Edited and introduced by renowned writer and authority on fairy tales, Jack Zipes, professor emeritus of German and comparative literature at the University of Minnesota. Book excerpt: The famous fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm - stories like Snow White , Red Riding Hood , and Rumplestiltskin - are know to millions of people around the world and are deeply embedded in the collective psyche. In this charming account, writer and scholar Valerie Paradiz reveals the true story of how the fairy tales came to be. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, collectors and editors of more than 200 folk stories, were major German intellects of the nineteenth century, contemporaries of Goethe and Schiller. But as Paradiz reveals here, the romantic image of the two brothers traveling the countryside, transcribing tales told to them by peasants, is a far cry from the truth. In fact, more than half the fairy tales the Grimm brothers collected were actually contributed by their educated female friends from the bourgeois and aristocratic classes. While German folkloric scholars-all of them male-fancied themselves the keepers of the cultural flame, it was a handful of women who ensured that millions would know the stories of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella by heart. Set against the backdrop of the chaotic Napoleonic wars and the years of high German romanticism, Clever Maids chronicles one of the most fascinating literary collaborations in European history and brilliantly captures the intellectual spirit of the men and women of the age. Even more, it illuminates the ways in which the Grimm tales, with their mythic portrayals of courage, sacrifice, and betrayal, still speak so powerfully to us today.

Book excerpt: The Brothers Grimm, Jacob as well as Wilhelm Grimm, released a selection of German fairy tale Stories titled "Household Stories by the Grimm" in 1812. " Kinder- und Hausm''rchen " (Childhood and Household Tales) is the original German title. The collection has acquired worldwide fame and also includes popular tales as "Cinderella," "The Frog Prince," "Hansel and Gretel," "Rhapunzel," "Snow White" and "Rumpelstilt kin." These tales had been compiled by the Grimm Brothers who were academics, philologists as well as cultural researchers involved in a bigger project aiming at protecting as well as determining the cultural heritage of the German-speaking areas. They gathered stories from different oral and written sources, aiming to capture them in a form close to their folk roots. The tales in "Household Stories" vary considerably; Some are moralistic and light while others are dark and have themes unsuitable for kids today. These stories have had several adaptations over time, sometimes softening the darker aspects to make them much more attractive to a contemporary young audience. The Grimm Brothers' work has broader importance than merely entertainment. The collection is an excellent scholarly asset that offers detailed information on the cultural and social history of german - speaking world. The stories are translated into many other languages and form a crucial part of the Western literary tradition, art, influencing literature, popular culture and film worldwide.

Book excerpt: Germany has had a profound influence on English stories for children. The Brothers Grimm, The Swiss Family Robinson and Johanna Spyri's Heidi quickly became classics but, as David Blamires clearly articulates in this volume, many other works have been fundamental in the development of English chilren's stories during the 19th Centuary and beyond. Telling Tales is the first comprehensive study of the impact of Germany on English children's books, covering the period from 1780 to the First World War. Beginning with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, moving through the classics and including many other collections of fairytales and legends (Musaus, Wilhelm Hauff, Bechstein, Brentano) Telling Tales covers a wealth of translated and adapted material in a large variety of forms, and pays detailed attention to the problems of translation and adaptation of texts for children. In addition, Telling Tales considers educational works (Campe and Salzmann), moral and religious tales (Carove, Schmid and Barth), historical tales, adventure stories and picture books (including Wilhelm Busch's Max and Moritz) together with an analysis of what British children learnt through textbooks about Germany as a country and its variegated history, particularly in times of war.

Book excerpt: They saw their work in gathering the fairy tales of Europe as an academic exercise, but the Brothers Grimm-aka German folklorists and linguists JAKOB (1785-1863) and WILHELM GRIMM (1786-1859)-are today remembered best as tellers of dark stories for children. Here, in one compact volume, are 53 of the most beloved of the stories they assembled, from well-known ones such as "The Sleeping Beauty," "The Frog Prince," "Rapunzel," and "Hansel and Grethel" to more obscure ones including "The Rabbit's Bride," "Six Soldiers of Fortune," "Faithful John," and "The Three Spinsters." A treasury of classic stories, this replica of an 1886 edition-translated by English writer LUCY CRANE (1842-1882), with beautiful line drawings by her brother, William Crane-will delight children and adults alike.

This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's and Household Tales (German: Kinder- und Hausm?rchen), commonly known as Grimms' Fairy Tales (German: Grimms M?rchen), is a collection of German fairy tales published by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the Brothers Grimm. On December 20, 1812, the Grimms published the first volume of the first edition. It contained 86 stories. The second volume of 70 stories was published in 1814. For the second edition, two volumes were issued in 1819 and a third in 1822, totalling 170 tales. The third edition appeared in 1837; fourth edition, 1840; fifth edition, 1843; sixth edition, 1850; seventh edition, 1857. Stories were added, and also deleted, from one edition to the next, until the seventh held 211 tales. All editions were extensively illustrated, first by Philipp Grot Johann and, after his death in 1892, by Robert Leinweber. The first volumes were much criticized because they were considered unsuitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter. Many changes through the editions ? such as turning the wicked mother of the first edition in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such criticism. They removed sexual references―such as Rapunzel's innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus na?vely revealing her pregnancy and the prince's visits to her stepmother―but, in many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was increased. In 1825, the Grimms published their Kleine Ausgabe or "small edition," a selection of 50 tales designed for child readers. This children's version went through ten editions between 1825 and 1858. The work of the Brothers Grimm influenced other collectors, both inspiring them to collect tales and leading them to similarly believe, in a spirit of romantic nationalism, that the fairy tales of a country were particularly representative of it, to the neglect of cross-cultural influence. Among those influenced were the Russian Alexander Afanasyev, the Norwegians Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, the English Joseph Jacobs, and Jeremiah Curtin, an American who collected Irish tales. *wiki
