Download or read book Gifts written by Richard Hyland and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-05 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gifts: A Study in Comparative Law is the first broad-based study of the law governing the giving and revocation of gifts ever attempted. Gift-giving is everywhere governed by social and customary norms before it encounters the law and the giving of gifts takes place largely outside of the marketplace. As a result of these two characteristics, the law of gifts provides an optimal lens through which to examine how different legal systems engage with social practice. The law of gifts is well-developed both in the civil and the common laws. Richard Hyland's study provides an excellent view of the ways in which different civil and common law jurisdictions confront common issues. The legal systems discussed include principally, in the common law, those of Great Britain, the United States, and India, and, in the civil law, the private law systems of Belgium and France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Professor Hyland also serves a critique of the dominant method in the field, which is a form of functionalism based on what is called the praesumptio similitudinis, namely the axiom that, once legal doctrine is stripped away, developed legal systems tend to reach similar practical results. His study demonstrates, to the contrary, that legal systems actually differ, not only in their approach and conceptual structure, but just as much in the results.

Book Synopsis Miraculous Gifts by : Thomas R. Edgar
Download or read book Miraculous Gifts written by Thomas R. Edgar and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-07-25 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miraculous Gifts is a discussion of spiritual gifts in light of the basic differences between cessationalism and Pentecostalism. Many studies of this issue are written from a primarily theological perspective, and while theological arguments are valid, charismatics assert that this controversy concerns ÒbiblicalÓ gifts and miracles, and is therefore a matter of 'faith' to believe their claims, with theological arguments proving unsatisfactory. The fundamental question is, ÒIs this what the Bible discusses; is it biblical?Ó Miraculous Gifts attempts to answer that question by providing a biblically-based analysis of spiritual gifts in view of the charismatic controversy.
Download or read book Neon Pilgrim written by Lisa Dempster and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a culture-shocked exchange year in Japan, fifteen-year-old Lisa Dempster’s imagination is ignited by the story of the henro michi, an arduous 1200 kilometre Buddhist pilgrimage through the mountains of Japan. Perfectly suiting the romantic view of herself as a dusty, travel-worn explorer (well, one day), she promises to return to Japan and walk the henro michi, one way or another, as soon as humanely possible. Fast-forward thirteen years, and Lisa’s life is vastly different to what she pictured it would be. Severely depressed, socially withdrawn, overweight, on the dole and living with her mum, she is 28 and miserable. And then, completely by chance, the henro michi comes back into her life, through a book at her local library. It’s a sign. She decides then and there to go back to Japan almost immediately: to walk the henro michi, and walk herself back to health. Brushing aside the barriers that other people might find daunting – the 1200km of mountainous terrain, the sweltering Japanese summer, the fact she has no money and has never done a multi-day hike before – Lisa is determined to walk the pilgrimage, or die trying.

Download or read book The Gift written by Aafke E. Komter and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What moves us to give gifts to other people? The Gift brings together perspectives on gift exchange and reciprocity from different social scientific disciplines. The first part of this book contains anthropological and sociological 'classics' on gift giving and reciprocity. In the second part the focus is on social psychological theories, and on empirical research on gift giving in Western society. Finally, the main concepts underlying gift exchange - reciprocity, self-interest and altruism - are discussed. Here, the focus is on fundamental assumptions about human nature. Altruism and self-interest turn out to be much more interwoven than we are inclined to think.

Book Synopsis Spiritual Gifts by : Jennifer Anne Cox
Download or read book Spiritual Gifts written by Jennifer Anne Cox and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual Gifts: A Christ-Centered Perspective is just that, centered on Christ. It provides a new perspective on spiritual gifts, seeing the person and work of Christ as the foundation for the gifts of the Spirit. The coming of Jesus into the world opens the way for the whole people of God to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit and to share in God’s work in the world. The book takes a broad New Testament approach to exploring the gifts, carefully examining the meaning of the gifts by considering the Gospels, Acts, and the epistles. The focus is on seeing each gift as an extension of what Jesus did in his ministry. The gifts of the Spirit equip the church to carry on Jesus’ work. Every gift is a means of proclaiming the gospel. God gives his gifts with two purposes in mind: to build the church by bringing people to Christ, and to build up the church by maturing each believer. Consequently, Pentecostals, Charismatics, and conservative Christians alike must embrace spiritual gifts because God desires to transform the world through his equipped people.

Book Synopsis The Dynamics of Spiritual Gifts by : William J. McRae
Download or read book The Dynamics of Spiritual Gifts written by William J. McRae and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our churches have hardly begun to tap the potential in the pews. Many Christians have settled for far less than God intends because many have never discovered or developed their spiritual gifts. "An understanding of Ephesians 4:11-16 has changed my entire perspective on my Christian service. I discovered that one of my highest priorities must be equipping the saints for their work of service. Pursuing this objective I have made a second discovery. Exceedingly few believers are conscious of possessing a spiritual gift, and even fewer know what their gift is or what to do about it. My third discovery is that few things can be of greater assistance to a Christian in setting his own priorities or discerning the will of God than knowing his own gift. These are the discoveries that have motivated me to prepare this book," says the author. Included are chapters on: - The Definition of a Gift - The Distribution of the Gifts - A Description of the Gifts - The Distinctions Within the Gifts.
