Book excerpt: Depression and academic performance are known correlates. Studies of this association have examined limited confounding factors. This study furthers the knowledge of depression in college students and its association with academic performance by examining the influences of race/ethnicity, financial problems, and substance use on the association. Correlation and regression analysis were performed on data from the cross-sectional National College Health Assessment (NCHA) collected on the UNC Charlotte campus. The results suggest a non-linear relationship between depressive symptoms and cumulative grade point average: students with the second lowest level of depressive symptoms have the highest odds of having a C, D, or F cumulative grade average. Year in school, race/ethnicity, cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, other drugs, and debt level emerged as confounders of the association between depressive symptoms and academic performance. These results indicate that depressive symptoms alone do not explain lower grades and that college students could benefit from education on the academic effects of depression, substance abuse, and debt. Students who are mildly depressed may be most at risk for the detrimental effects of depression. Therefore, required depression screening programs also could be beneficial to college students.

Ratchetdemic advocates for a new kind of student identity—one that bridges the seemingly disparate worlds of the ivory tower and the urban classroom. Because modern schooling often centers whiteness, Emdin argues, it dismisses ratchet identity (the embodying of “negative” characteristics associated with lowbrow culture, often thought to be possessed by people of a particular ethnic, racial, or socioeconomic status) as anti-intellectual and punishes young people for straying from these alleged “academic norms,” leaving young people in classrooms frustrated and uninspired. These deviations, Emdin explains, include so-called “disruptive behavior” and a celebration of hip-hop music and culture. Emdin argues that being “ratchetdemic,” or both ratchet and academic (like having rap battles about science, for example), can empower students to embrace themselves, their backgrounds, and their education as parts of a whole, not disparate identities. This means celebrating protest, disrupting the status quo, and reclaiming the genius of youth in the classroom.

In one chapter Dr Mueller is concerned with factors in the measurement of personality and of performance in the classroom, and he reflects upon the specific problem of objectivity in such assessment. Finally, some consideration is given to the problems and characteristics of the socially disadvantaged child and to the role of the teacher in helping to solve some of the learning problems of these children.
