Book excerpt: In Thurber's world, sex is less a quest for pleasure or an expression of love than it is the retardation of emotion. Download or read book The Marrano written by Howard Rose and published by R. Saroff. This book was released on 1992 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Three of The False Messiah Trilogy.?Although The Marrano was the last of the "False Messiah Trilogy" to be published, its action is mostly contemporaneous with Oak Street Beach, the volume immediately following The Pooles of Pismo Bay (both issued in 1990). The three novels together refract facets of Rose's preoccupation with the loss of ideals in American life, as represented through Matthew Lenart, Gordon Abul, and Reuben Poole. The story begins in Minneapolis ("There is much madness in Minneapolis," the narrator declares), where young Matthew Lenart, who tells the story, grew up as the wealthy son of a newspaper tycoon, and within sight of the estate of Shem Abul, Gordon's father, a wealthy Sephardic Jewish merchant. The Lenarts move on the highest rungs of Minneapolis society, and the Abuls contrive a similar station, but after Gordon steals Matthew's wife, appearances start to disintegrate, revealing a clandestine agenda. Two brutal murders set Lenart off in search of Gordie, whom he finds on Chicago's Oak Street Beach oscillating between a smart set of society hangers-on of polymorphous sexuality, and the tenderloin district riffraff. A mad mix of people and almost surreal events collide with subterranean Israeli espionage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you love the harp? The French harpist Henriette Reni (18751956) asked this question of each student, and it remained her ideal throughout her life. This book explores the circumstances which surrounded the beginning of Henriette Renis career as a masterful harpist and composer. Through her celebrated performances of her Concerto en ut mineur, she gained acclaim simultaneously as a virtuosic performer and composer. In the wake of her success, several new masterpieces by respected composers appeared, including Pierns Concertstck and Ravels Introduction et Allegro. The elements of Renies virtuosity are traced through her famous Lgende, and her less-known Deux promenades matinales. Her compositional style is explored through her Scherzo-Fantaisie for harp and violin and her Concerto en ut mineur. As a teacher, Renis influence echoed throughout the world. Her profound influence has been evident through the vision of her own students, including Susann McDonald, Marcel Grandjany, Mildred Dilling, Odette Le Dentu, Odette de Montesquiou, Bertile Fournier, Emmy Hrlimann, Bertile Robet Auffray, and Marie Astrid DAuffray. The crystallization of Renis teaching practice is described through her Mthode complte de harpe (Complete Method for Harp) and her twelve volumes of harp transcriptions, Les classiques de la harpe. The amount of literature about Renis life and work is disproportionate to the deep imprint she made upon the harps history and repertoire. This book is a start to further recognizing her vast importance to the establishment of the harp.
Download or read book Film Music written by Roy M. Prendergast and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expanded, updated, and revised edition of Film Music brings together the experience and insights of the professional film music editor with the scholarship and concerns of the film critic and historian. In this pioneering work, film music--from its beginnings to the present day--is analyzed both as composition and as an integral element of cinematic expression. Beginning with an extensive historical overview, the author recreates the process by which film music composers developed their own forms out of typical screen action. The techniques and achievements of filmmakers from the silent and early sound film eras to the 1990s are examined, including the unique demands of music for the rapidly changing images of cartoons and animated films. A new chapter about music for television has been added to the very informative discussion of techniques for synchronizing music to picture. And the latest technological advances are described in an entirely new section dealing with contemporary methods and tools, including video post-production, the advent of digital audio, and the pervasive influence of the music synthesizer. Replete with music examples drawn from actual film scores, this comprehensive study concludes with an extensive and up-to-date bibliography of related reference works.
