Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Einstein once famously proclaimed: "Make things as simple as you possibly can, but no simpler." This book is an attempt to do precisely that, and in the process to take lay readers on a voyage all the way from the Big Bang to the human species. In doing so, it avoids both the simplistic neo-Darwinian idea that everything happens by pure chance and the unscientific notion that if we want to know how our universe came to be, all we have to do is read our bibles. Suarez presents here a rigorous and also entertaining description of life from the moment (approximately 13.7 billion years ago) when total darkness gave way to blinding light, and from there all the way to the present. It tackles the mystery of biogenesis - that is to say the moment when chemicals, which did not seem predisposed to arrange themselves into something more complex, somehow overcame the tendency to break apart and instead combined into something as harmonious and perfectly synchronized as a living cell. In between the singularity that marked the beginning of all matter and the wondrous complexity of the human mind, the author tackles the inflationary moment, Dark Energy, the Second Law, biogenesis and the so-called "missing link," using analogies, stories, and quotes from history's great thinkers. The book does not solve the four mysteries of natural history, but it provides the reader insights by which to weigh to what extent modern science has solved them and to what extent they remain scientific voids that beg for a metaphysical explanation. At the very end, a theory is put forth that connects two of science's four great mysteries. If true, the philosophical implications are so startling that it makes reading the book worthwhile just to ponder the possibility that Suarez may be right about that connection.

Book excerpt: When a disturbed young Russian man came to Freud for treatment, the analysis of his childhood neuroses—most notably a dream about wolves outside his bedroom window—eventually revealed a deep-seated trauma. It took more than four years to treat him, and "The Wolfman" became one of Freud's most famous cases. This volume also contains the case histories of a boy's fear of horses and the Ratman's violent fear of rats, as well as the essay "Some Character Types," in which Freud draws on the work of Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Nietzsche to demonstrate different kinds of resistance to therapy. Above all, the case histories show us Freud at work, in his own words.

Book excerpt: "The Body Institute is a roller coaster of a book. This fast-paced sci-fi thriller grapples with issues of identity and scientific technology run amok in a society only two steps ahead of our own, while scrutinizing an all-encompassing obsession with being thin which is very much part of the here and now. Readers will love the twists and turns and be prompted to question their own relationship to technology, body image and the ever-growing power of mega-corporations." - C.K. Kelly Martin, author of Yesterday and Tomorrow Meet Morgan Dey, one of the top teen Reducers at The Body Institute. Thanks to cutting-edge technology, Morgan can temporarily take over another girl's body, get her in shape, and then return to her own body-leaving her client slimmer, more toned, and feeling great. Only there are a few catches... For one, Morgan won't remember what happens in her "Loaner" body. Once she's done, she won't recall walks with her new friend Matt, conversations with the super-cute Reducer she's been text-flirting with, or the uneasy feeling she has that the director of The Body Institute is hiding something. Still, it's all worth it in the name of science. Until the glitches start... Suddenly, residual memories from her Loaner are cropping up in Morgan's mind. She's feeling less like herself and more like someone else. And when protests from an anti-Body Institute organization threaten her safety, she'll have to decide if being a Reducer is worth the cost of her body and soul...

Book excerpt: Selected as a Mission Specialist in 1978 in the first group of shuttle astronauts, Mike Mullane completed three missions and logged 356 hours aboard the Discovery and Atlantis shuttles. It was a dream come true. As a boy, Mullane could only read about space travel in science fiction, but the launch of Sputnik changed all that. Space flight became a possible dream and Mike Mullane set out to make it come true. In this absorbing memoir, Mullane gives the first-ever look into the often hilarious, sometime volatile dynamics of space shuttle astronauts - a class that included Vietnam War veterans, feminists, and propeller-headed scientists. With unprecedented candour, Mullane describes the chilling fear and unparalleled joy of space flight. As his career centred around the Challenger disaster, Mullane also recounts the heartache of burying his friends and colleagues. And he pulls no punches as he reveals the ins and outs of NASA, frank in his criticisms of the agency. A blast from start to finish, Riding Rockets is a straight-from-the-gut account of what it means to be an astronaut, just in time for this latest generation of stargazers.

