Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Antiquities of Glamorganshire and Its Families: With Numerous Illustrations on Wood From Photographs, of Castles, Abbeys, Mansions, Seals, Tombs, Arms, &C IT has long been a matter of surprise that so important a county as that of Glamorgan has never had its History written. Several of the shires of Wales, less important than this, have long since been described and illustrated by appropriate memoirs. The History of Brecknockshire, by Theophilus Jones; of Monmouth shire, by Cox, and by Williams; of Anglesey, by Rowlands, and by Angharad 'llwyd and of Cardiganshire by Meyrick, - all supply valuable details. F enton's Tour through Pembrokeshire, and Mr. Williams' brief History of Denbighshire, complete our treasury of county histories. Montgomeryshire, through the labours of the Party's-laud Club, bids fair to have its annals searched out and illustrated with greater completeness than has fallen to the lot of any other Welsh or English county. Carmarthenshire, Carnarvonshire, Flintshire, Merioneth, and Glamorgan - all counties rich in event, all prominent in their activity during the most stirring periods - have their annals still unwritten. The present work, planned on a scale which as far as possible avoids voluminousness and expense, is intended to be a condensed sketch of the ancient and middle-age story of Glamorganshire and its Families, with a supplementary part on the genealogy of its leading modern Families. In substance it is also incorporated in the Author's larger work, entitled Annals and Antiquities of the Counties and Families of Wales, in which Glamorgan has received a treatment exceptionally extensive, corresponding with its relative importance. Especial attention has been given to the conquest by the Normans, and to the Old and Extinct Families both of Norman and British extraction. The link of connection between the domestic and official annals of past and modern times is supplied by' the elaborate Rolls of High Sheriffs and Members of Parliament, from the age of Henry VIII. Downwards. In all these respects it supplies information never before made accessible to the general public. I In the ancient British period, care has been taken not to mar and encumber the history by the introduction of legendary matter. Among the illustrations, through the courtesy of the present Duke of Beaufort, several interesting engravings have been introduced from the account, recently privately printed, of the Progress of the first Duke of Beaufort, Lord President of Wales, in 1684 See pp. 59 - 61, It 7. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Unrequited Loyalty: The Life of Edward Somerset, Earl of Glamorgan, Marquess of Worcester I have endeavoured to set forth this life of Edward Somerset, first Earl of Glamorgan, second Marquess of Worcester, in a spirit answering unto his great loyalty. Though it has been impossible to avoid presenting the actions of His Majesty King Charles I. Of blessed memory, in a light otherwise than unfavourable, still I have desired to utter no harsh or disloyal expressions in reference to a King, so truly venerated and loved, by the hero of this Memoir. It remains for me to crave the indulgence of my readers, in that I have but faithfully portrayed Glamorgan, and have avoided forming any exaggerated or romantic notions of his merits and transactions, leaving the story of his noble life untouched by any word of praise or admiration. It is needless to say that I do but write of facts carefully verified, and of such things as I have warrant for under extant documents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Morgan: Being a Contribution Towards the History of the Lordship of Glamorgan Glamorgan, within the lordship. It was described as sicut regale. Cardiff and the Taff were his Bungay and Waveney and once there seated, no King of Cockney could reach him. Coyty, and at least one hill lordship, comprising the two commotes of Senghenydd, were held of him per baroniam; Avan, the only im portant lowland lordship in the hands of a Welsh family of rank, was held by sexjeantry. Most of the manors were held directly of Cardiff by the tenure of Castle-guard; a few were held immediately of the larger manors. All the greater tenants, with the exception of the Lords of Avan and Senghenydd, and perhaps one or two more, were of Norman blood, and also held estates in England, chiefly within the Honour of Gloucester, within the counties of Gloucester, Somer set, Devon, and Dorset. The Liber Niger gives a list of the knights who held of the Honour, and in it occur the names of twenty who also held lands in Glamorgan. These are Berkerolles, de Cardiff, Co n, Constantine, Croc, Grenville, de Londres, Maisi, e la Mare, Ner bert, Norris, Pennard, Reigny, St. Quintin, Le Sore, Somery, Umfranville, Villers, Walsh, and de Winton. This list, moreover, for some unknown reason omits a. Number Of other knightly tenants who held lands in Devon, Dorset, and Somerset, also within the Honour, and many of whom not only held lands but have given their names to parishes and manors in Glamorgan. Such are Bawdrip, Hawey, de la More, St. John, and Turberville, and m the latter class, Barry, Bonville, Cantelupe, Fleming, and Sully. Of the awful circumstances which oc curred to him soon after his return from this journey, and the gradual progress of religious care to walk acceptably in the Divine sight, we find some account in a diary, which he was induced to keep as an incitement to more watchfulness over his thoughts and actions; from which many of the following remarks are ex tracted. The moon had risen an hour ago, and hung like a round mirror of burnished silver close above the glittering stream of Thames, as he swept broadening down to Westminster Bridge. The Abbey towers rose sharply into the clear air, and caught the moonlight full upon their heads, but beneath them on the further side lay a wide region of silent and mysterious shadow. In the shadow paced the figure of a man. By the slow and monotonous regularity of his footfalls as he passed backwards and forwards, you might have taken him for a sentinel on guard. But to a closer look the long high-collared coat, the quaint and ample outline of his hat, and a certain balance in his step betrayed the seafaring man, and gave a hint of his rank. His figure and the easy swing of his movements proclaimed him strong, but the obscurity concealed all other characteristics.
