Book excerpt: A socially anxious college student discovers she has superpowers—and they need babysitting—in the first book of an original superhero series. Power Day occurs every year on September 15. Across the world, formerly regular people awaken with superhuman abilities—and labels to go with them. They become the next generation of Heroes . . . and Villains. September 15 is also Emily Wright's first day on campus. While everyone else is out celebrating the start of their college career, Emily's hiding in her dorm room. She wonders if it's possible to earn a degree while completely avoiding eye contact with anyone. All she wants is to learn a little and maybe get over her anxiety. Instead, she's granted a superpower and categorized as villainous. So, Emily panics—and inadvertently conjures up a pint-size supervillain sidekick. Emily has no intention of doing anything—evil or otherwise—with her powers. And if she has to babysit an increasing number of "little sisters" in order to stay under the radar, so be it. But can Emily gain control of her life, or will she drown in a sea of supervillainy and cuddles?

Book excerpt: Attempting to conceal her "villainous" nature, a superpowered college student embarks on an unintentional road to infamy, in this sweet sequel. Emily Wright was prepared to spend her first year on campus under the radar and out of sight, propelled by the force of her social anxiety. Fate, however, cursed her with the ability known as Sister Summoning. Revealed on Power Day—the annual event where people discover their superpowers—Emily's new talent caused five "sisters" to suddenly pop into existence. And as if that weren't enough, Emily found herself officially categorized as a villain. Now known as the Boss, Emily must keep her "villainy" a secret while babysitting her supersiblings. Unpredictable and mischievous, yet devoted and helpful, the quintet menagerie of sisters—possessing the characteristics of a bear, an owl, and a trio of raccoons—will do anything to help Emily establish her Evil Empire. Of course, Emily doesn't want anything to do with evil, but she has a family to clothe, house, and feed. With the help of volunteer minion Sam, a psych major interested in studying Emily, the Boss takes over the local protection racket to earn some cash. With her no-evil-intent policy firmly established, Emily's little sisters begrudgingly agree to defend the local businesses against criminals. But word of the Boss's gang is spreading among hero and villain alike, placing Emily squarely in the social media spotlight—and the crosshairs of some powerful enemies . . . The second volume of the hit LitRPG fantasy series—with almost two million views on Royal Road—now available on Audible and wherever ebooks are sold!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the two decades after the turn of the millennium, Vladimir Putin's control over Russian politics and society grew at a steady pace. As the West liberalized its stance on sexuality and gender, Putin's Russia moved in the opposite direction, remolding the performance of Russian citizenship according to a neoconservative agenda characterized by increasingly exaggerated gender roles. By connecting gendered and sexualized citizenship to developments in Russian popular culture, Julie A. Cassiday argues that heteronormativity and homophobia became a kind of politicized style under Putin's leadership. However, while the multiple modes of gender performativity generated in Russian popular culture between 2000 and 2010 supported Putin's neoconservative agenda, they also helped citizens resist and protest the state's mandate of heteronormativity. Examining everything from memes to the Eurovision Song Contest and self-help literature, Cassiday untangles the discourse of gender to argue that drag, or travesti, became the performative trope par excellence in Putin's Russia. Provocatively, Cassiday further argues that the exaggerated expressions of gender demanded by Putin's regime are best understood as a form of cisgender drag. This smart and lively study provides critical, nuanced analysis of the relationship between popular culture and politics in Russia during Putin's first two decades in power.

Mikaela Marchand is living the polished life she always planned for: a successful New York lawyer, with a promotion in her sights and a devoted boyfriend by her side. She’s come a long way from the meek teen she was growing up in small town Georgia, but the memory of her adolescence isn’t far—in fact, it’s splashed across a massive billboard in Times Square. An old photograph of Mikaela and her former best friend, Julie, has landed on the cover of a high-profile fashion magazine advertised all over the city. And when Julie files a lawsuit, Mikaela is caught in the middle as defense lawyer for the magazine. Not only will she have to face Julie for the first time in years, Mikaela’s forced to work closely with the photographer in question: the former love of her life--and Julie’s ex-husband--Cameron Murphy. Mikaela needs to win the case to get her promotion--and as a junior partner, she has no margin for error. But unresolved feelings still exist between Cam and Mikaela, and jealousy always made Julie play dirty… With flashbacks to summers of first loves and fragile friendships, Long Past Summer looks at the delicate and powerful thread that binds and breaks friends and flames.

The contributions to Russian Performances foster larger intellectual communities by showcasing new work in Russian Studies from the disciplines of anthropology, art history, dance studies, film studies, cultural and social history, literary studies, musicology, political science, theater studies, and sociology. Highly recommended.” —The New York Times Andrea Hairston's historical fantasy Will Do Magic for Small Change presents a tale of alien science and earthbound magic and the secrets families keep from each other. Cinnamon Jones dreams of stepping on stage and acting her heart out like her famous grandparents, Redwood and Wildfire. But she’s always been theatrically challenged. That won’t necessarily stop her! But her family life is a tangle of mysteries and secrets, and nobody is telling her the whole truth. Before her brother died, he gave Cinnamon The Chronicles of the Great Wanderer—a tale of a Dahomean warrior woman and an alien from another dimension who perform at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. They are a story of magic or alien science, but the connection to Cinnamon's past is unmistakable. When an act of violence wounds her family, Cinnamon and her theatre squad determine to solve the mysteries and bring her worlds crashing together.
