Book excerpt: Fearless in 21 Days is a testimony of hope and a day-by-day guide to healing the mind using mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual applications for those bound by crippling fear, anxiety, panic disorders, and depression. In the summer of 2013, family and friends watched helplessly as author Sarah E. Ball spiraled into the darkest season of her life. A passionate woman of God, wife, mom of five, and popular blogger, Sarah nevertheless found herself abruptly taken captive by a severe anxiety and panic disorder that left her bedridden for months. Those around her were shocked at her fast derailment because she had always been a very strong, dependable woman. With time and perseverance, her determination and faith in God led her out of anxiety and into a place of complete freedom. After Sarah found deliverance from mental illness she was determined to reach back into the pit and pull the next person out. She began sharing the intimate details of her breakdown and recovery with her readers, creating an online series Fearless in 21 Days as a daily guide to overcoming anxiety. After the series gained an increasing amount of attention, Sarah expanded the series into an award-winning full book manuscript. In Fearless in 21 Days, Sarah takes the readers through 21 revelations that focus on healing the whole self-body, mind, and soul-and bridging the gap between effective mental health therapies and Scripture. The book begins with practical tips that can dramatically reduce the immediate symptoms of anxiety and then dives deeper into spiritual and mental truths to create a hope-filled guide to freedom from anxiety so that readers may boldly and bravely fulfill their purpose in Christ-fearlessly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be drawn into the epic adventure of experiencing God’s plan. This isn’t your typical sex, alcohol, drugs, and obey-your-parents devotional Bible. Instead, it takes an honest look at the messiness of living in a broken world and walking with God through it. Daily readings and book introductions for every book of the Bible paint a picture of the reality that the Bible teaches—that there is more going on in the world than meets the eye. As you explore what it means to have God himself living inside of you, you will learn how to hear his voice, follow his lead, and recognize him in the good, true, and beautiful in the world. The Great Rescue focuses on intimacy with God and a relationship with him in every area of life. The Bible tells us that God had a plan from the beginning of time, and that we were created for a purpose: to fulfill a unique role in his kingdom. It also tells us that there is a very real conflict going on in our broken world between God and his archenemy. God wants us to be a part of his grand story. He wants us to walk so closely with him that we begin to understand his way of life and to participate in the narrative that is God’s story. It's much more than a new way to act. It’s a new way to see. Devotionals from YW Magazine, an eight-time winner of EPA editorial awards of excellence.

Book excerpt: Corrective church discipline is probably the most difficult task of a church and its leaders. It’s often time-consuming, ugly, has fallout, and usually involves criticism. Therefore, rather than deal with the difficulties of implementing church discipline, we often look for ways to get around it, so we don’t have to deal with the problems it might entail. This might be an easier approach, but it’s not the biblical approach. This book tackles this important doctrine head-on and seeks to let God say what He intended to say about church discipline. After all, He is the one who spoke about it in the first place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divine Disorder and the Rescue of God is based on the idea that a kenotic approach is essential to a viable theology. It is deeply influenced by the way such an approach influenced the writings of Donald MacKinnon. Part I argues that God forces us to live in a state of uncertainty, even about God’s existence. However compelling the sense of God’s presence may be, religious experience cannot take that uncertainty away. We have to understand what sort of God would want to impose upon us the disorder of uncertainty. Part II explores this further in terms of God’s willingness to give a degree of independence to the created order, while Part III compares the instability of the created order with that of the moral order. By giving human beings freedom, God opens up the possibility of failure, including that of God. The doctrine of the fall expresses the impossibility of giving human beings autonomy without risking disaster. In Parts IV and V the book looks more closely at the nature of this God who embraces risk, suffering, and even failure. Who is the deity behind this divine disorder? The focus from a Christian perspective is upon the risk, suffering, and failure displayed in the life of Christ. Jesus is drawn into something that it is beyond him to fathom—hence the troubled, uncertain character of his own life. But from a kenotic perspective, even a life marked by failure can be the focal point of God’s self-revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This young adult Bible study, Exodus: God to the Rescue, helps teens to see how God revealed himself as savior in the Old Testament--and how that salvation story continued and culminated in the person of Jesus. Exodus not just about God's actions for Israel long ago; it is also about God's activity in our lives