Book Synopsis No More Faking Fine by : Esther Fleece Allen
Download or read book No More Faking Fine written by Esther Fleece Allen and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripture reveals a God who meets us where we are, not where we pretend to be. No More Faking Fine is your invitation to get honest with God through the life-giving language of lament. If you've ever been given empty clichés during challenging times, you know how painful it is to be misunderstood by well-meaning people. When life hurts, we often feel pressure--from others and ourselves--to keep it together, suck it up, or pray it away. But Scripture reveals a God who lovingly invites us to give honest voice to our emotions when life hits hard. For most of her life, Esther Fleece Allen believed she could bypass the painful emotions of her broken past by shutting them down altogether. She was known as an achiever and an overcomer on the fast track to success. But in silencing her pain, she robbed herself of the opportunity to be healed. Maybe you've done the same. Esther's journey into healing began when she discovered that God has given us a real-world way to deal with raw emotions and an alternative to the coping mechanisms that end up causing more pain. It's called lament--the gut-level, honest prayer that God never ignores, never silences, and never wastes. No More Faking Fine is your permission to lament, taking you on a journey down the unexpected pathway to true intimacy with God. Drawing from careful biblical study and hard-won insight, Esther reveals how to use God's own language to come closer to him as he leads us through our pain to the light on the other side, teaching you that: We are robbing ourselves of a divine mystery and a divine intimacy when we pretend to have it all together God does not expect us to be perfect; instead, he meets us where we are There is hope beyond your heartache, disappointment, and grief Like Esther, you'll soon find that when one person stops faking fine, it gives everyone else permission to do the same.

Download or read book God with Us written by Ansley L. Quiros and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, the struggle over civil rights was not just about lunch counters, waiting rooms, or even access to the vote; it was also about Christian theology. Since both activists and segregationists ardently claimed that God was on their side, racial issues were imbued with religious meanings from all sides. Whether in the traditional sanctuaries of the major white Protestant denominations, in the mass meetings in black churches, or in Christian expressions of interracialism, southerners resisted, pursued, and questioned racial change within various theological traditions. God with Us examines the theological struggle over racial justice through the story of one southern town--Americus, Georgia--where ordinary Americans sought and confronted racial change in the twentieth century. Documenting the passion and virulence of these contestations, this book offers insight into how midcentury battles over theology and race affected the rise of the Religious Right and indeed continue to resonate deeply in American life.

That need has been thoroughly met in our century by the distinguished poet and classicist Robert Fitzgerald, whose version of "The Iliad" does justice in every way to the fluent vigor and gravity of the Homeric original.
Book Synopsis Questions God Asks Us by : Trevor Hudson
Download or read book Questions God Asks Us written by Trevor Hudson and published by Struik Christian Media. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instead of always looking for answers in the Bible, Trevor Hudson suggests that we start thinking more carefully about the questions that God asks. God desires a conversational relationship with us, and He shows this desire by asking questions. God also gives greater dignity to us by allowing us to wrestle with the questions rather than if we are simply given answers. Questions God Asks Us presents ten questions – five from the Old and five from the New Testament – which God had asked and is still asking us as well. They include: Where Are You? Where Is Your Brother? What Are You Doing Here? Who Do You Say I Am? Do You Want to Get Well? Why Are You Crying? There is a much greater power to transform us in a question than there is in a straightforward answer – each chapter includes a section with practical suggestions to answer God’s question and discover this for yourself. It also includes discussion questions for study groups.Questions God Asks Us is bound in a handy gift format with beautiful full-colour images printed on gloss art paper.
Download or read book God with Us written by Christoph Barth and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1991-04-30 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. "God's dynamic initiative" is the main theme of biblical testimony, says Christoph Barth. Here he expounds the message of the Old Testament in a manner that is faithful to the Old Testament itself -- as an account of the mighty acts of God rather than a series of abstract doctrines. A theology of the Old Testament is not simply a study of God, however. Old Testament theology also encompasses teaching about the world and humanity, about life and death, about origin, nature, and destiny. And Old Testament theology must also take into account the New Testament, which confirms what is announced in Israel's Scripture and thus is part of it. Barth elucidates the importance of the Old Testament for the New Testament and hence for Christians, surveys God's redemptive acts as recorded in the confessional summaries of history in the Old and New Testaments, and offers contemporary applications of these biblical themes. Working his way through the Old Testament, Barth treats nine key topics, each of which deals with one of the divine acts that are the essential subject matter of Israel's Scripture: creation, election of the patriarchs, exodus, wilderness wandering, Sinai revelation, gift of Canaan, election of David (kingship), election of Jerusalem and sending of prophets. He has divided each of the nine chapters into sections on one main aspect of the topic, considering theological, anthropological, soteriological, and eschatological points as well. Throughout his examination of each theme Barth pays special attention to its scriptural context. God With Us is an excellent textbook for introductory or survey courses in the Old Testament: each section begins with a thesis statement, summarizing its contents, and details are treated in small-print sections. Barth originally wrote his Old Testament theology in Indonesian and later rewrote the entire book in English; Geoffrey Bromiley has condensed the original four volumes in this edition.

Book Synopsis The Gospel Project: God Among Us - Bible Study Book by : D. A. HORTON
Download or read book The Gospel Project: God Among Us - Bible Study Book written by D. A. HORTON and published by Lifeway Church Resources. This book was released on 2016-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God Among Us Bible Study Book includes a small-group experience for six sessions, applicable Scripture, and individual study created for personal discipleship. As a man, Jesus--the Son of God--lived among His creation, among the works of His hands. Imagine the God of the universe walking around and talking with the people He made. What would He say? Whom would He seek? Each passage in this study teaches about discipleship through Jesus' encounters. The calling of the twelve disciples exemplifies the bedrock of discipleship, faithfully following Jesus as Savior and Lord. As Jesus taught Nicodemus, new birth comes through faith in God's son and results in transformation. The humility of John the Baptist demonstrated the joy to be found in Jesus Christ's significance and not our own. The questions and answers exchanged with the Samaritan Woman define Living Water, and the rejection of Jesus at Nazareth shows that no opposition or pain can stop Spirit-empowered ministry. Lastly, the fabled encounter between Jesus and Zacchaeus confirms that Jesus has come to seek and save the lost, which makes our hearts respond with exuberant generosity. SESSION TITLES 1.
