This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the proceedings of the 32nd International Conference on Transplantation and Clinical Immunology, held in Lyon, France, on May 25-26, 2000, addresses novel issues in terms of changing indications for transplantation in the management of organ failure, whether humans will remain the only source for organ procurement, prospects for engineering in organ replacement, and whether transplantation will remain the most appropriate approach to organ failure. Some promising treatments are approached, such as enzymic and biochemical replacement, gene therapy, tolerance induction, stem cell transplantation, and xenotransplantation. In addition to the constant improvement in conservative management of organ failure in general, ongoing research in selected fields is reported in the proceedings, such as liver transplantation vs artificial liver, novel dialysis strategies vs evolving immunosuppression in kidney transplantation, islets transplantation and external implantable insulin pumps vs pancreas transplantation in diabetic patients, circulatory assistance and intramyocardial myoblast injection vs heart transplantation. Pivotal experience in selected emerging transplantations is included, that is, small bowel, limb, skin and neuronal transplantation. Such fascinating perspectives raise medical, economical, and ethical problems which are discussed in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery has traditionally been a difficult and specialised topic in undergraduate medicine and for junior doctors. Many textbooks are too detailed for undergraduate use, or lack self assessment questions to help those wishing to underpin their learning. This concise and easy-to-read self-assessment guide aims to clarify the topic, and find and fill gaps in understanding. The multiple choice questions (MCQs) contained cover all levels of knowledge and the learning objectives of most of the UK medical school curricula, aiding preparation for end of unit, module and final exams for ENT. This book will be a valuable companion for clinics and teaching sessions and an indispensable revision primer for graduate entry medical curricula. 'An excellent means of preparation for medical undergraduate examinations as gaps in core knowledge are quickly revealed. Further, this text is a good guide for students to identify those subject areas requiring more focused study, especially when time is short.' - From the Foreword by Samir Soma

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late nineteenth-century Mexico was a country rife with health problems. In 1876, one out of every nineteen people died prematurely in Mexico City, a staggeringly high rate when compared to other major Western world capitals at the time, which saw more modest premature death rates of one out of fifty-two (London), one out of forty-four (Paris), and one out of thirty-five (Madrid). It is not an exaggeration to maintain that each day dozens of bodies could be found scattered throughout the streets of Mexico City, making the capital city one of the most unsanitary places in the Western Hemisphere. In light of such startling scenes, in Death Is All around Us Jonathan M. Weber examines how Mexican state officials, including President Porfirio Díaz, tried to resolve the public health dilemmas facing the city. By reducing the high mortality rate, state officials believed that Mexico City would be seen as a more modern and viable capital in North America. To this end the government used new forms of technology and scientific knowledge to deal with the thousands of unidentified and unburied corpses found in hospital morgues and cemeteries and on the streets. Tackling the central question of how the government used the latest technological and scientific advancements to persuade citizens and foreigners alike that the capital city—and thus Mexico as a whole—was capable of resolving the hygienic issues plaguing the city, Weber explores how the state’s attempts to exert control over procedures of death and burial became a powerful weapon for controlling the behavior of its citizens.

This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doody Rating: 3 stars: Over the last decade impressive improvements in computer and ultrasound technology have promoted a wide use of ultrasound in clinical practice. With the advent of color and power Doppler ultrasound, and more recently three- (3D) and four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound, research expansion in the field of human reproduction, obstetrics and gynecologic oncology has occurred. Ultrasound has simplified guided techniques such as oocyte collection and breast biopsy, but has also become an important technique in the assessment of the follicular growth and endometrial development, as well as in evaluation of the uterine and ovarian perfusion. Significant studies have been made in the gynecological application of Doppler sonography and screening for ovarian and uterine malignancy. In obstetrics, Doppler sonography has allowed unprecedented insight in the pathophysiology of human fetal development. In a relatively short period of time, 3D and 4D ultrasound has proved to be a useful clinical tool in almost all sections of gynecology and obstetrics. In this book the authors explain the significance of each of the discussed subjects in an effective way, by integrating important and updated information and illustrative examples. The contributors of this edition have made significant improvements, included updated information and a few unique illustrations. Each chapter has been reviewed and revised to focus on the clinicians needs in ultrasound practice. The educational impact of the book is further enhanced by adding a manual for sonographers and physicians entitled Clinical Sonographic Pearls that was created for better organization of important clinical presentation-based information."
