Book excerpt: Obstacle course racing: good crazy masochistic fun A collection of dramatic first-person stories about the experience of competing in obstacle course races. In the style of First Marathons and Becoming an Ironman, these stories give the personal experience of participating in the sport, either for the first time, or as a lifestyle. Plus many tips for better performance. OCR is the new series of events for people who have become bored with chasing down mile after mile in a marathon, or doing a triathlon, or, say, completing Army boot camp. OCR involves a constantly changing combination of such challenges as: crawling under barbed wire, jumping over fire, spear throwing, wall scaling, enduring electric shocks, plunging into ice-water baths—all while running a course that may be anywhere from 3 to 10 miles, or more. Participation numbers for OCR are booming. Just as marathons and 10Ks saw a huge national running boom, we are now at the dawn of the OCR Boom. Get Muddy will appeal to everyone from the mildly curious to the wildly committed. So go get muddy! “Doing an OCR will make you feel alive again. We are naturally wired to run, sweat, and struggle a bit. Get outside and get the juices flowing. You’ll feel great!” —Joe DeSena, founder, Spartan Race Series “OCR lets you play like a kid and experience life unedited.” —Margaret Schlachter, author of Obstacle Race Training: How to Beat Any Course, Compete Like a Champion and Change Your Life and the first professional female obstacle course racer

Book excerpt: “By turns heartfelt, bitingly funny, and emotionally devastating, Muddy People is not your average coming-of-age tale. I loved this memoir of a young Egyptian-Australian girl growing up Muslim. It's a clear-eyed, fierce debut; every word rings true.”—Nadine Jolie Courtney, author of All-American Muslim Girl A quick, clever debut that is “like the best kind of cake: warm, sweet, a bit nutty—and made with so much love.”—Alice Pung, author of Unpolished Gem Sara is growing up in a family with a lot of rules. Her mother tells her she’s not allowed to wear a bikini, her father tells her she’s not allowed to drink alcohol, and her grandmother tells her to never trust a man with her money. After leaving Egypt when Sara was only six years old, her family slowly learns how to navigate the social dynamics of their new home. Sara feels out of place in her new school. Her father refuses to buy his coworkers a ginger beer, thinking it contains alcohol. Her mother refuses to wear a hijab, even if it would help them connect with other local Muslims. And Sara learns what it feels like to have a crush on a boy, that some classmates are better friends than others, and that her parents are loving, but flawed people who don't always know what's best for her, despite being her strongest defenders. For readers of Patricia Lockwood’s Priestdaddy and Michelle Zauner’s Crying in H Mart, this heartwarming book about family and identity introduces a compelling new voice, with a coming-of-age story that will speak to everyone who’s ever struggled to figure out where they belong.

Book excerpt: The follow-up book to the bestselling 'One Hundred Ways For A Dog To Train Its Human', this is the guide for all dogs who like to take a humorous look at the great outdoors! Excerpts from the book: On those wet, windy, wintry walks when you're as dirty and as slimy as you can get, don't slip and slide frenetically as you try to clamber over a stile. Let your human sweep you up into their arms and gently carry you over, whilst you watch the remnants of that cow pat transfer from your coat to theirs. Responsible humans like to know where you are at all times. Be considerate and tell them where you've been too, by leaving a trail of muddy footprints across all floor surfaces. It's only since humans have domesticated dogs, that you've had to be clean. Go ancestral. Get dirty!

Book excerpt: "When Brigham Young summons young Morgan Davis to his office and calls him to join other missionaries in settling the Muddy River Valley (what is now Nevada), Morgan can't imagine what lies in store. He has just two weeks to find a wife and gather enough belongings to help start a settlement. As Morgan and his new bride, Angeline, travel the long trail south in a covered wagon, they fall in love and connect with the other Saints. But the desert location on the Muddy River soon becomes a physical and emotional test for all of them. Together they face difficult requests from Church leaders, multiple failed attempts to settle, deaths of loved ones, and then perhaps the ultimate challenge, polygamy. What do stalwart members do when faced with conflicting feelings between what their hearts tell them and the hard instructions from Salt Lake City? Morgan and Angeline are about to find out."--Publisher.

Book excerpt: No child can walk through a puddle of mud without a gigantic smile, and while the stuff might be the spring-time bane of grownups, children just love mud. Muddy Boots targets kids and families who value outdoor exploration and grandparents who long for their grandchildren to have the same unfettered time in nature as they did. The book features a wide range of hands-on activities for kids, including mud play, forts, animal tracking and forest wisdom, foraging, insects and worms, bird watching and bird feeding, and many small things for kids to make. Although not primarily about mud, the activities do encourage all hands to get dirty as they explore the world around them.

Book excerpt: Heather McHugh’s first book in a decade, Muddy Matterhorn, reclaims the mix of high and low that is her sensibility’s signature, in matters practical and philosophical, semantic and stylistic, mortal and transitory, amorous and political, hilarious and heartbreaking. With fierce attacks on technology and social structures, McHugh finds a way to enjoy and empathize with humanity on her own terms. Ever the outsider, McHugh combines a strong sense of self with a determination to love people and the worlds they build without losing her biting criticism or witty rejection of societal norms and expectations. She is both pragmatic and theorizing, esoteric and identifiable. The joy and anger in these poems join to form an empowered and impassioned declaration of self in a chaotic time.

Book excerpt: Muddy Waters is an auto-biography of my experience of twelve years spent with a home-grown New Zealand cult who established themselves in North Canterbury first in a Christchurch suburb and then relocating to a farm in Waipara. I joined immediately following a spiritual awakening when I engaged Air Force friends who were already in the cult without knowing its true nature. Other Air Force personnel did similar. I share this journey beginning with my background prior to my entry into the group. I explain my journey while in this particular cult from an insider’s point of view which has not been shared before in a way that outsiders can comprehend. The group went through a number of transitions hinging around them understanding their leader to be Messiah. I share some of the life lived, the style of worship, the rationales around them justifying at times, large scale theft and also petty theft with an accompanying idea it was ok to lie to outsiders. We achieved notoriety after sizeable NZ police raids in 1977 and subsequent raids assisted by members of the defence force on households around New Zealand located near RNZAF bases after the discovery of a large cache of firearms and explosives. The group was again raided in 1987 on similar grounds and other firearms confiscated. My journey was one of a growing self-awareness and a distinct development of conscience as I met and worked through each of the challenges I engaged on exiting. Prior to leaving my experience was marked with conflict and confrontation with the leadership which grew around the illusions presenting him as the secret Messiah. Anecdotes include their lifestyle; the routines; the rituals and their exorcisms; I was excommunicated following a direct doctrinal challenge I made to the leader and from which he then manipulated the group by playing victim in telling the followers I wanted to see him dead. This caused a severe and vitriolic reaction ensuring I could in no way return even if I wished to. I was shunned. It has taken me 30 years before I got to the point of being able to write my story. Today I am a retired Presbyterian minister in New Zealand and have recently retired after 25 years of pastoral ministry ranging from rural work to suburban and inner city work.

Book excerpt: “I am stuck in the mud and need help to get out.” Represent God as holding us up through life problems and moving us along on our journey through life. The Lord while I was in the mud was with me and he carried my burdens, pain, past hurts, and disappointments upon Himself. Meaning the weight, I felt internally is from the devastating blows of life experiences. The whole point of being on a journey and getting struck in the mud is learning to love yourself with your imperfections because God does Love us.
