Book Synopsis Unlocked Memories by : Alexey Vinogradov
Download or read book Unlocked Memories written by Alexey Vinogradov and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlocked Memories is a collection of memories that were shared by Russians who witnessed the German invasion of the Leningrad region in 1941. All were children or young people during World War Two and nearly all were natives of Luga, Oredezh, or villages that were clustered around these two towns. Each lived under German rule after the Leningrad region was overrun and occupied by the enemy. The authors collected these memories over a period of ten years. Many of the memories had been locked away for decades; some to spare others from embarrassment, some for reasons that concerned the subject's welfare of the welfare of a relative or friend, and others because it was too painful to reflect upon them. All were recorded chronologically and have been placed within a historical narrative.
Book Synopsis Soviet Nationalities in German Wartime Strategy, 1941-1945 by : Alex Alexiev
Download or read book Soviet Nationalities in German Wartime Strategy, 1941-1945 written by Alex Alexiev and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1982 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the determinants and character of German policies toward the Soviet non-Russian nationalities and their effects on the Soviet and German war efforts and on the nationalities themselves. Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of the nature and magnitude of military collaboration with the Germans by the non-Russian nationalities, in an attempt to examine the military exploitability of the political warfare opportunities that presented themselves. Section II outlines the attitudes toward the Soviet nationalities prevalent among the Nazi leadership and the role envisaged for them in a postwar German-dominated Europe, and juxtaposes them on the views of German officials who did not share Nazi dogma and advocated a more pragmatic approach. German policies in the occupied non-Russian territories and their implications are examined in Sec. III. Section IV describes the different types and degrees of military collaboration with the Germans. The main conclusions are summarized in Sec. V.

Book Synopsis Captured Soviet Generals by : Aleksander A. Maslov
Download or read book Captured Soviet Generals written by Aleksander A. Maslov and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this work, Maslov relates the fate of those generals who fell into German captivity. After relating the grisly circumstances of their ordeal in German prisoner-of-war camps, Maslov then tells the sordid tale of how an ungrateful Soviet state condemned for treason against their homeland many of those who had served it loyally both in combat and in German prisoner-of-war camps. By exploiting unprecedented archival materials, Maslov demonstrates how Stalin and the Soviet security organs condemned and shot many of the returnee-generals, most on trumped-up charges, in part as scapegoats for the real crimes committed by Stalin and the Soviet military leadership during the tragic initial period of the war."--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis After The Blitzkrieg: The German Army’s Transition To Defeat In The East by : Major Bob E. Willis Jr.
Download or read book After The Blitzkrieg: The German Army’s Transition To Defeat In The East written by Major Bob E. Willis Jr. and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 sparked a guerilla resistance unparalleled in modern history in scale and ferocity. In the wake of the initial invasion, the German Army began its struggle to secure a territory encompassing one million square miles and sixty-five million people and to pacify a growing partisan resistance. The German endeavor to secure the occupied areas and suppress the partisan movement in the wake of Operation Barbarossa illustrates the nature of the problem of bridging the gap between rapid, decisive combat operations and “shaping” the post-major conflict environment-securing populations and infrastructure and persuading people to accept the transition from a defeated government to a new one. In this regard, the German experience on the Eastern Front following Operation Barbarossa seems to offer a number of similarities to the U.S. experience in Iraq in the aftermath of OIF. This study highlights what may be some of the enduring qualities about the nature of the transition between decisive battle and political end state-particularly when that end state is regime change. It elaborates on the notion of decisive battle, how the formulation of resistance movements can be explained as complex adaptive systems, the potential of indigenous security forces and the influence of doctrine, cultural appreciation and interagency cooperation on operational-level transition planning.

Book Synopsis Nazi Policy on the Eastern Front, 1941 by : Alex J. Kay
Download or read book Nazi Policy on the Eastern Front, 1941 written by Alex J. Kay and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 and events on the Eastern Front that same year were pivotal to the history of World War II. It was during this year that the radicalization of Nazi policy -- through both an all-encompassing approach to warfare and the application of genocidal practices -- became most obvious. Germany's military aggression and overtly ideological conduct, culminating in genocide against Soviet Jewry and the decimation of the Soviet population through planned starvation and brutal antipartisan policies, distinguished Operation Barbarossa-the code name for the German invasion of the Soviet Union-from all previous military campaigns in modern European history. This collection of essays, written by young scholars of seven different nationalities, provides readers with the most current interpretations of Germany's military, economic, racial, and diplomatic policies in 1941. With its breadth and its thematic focus on total war, genocide, and radicalization, this volume fills a considerable gap in English-language literature on Germany's war of annihilation against the Soviet Union and the radicalization of World War II during this critical year. Alex J. Kay is the author of Exploitation, Resettlement, Mass Murder: Political and Economic Planning for German Occupation Policy in the Soviet Union, 1940-1941 and is an independent contractor for the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on War Consequences. Jeff Rutherford is assistant professor of history at Wheeling Jesuit University, where he teaches modern European history. David Stahel is the author of Operation Barbarossa and Germany's Defeat in the East and Kiev 1941: Hitler's Battle for Supremacy in the East.

Book Synopsis Odessa, 1941-1944 by : Alexander Dallin
Download or read book Odessa, 1941-1944 written by Alexander Dallin and published by Center For Romanian Studies. This book was released on 1998 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Odessa, 1941-1944 is a comprehensive study of the Romanian administration in Odessa and Transnistria during World War II. It draws a sharp contrast between occupation policies in Odessa and Transnistria, under Romanian administration, and those of Nazi-occupied areas of the Soviet Union. Originally prepared as a Rand Corporation report, it is essential reading for anyone interested in the occupation of Soviet territory during World War II and its consequences. Alexander Dallin provides a detailed study of the Romanian administration in Transnistria, illustrating important aspects of the development of this Soviet territory after the removal of the Communist system. Dallin argues that "The relative success of the Romanians (in contrast to German-held areas of the USSR) supports the thesis that the specific nature of the occupation policy and behavior mattered a good deal in determining the response of the subject population." He adds that "the Transnistrian experiment rapidly gained popular confidence through higher living standards and an atmosphere of greater relaxation. The absence of terror and forced labor, and greater opportunities for self-expression, both economic and cultural, go far to explain the overwhelming popular preference for Romanian over German rule." A noted expert in Soviet history, Alexander Dallin (1924-2000) was a former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies and professor emeritus of international history and political science at Stanford University in California. His other books include German Rule in Russia, 1941-1945. The book includes an introduction by Larry L. Watts, an American specialist on the history of Romania during World War II.
