Book excerpt: Silent film starlet Mary Margaret is alone in her Hollywood bungalow, about to kill herself. A former Shakespearean stage actor, now a drunken silent movie leading man with a bad reputation, calls on her and tries to convince her to face life. In the course of their hilarious conflict, images of the actor's past emerge. His efforts to help Mary Margaret live force him to deal with his own demons and find a way to cope with the terrible secret that eats away at him like the cannibal Laestrygonians in Homer's Odyssey. Funny and rich in character and language, this powerful and unusual love story, part of the Pendragon series of plays, is rich with great audition monologues and scenes. Don Nigro's followers will recognize some of the characters from Chronicles, Anima Mundi, Beast with Two Backs, Autumn Leaves and Dramatis Personae--all plays from his series Pendragon Plays

Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1980, Aunt Liz is trapped in a nursing home in the hilly agricultural country of east Ohio while her niece Becky and Becky's revolting husband try to steal and destroy her farm. Her life is further complicated by a harried but sympathetic young nurse, her nomadic nephew, a bewildered friend, and her sisters cranky Molly and Dorothy, a deaf mute piano player. Memories of her beautiful and long dead Jessie also intrude, as well as her outrageous fellow inmate, Mr. Kafka, who tries to teach her about muskrat traps and immortality. This funny and moving play was first produced with great success at Capital Rep in Albany; it has particularly rich roles for a mature cast. November is part of the author's cycle of Pendragon Plays; fans will recognize some of the characters from other plays in the series.

Book excerpt: In Greenwich Village in the late 1920s Al, an artist, moves into a rooming house on Macdougal Street and finds himself being pulled deeper and deeper into the lives of its inhabitants. Above him live Mary Margaret, a lost actress from Ohio, and her philandering poet boyfriend, Jem. Al meets Mary Margaret when she comes home drunk one night and blunders into his bed. He falls in love with her. The landlord, McLish, keeps bursting into Al's room to help him with his romance. McLish, a failed writer, has his own troubles: a beautiful but compulsively disloyal wife. And somebody keeps playing "The Saint James Infirmary Blues." Al's attempt to rescue Mary Margaret is the core of this richly atmospheric love story which vividly recreates the world of artists and writers in this era. (Mary Margaret also appears in his Anima Mundi and Laestrygonians.) In Pendragon Plays.

Book excerpt: Jane Lamb, an orphan, finds a home at Mrs. Turley's Bunch of Grapes Inn in Boston during the Revolution. The colorful, eccentric and dangerous regulars she encounters there include a demonic roustabout who is a patriot, a traitor or a bit of both; Ophelia, a mad girl who talks to mice, and the Oyster Man, a street vendor obsessed with the Boston Massacre where he received a wound that has scrambled his brains to an alarming degree. Jane learns a vivid lesson about the dark underside of patriotic mythology in this nightmarish world of murder, secrets, betrayal and lunacy. This savagely funny, robust and haunting play is part of the author's series Pendragon Plays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘It’s now seventy years since the end of the Second World War, and those who lived through those momentous years are getting fewer in number each year,’ says Porthcawl author Malcolm Cowper, ‘so I decided to try to capture their memories before it was too late.’ He interviewed some forty people in the former Glamorgan county, and talked to men who served in the front line, women who laboured in the factories producing vital weapons of war, and children with memories of evacuation, gas masks, and nights spent in air raid shelters. The recollections of a man who survived the horrors of a Japanese prison camp, of women who did the dangerous work of manufacturing bombs at the Bridgend Arsenal, of a young boy in the Swansea blitz, wearing only his underpants and carrying his younger brother on his back, running for shelter as bombs rained down, and of a woman whose grandmother was buried under tons of rubble when the last V2 rocket of the war landed on her London apartment block: these are just some of the amazing stories in this collection. ‘Talking to the war veterans was fascinating,’ says Malcolm, ‘and I came to realise what an extraordinary generation they were, and how much we owe them for their fortitude and resilience in the face of one of the most barbaric and ruthless enemies this country has ever had to face. God knows how awful our lives would be today if we had lost that war.’ Glamorgan’s Greatest Generation is a collection of stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary times, capturing the comradeship, humour and sense of duty that carried them through fear, loss and sacrifice.

It is also a very rare one: in nearly 60,000 first-class matches it has been achieved only 81 times. Surprisingly, although books have been written about Hedley Verity’s world record ten for 10 in 1932 and Jim Laker’s all-ten in the 1956 Old Trafford Test, nobody has ever written a book describing every all-ten. Until now. All Ten chronicles each all-ten, from Edmund Hinkly’s at Lord’s in 1848 to Zulfiqar Babar’s at Multan over a century and a half later. All-tens have been taken at many different venues, from famous Test match grounds to outgrounds on which first-class cricket is no longer played. Some were taken by great bowlers such as Colin Blythe and Clarrie Grimmett, some by less well-known ones including Harry Pickett of Essex and Tom Graveney’s brother Ken. Some bowlers were at the beginning of their careers, some were nearing the end. You will read about them all here and their very special feat, and maybe wonder why the bowlers at the other end didn’t strike even once, why many of the greatest bowlers of all-time never took an all-ten, and why all-tens have become much rarer in the last half century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outbreak of the Second World War came towards the closing stages of the 1939 cricket season. Hitler permitted us almost to complete an exceptionally interesting season, Sir Home Gordon, wrote in the Cricketer magazine, When shall we see the stumps pitched again? As the West Indies touring team canceled their last five matches and sailed home before the U-boat threat developed, the treasures at Lords, including the Ashes, were sent to a secret location for safekeeping. The Marylebone Cricket Club cancelled its tour to India - England played under the MCC banner then.During the ensuing conflict twelve test cricketers (five English, two South Africans, one Australian and one New Zealander) perished together with 130 first class players. In this superbly researched sequel to Final Wicket, covering cricketing fatalities during The Great War, this book reveals each mans career details, including cricketing statistics, and the circumstances of death. There is also a brief history of the game during the War. Arguably the period between the two world wars was the golden age of cricket, and this book honors those who made it so only to die serving their countries in a different way.

This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playing in a first-class match gives a cricketer a certain cachet. For ever after, opponents know that such-and-such played ‘big cricket’ and will expect him to perform accordingly. Even when his achievements lie elsewhere, biographers and obituarists will sagely note his appearances, however limited, and readers will infer that the subject has a special talent for the game. Nine thousand cricketers have played in just one first-class match, but for some their one appearance was more memorable than for others, for good reasons or otherwise. In 1924, Fred Hyland spent less than ten minutes on the field of play before rain washed out the game. Poor Josiah Coulthurst didn’t even step onto the playing area in a damp Lancashire contest in 1919. Emile McMaster’s only match, in South Africa in 1889, was later awarded Test match status. Bob Richards, playing for Essex at Leyton in 1970, didn’t learn till afterwards that his solitary appearance was a first-class game. Nobody can now be sure who was the Wilkinson who played a match at Oxford in 1939. Some one-match wonders have achieved much in their brief days in front of the cricket-watching public, centuries even and ‘eight-fors’: others have gone on to exceptional achievements in fields sporting, political and military. Keith Walmsley reports on the ‘struts’ and ‘frets’ of some players who appeared just once on the first-class ‘stage’ and then were ‘heard no more’.