as followers of Christ. In reading about the rescue of the Israelite slaves, we can learn about God's saving love for us in Christ. The way God sustained the Israelites in the wilderness reminds us of some of the sacraments of the Church. For example, our immersion into Christ's death and life through the water of Baptism harkens back to the Israelites' passing through the water of the Red Sea. God's provision of manna offers us an image of the Eucharist, the heavenly bread by which we are nourished--Christ's body and blood. Thus, as we read about God's rescue of his people Israel, we can ask the Holy Spirit to help us understand better our own personal salvation history. We can ask ourselves how we have experienced being rescued from the grip of sin, how we have discovered the personal presence of Jesus as he lives with us in the new covenant he has made through his death and resurrection. Designed as a guided discovery, Six Weeks with the Bible for Catholic Teens introduces high school students to books of the Bible by integrating the biblical text with insightful questions to help youth discern what Scripture means for their lives today. The series provides students with a clear explanation of Biblical text, opportunities for prayer, and a means to enter into conversation with God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age where "church discipline" has fallen out of favor in the context of many churches, Eric Bargerhuff calls the church to a deeper understanding of its nature and purpose as an expression of God's "fatherly love" towards his people. As a biblically mandated activity instituted by Christ himself in Matthew 18, church discipline is an essential practice of any faithful church that is committed to sharing the Gospel and making disciples. Tackling some of the false notions and assumptions surrounding church discipline, Bargerhuff sets forth a historical, biblical, theological, and practical position that centers its identity and purpose on a proper understanding of the cross of Christ. Since the punitive wrath of God was poured out for sin on the cross of Jesus Christ (a penal substitutionary atonement), it is therefore necessary to reject the notion that church discipline is "punishment," but rather it should be seen as God's hand of forgiveness and grace extended for the purpose of restoring, reconciling, and rescuing one of his own, a "sheep that has gone astray." It is to be regarded as God's love in the actions of a forgiven and forgiving community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to cover the entirety of disability history, from pre-1492 to the present Disability is not just the story of someone we love or the story of whom we may become; rather it is undoubtedly the story of our nation. Covering the entirety of US history from pre-1492 to the present, A Disability History of the United States is the first book to place the experiences of people with disabilities at the center of the American narrative. In many ways, it’s a familiar telling. In other ways, however, it is a radical repositioning of US history. By doing so, the book casts new light on familiar stories, such as slavery and immigration, while breaking ground about the ties between nativism and oralism in the late nineteenth century and the role of ableism in the development of democracy. A Disability History of the United States pulls from primary-source documents and social histories to retell American history through the eyes, words, and impressions of the people who lived it. As historian and disability scholar Nielsen argues, to understand disability history isn’t to narrowly focus on a series of individual triumphs but rather to examine mass movements and pivotal daily events through the lens of varied experiences. Throughout the book, Nielsen deftly illustrates how concepts of disability have deeply shaped the American experience—from deciding who was allowed to immigrate to establishing labor laws and justifying slavery and gender discrimination. Included are absorbing—at times horrific—narratives of blinded slaves being thrown overboard and women being involuntarily sterilized, as well as triumphant accounts of disabled miners organizing strikes and disability rights activists picketing Washington. Engrossing and profound, A Disability History of the United States fundamentally reinterprets how we view our nation’s past: from a stifling master narrative to a shared history that encompasses us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if it's not your fault that sex is bad in your marriage? Based on a groundbreaking in-depth survey of 22,000 Christian women, The Great Sex Rescue unlocks the secrets to what makes some marriages red hot while others fizzle out. Generations of women have grown up with messages about sex that make them feel dirty, used, or invisible, while men have been sold such a cheapened version of sex, they don't know what they're missing. The Great Sex Rescue hopes to turn all of that around, developing a truly biblical view of sex where mutuality, intimacy, and passion reign. The Great Sex Rescue pulls back the curtain on what is happening in Christian bedrooms and exposes the problematic teachings that wreck sex for so many couples--and the good teachings that leave others breathless. In the #metoo and #churchtoo era, not only is this book a long overdue corrective to church culture, it is poised to free thousands of couples from repressive and dissatisfying sex lives so that they can experience the kind of intimacy and wholeness God intended.
