Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a Festschrift to Professor Sir Stanley Peart, Professor of Medicine at St. Mary's Hospital and Medical School, University of London since 1956, who has influenced and directed many of us in the better understanding of the patho physiological basis and the clinical practice of hypertension. It commemorates, and we hope will preserve, memories of a special occasion when we met to honour him at the Castella de Pomeiro, Como, Italy. At this meeting his "extended family" (pictured above) shared experiences, discussed current scientific and clinical ap proaches in hypertension research and indulged in reminiscences of their exciting times on his Unit at St. Mary's. We particularly hope that this volume will illustrate the multifaceted approach needed in investigating and managing hypertension and that it will additionally remind Sir Stanley of the admiration and warm affection with which he has been, and will always continue to be regarded. Christopher J. Mathias Peter S. Sever Introduction P. S. Sever Welcome to Castello de Pomerio, for what I feel sure is to be a very special occasion. As all of you know, Stan Peart is retiring after 31 years as professor and head of the department of Medicine at St. Mary's, and after nearly 40 years of distinguished research in basic and clinical science related to the cardiovascular system, the kidney and particularly to hypertension.

Download or read book Tropical Pathology written by H. Spencer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General pathology works nomothetically, whereas specific pathology works idiographically. Modern pathological anatomy on the other hand seeks to rise above the level of merely gathering data and to proceed to a practical knowledge of defined pathological aspects and patterns. jEAN MARTIN CHARCOT's con ception of the entite morbide as the abstract basis of nosologically independent phenomena is paradigmatically corroborated in an especially impressive way by the study of tropical diseases. And so the idea suggested itself that we should present the main pathological patterns from tht; fielq. of tropical pathology with particular reference to their interconnection. We s~on came to the firm con clusion that such a compilation could be success_iully ~undertaken only by a pathologist from the English-speaking world. The. classic practical knowledge of our British colleagues, which has matured in world-wide experience, would be bound to find its ideal verification here. And so we turned for help to our friend Prof. WALTER PAGEL (Dr. med., Dr. h. c. Basle, Dr. h. c. Heidelberg) in London. He immediately referred us to Prof. HERBERT SPENCER. That we managed to enlist the help of Professor SPENCER is entirely due to Professor PAGEL's kind offices. We owe the fact that the undertak ing has been completed in relatively so short a time to Professor SPENCER's exceptional knowledge both of his subject and of the field-workers themselves.

Book Synopsis Infections in the Elderly by : M.J. Denham
Download or read book Infections in the Elderly written by M.J. Denham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public health and antiseptic measures, vaccination and antibiotics, have all contributed to the reduction in the incidence and impact of diseases due to infections in younger age groups. Unfortunately, however, infections remain a very important cause of both morbidity and mortality in the elderly. The reasons for the continued effect of infection on the older person are multifactorial. Firstly, the immune response alters with age and may result in opportunistic infections. Secondly, while the diagnosis and management of some infections in the elderly can present little problem, altered signs and symptoms in other older patients, especially the old elderly, can cause considerable diagnostic difficulties with resulting delays in definitive treat ment. Thirdly, a degree of complacency can develop because some infec tions are seldom seen and, consequently, may not be considered in the differential diagnosis. The presence of other, more common, diseases serve only to distract attention and confuse the diagnosis. Since the number of elderly people is increasing, the need for continued high standard of skill in diagnosis and management is emphasized. These factors are considered in this book by contributors who are experi enced in their fields. The altered immune response with age, the appropriate use of antibiotics in older people and the latest developments of therapy are reviewed. Infections in various body systems are considered, with emphasis on differing presentations and diagnostic difficulties, ways of improving diagnostic skills as well as management and treatment.
Book Synopsis Case Studies in US Trade Negotiation Volume 1 by : Charan Devereaux
Download or read book Case Studies in US Trade Negotiation Volume 1 written by Charan Devereaux and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade policy has moved from the wings onto center stage. Between 1992 and 2000, US exports rose by 55 percent. By the year 2000, trade summed to 26 percent of US GDP, and the United States imported almost two-thirds of its oil and was the world's largest host country for foreign investors. America's interest in a more open and prosperous foreign market is now squarely economic. This volume presents cases on five important trade negotiations, all focused on "making the rules," or the process of establishing how the trade system would operate. The cases not only explore the changing substance of trade agreements but also delve into the negotiation process. They explore not just the what of trade, but the who, how, and why of decision-making. By examining some of the most important recent negotiations, the reader can come to understand not just the larger issues surrounding trade, but how players seek to exert influence and how the system is evolving on a day-to-day basis. This book presents a coherent description of the facts that will allow for discussion and independent conclusions about policies, politics, and processes.

Book Synopsis The Pharmaceutical Industry by : Lesley Richmond
Download or read book The Pharmaceutical Industry written by Lesley Richmond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pharmaceutical industry has changed beyond all recognition in the past 100 years. The modern industry is constantly in the news as new breakthroughs in medical treatment are announced, often provoking ethical and social debates about the implications of new technologies. This volume facilitates the study of the industry by providing information on the present location of pharmaceutical archives. The core of the book consists of a business-by-business guide to the industry's records. Each entry includes a brief history of the company, a summary of its surviving archives and a bibliography of related publications. Similar entries exist for trade associations and schools of pharmacy associated with the industry and there are two appendices listing small collections of records held and relevant public records. The historical compendium is supplemented by three introductory essays, written by leading academics in the field, outlining the history of the industry and describing the nature and uses of the archival records which it has created. These essays are supplemented by a select chronology of pharmaceutical legislation and a select bibliography of histories relating to the pharmaceutical industry in general. A users guide helps readers understand how the business entries were constructed and is supplemented by a glossary of terms used in this book As such, this book will no doubt prove an invaluable resource to researchers undertaking comparative studies of the pharmaceutical industry, the history of medicine and the retailing of medical drugs.
