The eighth chapter turns upon his philosophy of religion, about which there has been much controversy while the last attempts to bring him into relation and comparison with some of the philosophers who succeeded him. I subjoin a list of works and articles which are of importance for the study of Bruno. Throughout I have referred for Bruno's works to the recent Italian edition of the Latin works, issued at the public expense, 1879 to 1891 (three volumes in eight parts, with introductions, and to Lagarde's edition of the Italian works - Gotha, 1888. Of the latter there are two volumes, but the paging is continuous from one to the other, page 401 beginning the second volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Giordano Bruno, His Life, Thought, and Martyrdom The life of Bruno has been written in English more than once, and he has had many excellent commentators. No one can now write about him without availing himself very largely of the solid and scholarly work done by Tocco, Fiorentino, Berti, Brunnhofer, Mclntyre and others. The apology for the appearance of the present work must be that some facts, unrecorded in England, have come to light of late years, and also that a few usual, almost unavoidable inaccuracies require correction. Moreover, I have tried to follow the development of Bruno's thoughts in the order in which he declared them; and, on one or two points, I find myself compelled to differ from the conclusions of this or the other commentator. Most of Bruno's works have been published in the editions of Wagner, Lagarde, and Gfrorer, well edited for their day. Different libraries contain different editions, when any are to be found in them. Even the British Museum, although it possesses a fine collection of rare, original impressions, does not contain all the volumes of the complete State Edition, and lacks that one which contains the works which were discovered in manuscript. To give the paging of any particular edition might therefore prove less convenient than the plan I have adopted of giving those indications for reference which are supplied by the subdivisions of the works themselves, except in the case of the published manuscripts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Giordano Bruno, the Nolan The influence of this courageous thinker on the golden age of English literature has hitherto almost escaped notice. As, however, the existence of invisible celestial bodies is foretold by the perturbations of visible stars, it is interesting to show how, by the shining track of thought, Bacon, Sidney, Marlowe, and perhaps even Shakespeare, are related to an obscure foreign visitor. These resem blances can be traced by a moderately careful study of the Italian works, notably the dialogues Della Cause. Ardent champion Of freedom Of thought in an age hide-bound by tradition, impetuous, brilliant, enthusiastic, and daring, he has been well described as a comet that flashed across Europe. This blazing spark Of a fiery life is the expression used by another writer while a third has declared that the red glow Of Bruno's funeral pyre was the rosy dawn Of modern thought in Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Giordano Bruno, Vol. 1 of 2: A Tale of the Sixteenth Century In dealing with Bruno's sojourn in England, there was, of course, a certain temptation - especially to an English writer - to make him and our great poet, Shakespeare, personally acquainted with each other. There would be required, at the outside, an anachronism of such a very few. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: If you are intrigued by the notion of a forgotten philosopher then look no further than "Giordano Bruno: In Memoriam of the 17th February 1600 ," a eulogy for an original thinker and heretic, Giordano Bruno. Bruno was a Dominican priest who journeyed from faith in Catholocisim to faith in science during his short life, he was eventually tried by the Roman Inquisition and burned at the stake for his beliefs. This book is a brief introduction to his life and ideas. It is philosopher Alois Riehl who writes in remembrance of Bruno's life. Bruno was highly educated and had a special talent for philosophy; His writing on the nature of memory, De Umbras Idearum - The Shadows of Ideas, brought him to the attention of the highest Catholic authorities, including the Pope. Bruno's books on memory posited that ideas are only the shadows of truth, which was a radical idea at the time. Although Catholic authorities were impressed by Bruno, that did not stop him from continuing to follow his own philosophical wanderings, even when they led him far from his vocation as a priest. He became a follower of Copernicus and soon started arguing that the sun was just one of several life-supporting stars, even envisioning other worlds full of alien beings. Soon Bruno was denying the existence of the Holy Trinity and Transubstantiation, which brought him within the purview of the Roman Inquisition. Bruno was forced to flee his home in Italy, ending up in the United Kingdom. As Riehl explains, Bruno's dedication to telling his own truths brought him into conflict wherever he went. His outspokenness caused a scene at Oxford University and even caused a row with the Archbishop of Canterbury. However, Bruno continued to publish his theories, eventually publishing more than 30 books on cosmology, mathematics and theology. The Roman Inquisition finally tried Bruno for denying key aspects of the Catholic faith as well as for supporting controversial cosmological theories. He was burned at the stake and is still seen as a martyr by some scientists and philosophers. Riehl discusses Bruno's theories, but only in brief, explaining that the reader should seek out Bruno's books if he or she wants to know more. Instead, by focusing on biographical details, Riehl gives readers insight into Bruno's character and the challenges that freethinkers faced during the 16th Century. "Giordano Bruno: In Memoriam of the 17th February 1600 " is an easy read that will leave you wanting to know more about this intriguing pioneer. Book excerpt: The Renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno was a notable supporter of the new science that arose during his lifetime; his role in its development has been debated ever since the early seventeenth century. Hilary Gatti here reevaluates Bruno's contribution to the scientific revolution, in the process challenging the view that now dominates Bruno criticism among English-language scholars. This argument, associated with the work of Frances Yates, holds that early modern science was impregnated with and shaped by Hermetic and occult traditions, and has led scholars to view Bruno primarily as a magus. Gatti reinstates Bruno as a scientific thinker and occasional investigator of considerable significance and power whose work participates in the excitement aroused by the new science and its methods at the end of the sixteenth century. Her original research emphasizes the importance of Bruno's links to the magnetic philosophers, from Ficino to Gilbert; Bruno's reading and extension of Copernicus's work on the motions of the earth; the importance of Bruno's mathematics; and his work on the art of memory seen as a picture logic, which she examines in the light of the crises of visualization in present-day science. She concludes by emphasizing Bruno's ethics of scientific discovery.
