Book Synopsis When the Bad Bleeds by : Imke Pannen
Download or read book When the Bad Bleeds written by Imke Pannen and published by V&R unipress GmbH. This book was released on 2010 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mantic elements are manifold in the English drama of the Renaissance period: they are supernatural manifestations and have a prophetic, future-determining function within the dramatic plot, which can be difficult to discern. Addressing contemporaries of Shakespeare, this study interprets a representative number of revenge tragedies, among them The Spanish Tragedy, The White Devil, and The Revenger's Tragedy, to draw general conclusions about the use of mantic elements in this genre. The analysis of the cultural context and the functionalisation of mantic elements in revenge tragedy of the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline era show their essential function in the construction of the plot. Mantic elements create and stimulate audience expectations. They are not only rhetoric decorum, but structural elements, and convey knowledge about the genre, the fate of which is determined by retaliation. An interpretation of revenge tragedy is only possible if mantic providentialism is taken into account.

Spanning centuries and continents, the stories in this collection amount to a tour de force of literary worldbuilding. By turns sad, strange and darkly comic, The Ghost Who Bled reveals a master storyteller of incredible range. “Witty, intelligent, crunchily written, Norminton’s collection is pure reading pleasure.” Neel Mukherjee (Booker-shortlisted author of The Lives of Others) '"All the doors of the imagination are open to Gregory Norminton, the author of micro-fictions and exuberantly long novels; this collection roves magnificently from one side of the world to the other, bringing together people and their predicaments as only its author can. Read it and be transported, too." Michael Caines (The TLS) "Gregory Norminton’s tautly written, mordant short stories make the reader sit up and think. Startlingly original imagery and that rare thing, moral and political bite." Maggie Gee

Book Synopsis Ghost Culture by : John G. Sabol Jr.
Download or read book Ghost Culture written by John G. Sabol Jr. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-06-21 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of a series of ethnographic studies in cultural hauntings and ghostly landscapes. The first book, Ghost Excavator: Unearthing the Drama in the Mine Fields, was a personal excavation of the haunted Mahanoy Area. In this second book, a theory of cultural hauntings is presented that serves as a framework for investigative fieldwork. Specific techniques are introduced as a means of scientific practices to evaluate the data observed and recorded at haunted locations. This book is meant to form the infrastructure of a developing ghost science, one built from the "bottom-up". The integrated symmetrical approach of theory and scientific practice that is outlined here is a beginning point for the continuing evolution of the ghost science of the future. This search and analysis of haunting phenomena is seen as an approach that can be participated in by the many and who, through their continuing efforts, will help fill-in the "blanks" of a "ghost map" of what Shakespeare has called the "undiscover'd country".
