Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hunger Movements in Early Victorian Literature, Lesa Scholl explores the ways in which the language of starvation interacts with narratives of emotional and intellectual want to create a dynamic, evolving notion of hunger. Scholl's interdisciplinary study emphasises literary analysis, sensory history, and political economy to interrogate the progression of hunger in Britain from the early 1830s to the late 1860s. Examining works by Charles Dickens, Harriet Martineau, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry Mayhew, and Charlotte Bronte, Scholl argues for the centrality of hunger in social development and understanding. She shows how the rhetoric of hunger moves beyond critiques of physical starvation to a paradigm in which the dominant narrative of civilisation is predicated on the continual progress and evolution of literal and metaphorical taste. Her study makes a persuasive case for how hunger, as a signifier of both individual and corporate ambition, is a necessarily self-interested and increasingly violent agent of progress within the discourse of political economy that emerged in the eighteenth century and subsequently shaped nineteenth-century social and political life.

Polly meets the legendary, Mother of Witches, and encounters a fearsome antagonist, but as always, the Shadow Master is ever near at hand, and with a new friend or two, she finds her way. Still, she finds it’s not easy to wield the power she does, and at the same time interact ‘normally’ in her every day world. The ‘change’ she barely noticed or even less understood in Goblin Lost, becomes clearly manifest in the Mother of Witches. Polly doesn’t really see it yet, but her magical friends do. Polly should not be able to do what she can do, until at least in her mid to late twenties; Melissa Polly is a prodigy!

Highlights featured in this volume include an imposing stone head from an Egyptian sarcophagus; an opulent horse armor commissioned by King Philip IV of Spain; a Tibetan war mask; an early American daguerreotype; Sir Edward Burne-Jones’s enigmatic watercolor; an early twentieth-century Japanese bamboo shrine cabinet; poignant photographs made by Robert Frank for his iconic series The Americans; the Cuban American artist Carmen Herrera’s 1949 tondo Iberic; Steve Miller’s 1961 Gibson guitar; important works by Georg Baselitz; art from the Iranian Saqqakhana school; the vibrant bark painting of Aboriginal Australian artist Nonggirrnga Marawili; and recent creations by artists such as Cecily Brown, Peter Doig, Robert Gober, and Wangechi Mutu.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic Hanukkah tale, shared by families all around the world-- now available in a beautiful anniversary edition. A Caldecott Honor book. An original tale featuring a traditional Jewish folk hero, this clever story, which received a Sydney Taylor Honor, has been a family favorite for decades. On the first night of Hanukkah, a weary traveler named Hershel of Ostropol eagerly approaches a village, where plenty of latkes and merriment should warm him. But when he arrives not a single candle is lit. A band of frightful goblins has taken over the synagogue, and the villagers cannot celebrate at all! Hershel vows to help them. Using his wits, the clever trickster faces down one goblin after the next, night after night. But can one man alone save Hanukkah and live to tell the tale? Trina Schart Hyman’s leering goblins are equal parts terrifying and ridiculous as they match wits with Hershel, trying to keep him from lighting the menorah and celebrating Hanukkah. This beautiful 25th Anniversary Edition includes an insightful afterword from the author and publisher explaining the book's origins, and remembering Trina Schart Hyman, the illustrator who brought the tale to life. This classic picture book is a perfect Hanukkah gift and a wonderful read-aloud. For more tales of this clever folk hero, read The Adventures of Hershel of Ostropol— another collaboration between master storyteller Eric A. Kimmel and Trina Schart Hyman. She’ll finally need to face Belladonna again about the sketchy deal she made with her when she agreed to steal an artifact from the catacombs. Not all bargains turn out to be terrible. Saige will be rewarded well when she repays a favor Lord Gilden owes the fairy who helped his team rescue Aurora. Her reward could prove to be invaluable during her next journey to the underworld. Victrix: After conquering eight realms of the underworld, Saige Sterling and her team only have one dimension left to visit. The ninth realm will be filled with danger and powerful beings. When Aurora is taken by their enemies again, Saige and Ruen will need to rescue her before they can embark on their final mission. Saige’s reclusive kin have been reluctant to admit their true origins. It isn’t easy discovering they aren’t human like they’d always thought. They still have a destiny to fulfill and their task isn’t done yet. They will need to step up and do their part during this war. Now that the end is so near, Saige and Drake will need to resist their desire to complete their bond before the appointed time. All worlds hinge on timing everything perfectly, or their ultimate nemesis will gain the victory they’ve been working so hard to avoid. They will face their final foes and either Order will win, or Chaos will reign.
