Book excerpt: Excerpt from Giovanni Dupre The book is by no means intended as a substitute for the Biograficlzz' of Dupre, now made accessible to English and American readers in the elegant translation of Madame Peruzzi. Indeed, I should feel well repaid for this humble tribute to the memory of an eminent Italian sculptor, at once great in his art, fascinating and instructive as a writer, and simple and pure in character, if it might lead to the more general circulation and appreciation of his own work; a Book which stands alone as the autobiography of a modern Italian artist, and may be said to have formed an era in the art literature of Italy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on Art and Autobiographical Memoirs of Giovanni Dupre In respect of style, this autobiography resembles more the spoken than the written literary language of Italy. It is free, natural, unstudied, and often careless. But its very carelessness has a charm. Dupre was not a scholar nor a literary man. He was not bound by the rigid forms of what is called in Italy 10 stile, which but too often is the enemy of natural utterance. Undoubtedly this book needs compression; but no exactness of style and form could compensate for the absence of that unstudied natural ease and familiarity which are among its greatest charms. The writer, fortunately for the reader, is as unconscious of elaborated style as Monsieur jourdain was that he was talking prose. The character of Dupre's writing has been admir ably caught and reproduced by Madame Peruzzi, in the translation to which these few words may serve as preface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on Art and Autobiographical Memoirs of Giovanni Duprè This book contains the record of the life and thoughts upon Art of Giovanni Dupre, one of the most eminent sculptors of the present century in Italy. It was written by him from time to time, during the latter years of his life, in the intervals of work in his studio, and given to the public about three years before his death. Those three years, of which it contains no account, were assiduously devoted to his art. Every day had its work, and it was done faithfully and joyously even to the last. "Nulla dies sine linea." Within these years, among other works of less importance, he successively executed a basso-relievo of the Baptism of our Lord, a portrait statue of Pius IX. for the Cathedral of Piacenza, one of Victor Emmanuel for the public square at Trapani, one of Raimondo Lullo for a chapel in the island of Majorca, and one of St Francis of Assisi which now adorns the front of the Cathedral at Assisi. This was the last statue which he ever made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Ollive Mabbott had, for nearly forty years, planned and prepared for a comprehensive and authoritative collection of all of the writings of Edgar Allan Poe. Sadly, he lived only to see the volume of Poems make it into print. His widow, Maureen Cobb Mabbott, worked with several of TOM's assistants to complete volumes II and III, embracing the Tales and Sketches, an effort that occupied another decade of care and dedication. The material for subsequent volumes was not nearly as far along as it had been for the first three, meaning that even more effort would be needed to proceed with the edition. The responsibility fell to Burton R. Pollin, who had been personally selected by TOM. Harvard University Press declined to continue as the publisher. Instead, the publication was undertaken initially by Twayne, and then by Gordian Press (which also reprinted the first volume issued by Twayne, with a few minor corrections). Gordian produced single runs of each volume, comprising 500 copies each. The collected edition still remained incomplete when Pollin died in 2009. Because it was specifically designed to complement the Mabbott volumes on the poetry and works of fiction, there is no duplication of contents. Treating the combination of volumes as a single series, therefore, the set is often referred to collectively as the Mabbott/Pollin edition.
