Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Karma Yoga? Karma Yoga means the path of action without attachment. In other words, without getting entrapped in happiness-sorrow, continuing to perform karma with a sense of duty is Karma Yoga. Who is a Karma Yogi? A karma yogi is one who performs his right action as his ritual in the practical world. Karma yoga (also means Karma marga) is the best yoga described by the Lord Krishna. Karma is natural. Without karma, no one can live in this world. Without doing karma, no one can survive. Karma is the fundamental of our life. As long as we do our karmas, we can live in this world. Arjuna is a warrior whose behavior is ruled by impulses and basic instincts. He lacks the soul consciousness. He is religious, but not spiritualist. He is confused by contradictions. Lord Krishna enlightens him the way out of the confusions through Karma Yoga. He advises Arjuna to perform his duty detached from the thoughts of the consequences. Similarly, many of us confused in our lives before performing our duties while pondering about the outcomes. We forget our right karmas and wander in the middle of the crossroad of our lives. Consequently, we witness our failures and downfalls. And eventually, we grumble and blame our fates. Therefore, perform your karma without thinking about any result. Detach yourself from the consequences. Your foremost duty is to perform your karma (Dharma). But not to flee from your karma. Let your karma decides the outcome. Don’t try to meddle yourself into it. Always remember that only your karma leads you to the path of joy, happiness, success and peace and vice versa. Perform your Karma Yoga and become a Karma Yogi!

To a karma yogi, right work done well is a form of prayer. It is one of the paths in the spiritual practices of Hindus, others being Raja yoga, Jnana yoga (path of knowledge) and Bhakti yoga (path of loving devotion to a personal god). The three paths are not mutually exclusive in Hinduism, but the relative emphasis between Karma yoga, Jnana yoga and Bhakti yoga varies by the individual. Of the paths to spiritual liberation in Hinduism, karma yoga is the path of unselfish action. It teaches that a spiritual seeker should act according to dharma, without being attached to the fruits or personal consequences. Karma Yoga, states the Bhagavad Gita, purifies the mind. It leads one to consider dharma of work, and the work according to one's dharma, doing god's work and in that sense becoming and being "like unto god Krishna" in every moment of one's life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word Karma is derived from the Sanskrit Kri, to do; all action is Karma. Technically, this word also means the effects of actions. In connection with metaphysics, it sometimes means the effects, of which our past actions were the causes. But in Karma-Yoga we have simply to do with the word Karma as meaning work. The goal of mankind is knowledge; that is the one ideal placed before us by Eastern philosophy. Pleasure is not the goal of man, but knowledge. Pleasure and happiness come to an end. It is a mistake to suppose that pleasure is the goal; the cause of all the miseries we have in the world is that men foolishly think pleasure to be the ideal to strive for. After a time man finds that it is not happiness, but knowledge, towards which he is going, and that both pleasure and pain are great teachers, and that he learns as much from evil as from good. As pleasure and pain pass before his soul they leave upon it different pictures, and the result of these combined impressions is what is called man's "character." If you take the character of any man it really is but the aggregate of tendencies, the sum-total of the bent of his mind; you will find that misery and happiness are equal factors in the formation of that character. Good and evil have an equal share in moulding character, and in some instances misery is a greater teacher than happiness. In studying the great characters the world has produced, I dare say, in the vast majority of cases, it would be found that it was misery that taught more than happiness, it was poverty that taught more than wealth, it was blows that brought out their inner fire more than praise.

Book excerpt: The goal of life is really knowledge, of the reality of things. We are apt to think that it is pleasure, and seeking pleasure in sense-gratification, we meet with so many disappointments and sorrows that we sometimes almost despair and are led to believe that all life is a vain dream with no sure foundation anywhere. It is an endless chain of cause and effect in which we are involved, and from which only knowledge of how to act without producing reaction can ever free us. Karma Yoga is meant to teach us exactly this, to make clear to us first the causes of our bondage, and secondly the method of getting rid of the causes and to avoid the effects.

Book excerpt: The book must be of use to those who look for deeper ways of living and self-development or who are educationists, psychologists, and spiritual seekers. It will take the reader beyond the mental psychological insights provided by the method of transactional analysis for understanding and improving relationships, as devised by Eric Berne, to the spiritual realms wherein hide the true meaning and purpose of human life, works, relationships, and growth. The book will be of interest to those who wish to derive from the spiritual method provided by the Gita the meaning of yoga as applied to human life and its importance in achieving peace and joy amid the contradictions and conflicts faced by the seeker. The writer has studied and followed Sri Aurobindo’s extensive writings on Indian spiritual traditions, which make the foundation of his integral yoga, seeking a complete preparation of human life for enlarging and receiving a higher truth consciousness and a transformation of human life on earth, which must be mandatory for the flowering of such an aspiration. The book reflects a synthetic approach centered around the Gita and some subtle psychological observations about the traditional and current Indian societal patterns.

Book excerpt: “Karma Yoga” (The Yoga of action) is an English book of Swami Vivekananda, the book was first published in February 1896 from New York. Swami Vivekananda delivered a number of lectures in his rented rooms at 228 W 39th Street in New York City from December in 1895 and January, 1896. In 1895-1895, friends and supporters of Swami Vivekananda hired a professional stenographer Joseph Josiah Goodwin (who later became a follower of Vivekananda). Goodwin recorded some of the lectures of Vivekananda, and those lectures were published as the book Karma Yoga. It is said in the practice of Vedanta that we have a right to work, but don't have a right to the results of our actions. We have to work as hard as we can, give the work our best quality effort, then step back and let the results take care of themselves. Or in the practice of yoga, offer the results to God.Work purifies the soul. This concept is a bit different than many of us have been taught in the West, but the book offers an interesting approach that can save us from a lot of misery and bring us closer to God. In fact, you don't even need to believe in God to practice this yoga.

Book excerpt: The Bhagavad Gita is a comprehensive spiritual guide of Hinduism, which includes the essence of the Vedas, the Upanishads, and all the other systems of Hindu philosophy. It therefore incorporates infinite wisdom in 700 verses. The Gita has noble philosophy, art and literature. The subject matter is in the form of a dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna. The thoughts expressed by Krishna are quite deep. Mahatma Gandhi said that when disappointment stares me in the face and all alone I see not one ray of light, I go to the Bhagavad Gita. I read a verse here and there, I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming tragedies - and my life has been full of tragedies - and if they have left no visible, no indelible scar on me, I owe it all to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita.

Book excerpt: For centuries, readers have turned to the Bhagavad Gita for inspiration and guidance as they chart their own spiritual paths. As profound and powerful as this classic text has been for generations of seekers, integrating its lessons into the ordinary patterns of our lives can ultimately seem beyond our reach. Now, in a fascinating series of reflections, anecdotes, stories, and exercises, Ram Dass gives us a unique and accessible road map for experiencing divinity in everyday life. In the engaging, conversational style that has made his teachings so popular for decades, Ram Dass traces our journey of consciousness as it is reflected in one of Hinduism’s most sacred texts. The Gita teaches a system of yogas, or “paths for coming to union with God.” In Paths to God, Ram Dass brings the heart of that system to light for a Western audience and translates the Gita’s principles into the manual for living the yoga of contemporary life. While being a guide to the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, Paths to God is also a template for expanding our definition of ourselves and allowing us to appreciate a new level of meaning in our lives.