Book excerpt: A grumpy man who detests ice cream meets a cheerful woman who owns an ice cream shop. I hate ice cream. Ever since my fiancée left me at the altar and skewered me in her bestseller “Embrace Your Inner Ice Cream Sandwich: Finding the Positive You in a World of Negativity,” I haven’t been able to stomach the stuff. Unfortunately, my five-year-old niece is a budding foodie and her favorite place in the world is Ginger Scoops, a cutesy Asian ice cream shop. Since I’ve been looking after my niece a lot lately, I’ve spent too much time there, sipping black coffee, refusing to eat ice cream, and trying not to look at the owner, Chloe Jenkins. Chloe is obnoxiously cheerful, and I can’t stand her. Naturally, I end up kissing her. But I’ve sworn off women after the fiasco with my ex-fiancée, and I’m convinced I’m no good at relationships. Still, with Chloe I’m tempted to do the impossible: give love and ice cream another chance… * * * Jackie Lau writes soft and steamy romances with Asian characters and lots of food. He traced the lay of her hand, threading with his forefinger a translucent line of blue vein against impossibly white skin, until it intersected a plastic tube now continuous with flesh. "Liza," he whispered, bent low to her ear. "Liza. I'm so sorry. Not for now. Not only for now, but for all of the years that brought us here. It's so easy to let the sorrow trap you. It's the easy way out, to mourn forever. It takes courage to continue " When Dr. Bing Denton's daughter, Liza, becomes involved in a seedy underworld, it threatens the existence of his already fragile family. Faced with estrangement from his wife, Rebecca, and the haunting of a distant tragedy, he must grapple with the loss of his surgeon's gift and a frightening descent into madness. As he struggles to comprehend the soulless workings of the world, he finds himself increasingly involved with a former patient. Can Bing save himself and his family, or is it too late?

Book excerpt: David will never forget the day he met Theo—as much as he might want to. On a mission to right a wrong done to his sister as a child, David walks into LAO Schulz, a famous toy Mecca in the heart of New York City. What he sees that day in the stuffed-animal aisle challenges everything he understands about reality. As David turns the corner, he hears the sound of slapping. He investigates and sees a rather large stuffed bear viciously smacking a toddler around. As quickly as it starts, the attack ends. The bear regards David with cold, plastic eyes, climbs up on its shelf, and quickly settles into the lifeless pose one would expect from stuffed bears. Not only is this stuffed bear alive, David realizes, he’s evil. David decides he must own this bear, and with that, their bizarre relationship begins. His name is Theo, and he’s got a whopper of a story to further challenge David’s belief system. Cruelly put to death as a real bear cub, Theo is given a second chance at life—as a stuffed animal. Theo is forced to become a killer as a rising star among the ranks of a secret brotherhood of gangster teddy bears. Betrayed, Theo is left to rot in the slammer. Theo and his friends conspire to escape. With the loyal Houdini by his side, the gang breathes free air again, but karma, as they say, is no friend to an ex-con.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My parents always told me I was Mexican. I was Mexican because they were Mexican. This was sometimes modified to “Mexican American,” since I was born in California, and thus automatically a U.S. citizen. But, my parents said, this, too, was once part of Mexico. My father would say this with a sweeping gesture, taking in the smog, the beautiful mountains, the cars and houses and fast-food franchises. When he made that gesture, all was cleared away in my mind’s eye to leave the hazy impression of a better place. We were here when the white people came, the Spaniards, then the Americans. And we will be here when they go away, he would say, and it will be part of Mexico again. Thus begins a lyrical and entirely absorbing collection of personal essays by esteemed Chicana writer and gifted storyteller Kathleen Alcalá. Loosely linked by an exploration of the many meanings of “family,” these essays move in a broad arc from the stories and experiences of those close to her to those whom she wonders about, like Andrea Yates, a mother who drowned her children. In the process of digging and sifting, she is frequently surprised by what she unearths. Her family, she discovers, were Jewish refugees from the Spanish Inquisition who took on the trappings of Catholicism in order to survive. Although the essays are in many ways personal, they are also universal. When she examines her family history, she is encouraging us to inspect our own families, too. When she investigates a family secret, she is supporting our own search for meaning. And when she writes that being separated from our indigenous culture is “a form of illiteracy,” we know exactly what she means. After reading these essays, we find that we have discovered not only why Kathleen Alcalá is a writer but also why we appreciate her so much. She helps us to find ourselves.
