Book excerpt: I remember a time in my earlier days, when problems would arise, I would be scared, confused, and needing answers, so I would run to God. I knew He could solve any problem I had, so I would chase Him hard, reading His Word, going to church, praying, and being mindful of Him all day long. Well, once my problem was solved, once the waters calmed down in my life, I went right back to barely even thinking about God. I would go about my days, months, and sometimes, even years without really even acknowledging God at all in my life. I believed in God and I even loved God at some level, but He wasn't a big part of my life. Again, something would happen in my life, another problem, another heartache, another crisis. And what did I do? I ran to God! What does this have to do with discarded empty bottles? You will find the conclusion of this little writing nestled within the pages of this book. While out for my morning walk the other day, I was talking to God about comprehending His love for me in my heart and not just my head. I know when I reveal my prayer to you I will expose my weaknesses in faith, but here it is, my prayer that morning. "Lord, I need you to help me grasp your love for me. I need to know who you are to me and who I am in you. I need you to manifest yourself to me. I am fighting this fight of faith, but sometimes, I just want to feel your presence in such a way it would be as if my heart swells with your love, to recognize every day of my life." I walk on, the fog is so thick, and I look ahead and can barely see anything. I glance back, the same thing. I hear God speak. What did He say? Find out in this book, He still speaks in parables and revelations.

Book excerpt: The 1980s witnessed the ascendency of Russian women in multiple spheres of artistic creation, including literature, film, and painting. This volume may thus be said to engage not only women's artistic production but, indeed, the best and most colourful of recent Russian culture. Treating contemporary Russian women's creativity, it approaches women's texts, films, and canvasses from a range of perspectives, from anti-gendered to feminist. Some of the essays introduce writers not previously well studied, others challenge conventional interpretations and assumptions, while still others yield original viewpoints through novel juxtapositions. In addition to offering insights into the various artists under analysis, the essays map the wide terrain of issues and methodologies proliferating in cultural criticism today, and mirror the diversity that is one of the most appealing features of women's creativity in contemporary Russia.

Book excerpt: In Return Engagements artist and critic Việt Lê examines contemporary art in Cambodia and Việt Nam to rethink the entwinement of militarization, trauma, diaspora, and modernity in Southeast Asian art. Highlighting artists tied to Phnom Penh and Sài Gòn and drawing on a range of visual art as well as documentary and experimental films, Lê points out that artists of Southeast Asian descent are often expected to address the twin traumas of armed conflict and modernization, and shows how desirable art on these themes is on international art markets. As the global art market fetishizes trauma and violence, artists strategically align their work with those tropes in ways that Lê suggests allow them to reinvent such aesthetics and discursive spaces. By returning to and refashioning these themes, artists such as Tiffany Chung, Rithy Panh, and Sopheap Pich challenge categorizations of “diasporic” and “local” by situating themselves as insiders and outsiders relative to Cambodia and Việt Nam. By doing so, they disrupt dominant understandings of place, time, and belonging in contemporary art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One night under the stars on a beach in L.A., Marco, Sylvester, and Thomas leave their meaningless lives behind to set out on the Pacific Ocean for the Polynesian Islands. Sylvester provides his own sailboat, the Starfish, to realize his dreams as a captain. Marco is fulfilling his prophetic obsession to reach Polynesia, while Thomas just wants to escape his dull life. After a torturous journey, the young men manage to sail to the heart of the Pacific and begin life as free spiritual souls. But sailing aboard a precarious boat brings endless perils as well as constant disagreements between Sylvester and Thomas. After months at sea, the three miraculously catch sight of the islands. Thomas meets a woman on Carolina Island, and abandons his friends on their final leg of the journey. When the Starfish ends up wrecked, the boys must become men, and their character is truly tested. The Men Who Wrecked is a metaphysical parable. As much as a sailing adventure, it’s also a perilous search on the ocean to find oneself.
