Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Eliot's Life, as Related in Her Letters and Journals is a specific kind of autobiography of English author Mary Ann Evans, better known as George Eliot. This book is based on her correspondence and journals, edited by her husband John Walter Cross. His goal in assembling this work was to make known the woman, as well as the author, through the presentation of her daily life and to show the development of her intellect and character. Eliot was married to Cross only for six months before she died, leaving him with the task to present her life to the public. By arranging all the letters and journals so as to form one connected whole, keeping the order of their dates, the editor and the husband managed to combine a narrative of day-to-day life of this prominent literary figure.

Book excerpt: Chapter I. In the foregoing introductory sketch I have endeavored to present the influences to which George Eliot was subjected in her youth, and the environment in which she grew up; I am now able to begin the fulfilment of the promise on the titlepage, that the life will be related in her own letters; or, rather, in extracts from her own letters, for no single letter is printed entire from the beginning to the end. I have not succeeded in obtaining any between 6th January, 1836, and 18th August, 1838; but from the latter date the correspondence becomes regular, and I have arranged it as a continuous narrative, with the names of the persons to whom the letters are addressed in the margin. The slight thread of narrative or explanation which I have written to elucidate the letters, where necessary, will hereafter occupy an inside margin, so that the reader will see at a glance what is narrative and what is correspondence, and will be troubled as little as possible with marks of quotation or changes of type. The following opening letter of the series to Miss Lewis describes a first visit to London with her brother: [Sidenote: Letter to Miss Lewis, 18th Aug. 1838.] Let me tell you, though, that I was not at all delighted with the stir of the great Babel, and the less so, probably, owing to the circumstances attending my visit thither.

This book explores musical reference in her work and investigates contexts such as Eliot's friendship with Wagner, the legacy of Romanticism, music's role in scientific theory, and the ambivalent status of female musicality. The book establishes how intensely Eliot's musical allusions are informed by her contemporary culture and offers a fresh view of the experimental writing through which she took literary realism into previously uncharted regions.

Book Synopsis George Eliot's Life, as Related in her Letters and Journals by : George Eliot
Download or read book George Eliot's Life, as Related in her Letters and Journals written by George Eliot and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known for his brief marriage to George Eliot, John Walter Cross (1840-1924) compiled this three-volume 'autobiography' of 1885 from his late wife's journals and letters. Eliot was never married to her long-term partner G. H. Lewes, and she courted further scandal when she married Cross, twenty years her junior, in the spring of 1880. While these volumes offer a valuable insight into Eliot's private reflections, what is perhaps most telling is the material left out or rewritten in Cross' efforts to lend his wife's unconventional life some respectability, which he does at the expense of what one reviewer described as Eliot's 'salt and spice'. George Eliot's Life will be of particular interest to scholars of nineteenth-century biography and literature. Volume 2 covers the years 1858-1866, including Eliot's initial success in fiction and her travels in Italy, Holland, and along the Rhine.
