Nicht umsonst hören Spielfilme und Romane dort auf, wo die schlimme Wahrheit beginnt. Viele Menschen befürworten körperliche Bestrafung bei Kindern, frei nach dem Motto: ein Klaps hat noch keinem geschadet (Hirsch 1981, S. 169). Die physische Bestrafung von Kindern ist gesellschaftlich geduldet, das Schlagen von erwachsenen Frauen ist es nicht. Obwohl zwischen diesen beiden Aspekten kein Unterschied besteht. In beiden Fällen werden Menschen verletzt. Meist beginnt die Gewalt gegen Frauen in der Familie als emotionale Überreaktion, eine Ohrfeige im Streit und danach die Beteuerung dass das niemals wieder geschehen werde. Allerdings wird kein Mensch gewalttätig geboren. Gewalt ist ein erlerntes Verhalten. Eltern und die Familie sind sowohl die wichtigsten Vorbilder als auch die primären Sozialisationsinstanzen. Von ihnen sollen Kinder soziales Verhalten und Normen lernen, wobei zwischen gesellschaftlichen akzeptierten Normen und gelebten Normen ein Unterschied besteht (Hirsch 1981, S. 180). Familie hat die Funktion, Kinder zur Selbstsicherheit und Gewissensbildung zu erziehen. Ebenfalls sollen Kinder Konfliktfähigkeit, Empathie und Frustrationstoleranz, sowie Rolledistanz lernen (Hirsch 1981, S. 60/61). Diese Arbeit setzt sich mit den Folgen auseinander, wenn Menschen diese Eigenschaften nicht gelernt haben.
