Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of German Lyrics: Selected and Edited With Notes and Vocabulary Some of my readers will undoubtedly be surprised at finding only two poems Of Schiller included in the collee tion. May I point to the length of these two poems, 270 lines? Even to Goethe I have given only 362 lines. Why did I choose these two poems? The lighter lyric verse of Schiller is not representative of the poet nor would it have enriched the Anthology with a new note. I have to express my sincerest thanks to Baron Tauchnitz, as well as to Mr. Walter Scott, for their courteous permission to make use of my own versions, respectively, from the Freiligrath Poems in the Tauchnitz edition, and from the Heine of the Canterbury Series. Book excerpt: Walsh's book should be a vade mecum for anyone who would teach the Carmina Burana on any level and be of considerable value in general to medievalists, comparatists, and those in related disciplines.--New England Classical Newsletter and Journal "Teachers, students, and any reader interested in medieval lyric will find this volume a clear and useful approach to intrinsically interesting texts.--Renaissance Quarterly "The most scholarly and most helpful presentation of a group of these captivating lyrics that has yet appeared in English.--Peter Dronke, University of Cambridge "A superb volume, fully worthy of these famous but often misunderstood poems. P. G. Walsh's unmatched erudition in Latin literature furnishes lucid grammatical explanations, incisive analysis of goliardic literary values and technique, and illuminating references to ancient and medieval parallels. His prose translations make the poems accessible also to those with little or no Latin.--Janet M. Martin, Princeton University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature in Middle High German Lyrics While there is no lack of studies in the development of a sentiment for nature in the literary and other arts, and in particular, studies of the feeling for nature in ancient and medieval times, there has been heretofore rather a dearth of statistical investigations of definite, limited fields. The present monograph attempts such an investigation for the German lyrics of the Middle Ages. Not that it is the first work of its kind, however. A very thorough and enlightening study is Miss Gertrud Stockmayer's doctoral dissertation, "Uber Naturgefuhl in Deutschland im 10. und 11. Jahrhundert" (published in the Beitrage zur Kulturgeschichte des Mittelalters und der Renaissance, Heft 4, 1910). A procedure similar to that followed by Miss Stockmayer had already been adopted by Arthur B. Cooke in his dissertation, "The Development of the Nature-Sense in the German Lyric: a Comparison of the two Great Lyric Periods" (Univ. of Virginia Studies in Germanic Languages, 1902), in so far as he groups his material under headings such as "The Seasons," "Birds and Flowers," etc. As the present monograph was undertaken with the idea of arriving objectively at the facts in the case of the medieval lyrics, and the author therefore wished to preserve as far as possible an impartial attitude in approaching his subject, Mr. Cooke's work was not consulted until after the completion of the investigation whose results are here presented. Since my conclusions differ somewhat from those of Mr. Cooke, it may be permitted to discuss his treatise in this place. My principal disagreement with Mr. Cooke is not so much in his facts as in his interpretation of them. He is perhaps somewhat harsh in his judgment of the medieval poets, and a slight shift of the point of view would result in a statement not materially different verbally but of a decidedly different spirit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference is a comprehensive guide to literature written 500 to 1500 A.D., a period that gave rise to some of the world's most enduring and influential works, such as Dante's Commedia, Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, and a large body of Arthurian lore and legend. While its emphasis is upon medieval English texts and society, this reference also covers Islamic, Hispanic, Celtic, Mongolian, Germanic, Italian, and Russian literature and Middle Age culture. Longer entries provide thorough coverage of major English authors such as Chaucer and Sir Thomas Malory, and of genre entries, such as drama, lyric, ballad, debate, saga, chronicle, and hagiography. Shorter entries examine particular literary works; significant kings, artists, explorers, and religious leaders; important themes, such as courtly love and chivalry; and major historical events, such as the Crusades. Each entry concludes with a brief biography. The volume closes with a list of the most valuable general works for further reading.
