Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Resources of the Neenach Quadrangle, California Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith Bulletin 153, Geology and Mineral Resources of the Neenach Quadrangle, California, prepared under the direction of Olaf P. Jenkins, Chief of the Division of Mines, Department of Natural Resources. The report is accompanied by a number of maps, charts, and illustrations, including a detailed geologic map, lithographed in color, of the 15-minute Neenach quadrangle. The area of this quadrangle is nearly 250 square miles, covering portions of the Tehachapi Mountains and Antelope Valley in Kern and Los Angeles Counties. Two famous earthquake fault zones, the San Andreas and Garlock faults, pass through the area mapped. Their junction point lies several miles to the west at Gorman and Lebec where State Highway 99 cuts through the Tejon Pass. It is significant that the area mapped contains tin deposits discovered and prospected during World War I. These, together with gold, copper, tungsten, molybdenum, marble and limestone, crushed rock, volcanic ash and ground water, are described in this bulletin. The author, John H. Wiese, prepared the report while in the employ of the United States Geological Survey and in connection with graduate study at the University of California at Los Angeles. Cooperating with the Federal Survey and the State University, the State Division has helped to sponsor the undertaking and is publishing the results of the work as one of its series of bulletins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Deposits of Barstow Quadrangle, San Bernardino County, California: And Thermal Properties of Ceramic Materials From Barstow Quadrangle, California Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith Bulletin 165, Geology and Mineral Deposits of Barstow Quadrangle, San Bernardino County, California, prepared under the direction of Olaf P. Jenkins, Chief, Division of Mines, Department of Natural Resources. The report is accompanied by detailed colored geologic and economic mineral maps, charts and cross sections, and many other illustrations. The area covered by the report lies in the Mojave Desert and embraces 976 square miles, a 30-minute quadrangle. The mineral deposits described consist of limestone, dolomite, ganister (quartzite), barite, magnesite, pyrophyllite, mica-quartz fillers and ornamental stone such as marble and granite, which are the chief non-metallic minerals of the area; gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, zinc and tungsten, the metallic minerals. The underground water supplies of the area are also discussed as they are related to the geology. The report represents one of the basic geologic map projects of the Division of Mines. It has been prepared by a member of the staff, Oliver E. Bowen, Jr. Included with Bulletin 165 is another report, representing the results of laboratory investigations of some peculiar ceramic materials found in the area. This report is entitled, Thermal Properties of Ceramic Materials From Barstow Quadrangle, California. It has been prepared by Joseph A. Pask, professor of Ceramic Engineering, University of California, in cooperation with Oliver E.Bowen, Jr., of the Division of Mines. Bulletin 165 should be of value in the development of all manner of natural resources found in the area and especially of assistance in the development of the mineral industry in this desert region. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of the Saltdale Quadrangle, California, And, Mineral Deposits of Saltdale Quadrangle Mountains. Elevations range from feet at the dry lake to feet in El Paso Mountains. Formations within the Saltdale quadrangle may be divided into two main groups, a pre - Cretaceous basement complex, and a Cenozoic series of continental sediments and volcanics. The basement complex consists of pre-cambrian Rand schist, pre Cambrian Mesquite schist, the late Paleozoic Garlock series feet of shale, chert, quartzite, limestone, and volcanics), and plutonic intrusive rocks, probably Jurassic, ranging from granite to quartz diorite. The Garlock series, Mesquite schist, and plutonic rocks crop out in El Paso Mountains; but only the Rand schist and plutonic rocks are exposed in the Rand Mountains. The Cenozoic rocks consist of the Goler formation feet of continental sediments, probably Miocene), the Ricardo formation feet of Pliocene to Pleistocene continental sediments, tufi, and lava), and the Black Mountain basalt (100 feet of Pleistocene lava). These three formations crop out in El Paso Mountains, and are separated by unconformities. El Paso Mountains constitute a block uplifted along El Paso fault at its southeastern base, and tilted northwestward. The Mesquite schist and Garlock series strike about N. 20 W. And dip steeply east. Most of the intrusive bodies that crop out in El Paso Mountains likewise follow this trend. The Cenozoic rocks crop out on the northwestern ank of the mountains and dip northwestward toward Indian Wells Valley. The Rand Mountains within Saltdale quadrangle probably constitute a block uplifted along a buried fault at its northwestern base, and tilted gently southeastward. Within the quadrangle, these mountains consist mainly of granitic rocks; but one remnant of Rand schist is exposed in the northeastern portion of the block. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geologic Reconnaissance of the Northern Coast Ranges and Klamath Mountains, California: With a Summary of the Mineral Resources Northwestern California has been divided into two provinces: the northern Coast Ranges in the southern and southwestern part, and the Klamath Mountains in the northeastern part (fig. The boundary between the two provinces, as drawn by the writer, differs from the boundary originally drawn by Diller (1902, pl. These provinces differ from one another in topography, in the character of the rocks, and to a large extent in the mineral resources. The northern Coast Ranges and Klam ath Mountains constitute the major subject of this te port, but parts of two other provinces are shown on the geologic map. A narrow strip of the Sacramento Valley along the east ank of the northern Coast Ranges is included because the geology along this strip is impor tant to an understanding of the geology of the northern Coast Ranges. A part of the Cascade Range province is shown in the northeast part of the map. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
