even further invigorate her cherished subject. The result is a deeply informed book written with the same astonishing lyrical grace that has captivated readers and had everyone talking about this writer-cum-falconer.

Book excerpt: While most books on marketing and services are readable, very few take the student's viewpoint and set out to answer the question Is it understandable? in the affirmative. This book and its pedagogy has been designed precisely with this in mind:v Design: The book has a consistency of design that is innovative, with aesthetic appeals. v Opening and Closing Cases: Every chapter begins and ends with a case. The cases introduce the primary theme and issues discussed in the chapter and closes with analytical tasks for the students. The cases are original, pertaining to Indian situations, companies and protagonists, helping the Indian students to connect.v Objectives: Every chapter has clear learning expectations, get a glimpse of the chapter context and their respective importance. v End-of-chapter Questions: The questions are many and have been designed carefully to enhance learning for the students. There are elements of research, project work, and academic exercises in them.v Illustrations: The book is generous with pleasing and informative charts, tables and diagrams.v Glossary: The Appendix at the end of the book contains a glossary of services and marketing terminologies. v Marketing models: In addition to the text, the appendix also contains major marketing models mentioned in the text, which are frequently used by the marketers.v How to do cases: The Appendix also contains an useful section for all students a template for case discussion and analysis. There are four parts in the book. Part I takes an overview look at the major differences between services and goods and their characteristics, classifications and different models. It methodically analyses the section on the local, domestic and international conditions and environment factors that have affected services. It also examines the importance of Relationship Marketing in services. Part II examines in-depth the marketing of services. It looks sweepingly and with depth at marketing planning and strategy, service buying behaviour, knowledge management and marketing research in services, and the seven marketing mix variables for services. Part III is about the assessment of service delivery and customer relationship management. Part IV deals exclusively with comprehensive service cases. The cases are in addition to the opening and closing cases. The book lucidly explains the basic concepts of services and marketing and fills a long-standing need of the students for a book on both services and marketing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive, self-contained introduction to one of the oldest known recorded languages—Hieroglyphic Egyptian. Unlike other approaches, it is geared toward learning to read one of the masterpieces of Middle Egyptian literature, the story “Shipwrecked Sailor,” written around 2200 bce. The text’s eighteen lessons–organized around such topics as the body, flora, fauna, titles, administration, religion, sexuality, and warfare—cover all the basic grammar and syntax of Middle Egyptian. The book includes exercises for each chapter, sign lists, Egyptian/English and English/Egyptian dictionaries defining all the words and phrases used in the lessons, and a new edition of the tale “Shipwrecked Sailor” with facing commentary. Although the overall approach is literary, Hieroglyphic Egyptian can also be used as an introduction to reading other material, such as biographical inscriptions, religious texts, historical annals, and mathematical or medical papyri. The text is suitable for classroom use, as well as for those who want to learn independently.

At first consisting only of the Horus name, the titulary grew to include other phrases chosen to represent the king’s special relationship with the divine world. By the Middle Kingdom (late twenty-first century B.C.E.), the full fivefold titulary was clearly established, and kings henceforth used all five names regularly. This volume includes all rulers’ names from the so-called Dynasty 0 (ca. 3200 B.C.E.) to the last Ptolemaic ruler in the late first century B.C.E., offered in transliteration and English translation with an introduction and notes.

Book excerpt: Life can be surprising. From this point on my life’s journey, I look back, and it almost seems surreal. As I gaze through that long traveled pathway of time, I can honestly say that had I had a chance at the beginning to glimpse forward to see where this traveled road would take me, I wouldn’t have believed it. And so, this is probably true for a lot of us in my generation. We were born into a time of change, significant change. The kind of change that would set our lives and those of the following generations apart from those of just one generation ahead of us. The previous generations secured our future. They paid for it with their personal sacrifice and unrivaled bravery. That future has also served to make the world a smaller place, whether it be by audio and video communications, computers, or the commonplace of jet travel. As part of this “new” world, I have gone on to see and do things that seemed to be out of reach from that generational point where I entered this life. As I have reached the more “senior” years of my life, I have found the temptation to document a lot of life’s little adventures, or “misadventures” as they may be. I am also responding to those many people who have said “you should write a book”. The technology of today has also made this temptation easy and practical to implement. This book is my first pass at this endeavor, at least in the non-technical realm. The subject matter was an easy choice. The events covered in this book affected many things in many ways. These effects include both future generations and the geographical aspects of the regions involved. More importantly, this story, at least in part, shares common elements with many other people and communities. In some cases, these same things are occurring right now, in probably very similar circumstances. This book just may provide helpful insight to others who now stand where we once stood. Bob Strauss

To survive, the boys became ruthless loners and child soldiers, until they found mystic mentors who transformed them into their true destinies. One: known to the streets as the Supreme Raptor; the other: known to the Greeks as Horus, son of Osiris. Separated by seven thousand years, and yet connected by immortal truth. Born in fire. Baptized in blood. Brutalized by the wicked. Sworn to transform the world and themselves. They are the Alchemists of Kush.
