Book excerpt: This report analyzes airborne gamma spectrometric data acquired over the Endako porphyry district in British Columbia in 1995, along with surface & lithogeochemical data, to assess their utility as an aid to geological mapping and mineral exploration. It begins with background on the geological setting, including surficial & bedrock geology. Results of analyses are then presented with regard to correlations between airborne & surficial mapping measurements, and the effects of various surficial features on measured airborne radioelement concentrations.

Book excerpt: A distinctive group of giant quartz veins characterizes the Great Bear magmatic zone east of Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories. They are topographically conspicuous, have attracted attention from mineral prospectors, and contain occurrences of uranium, copper sulphides, and other minerals. This paper presents results of the first study of fluid inclusions from giant quartz veins in this zone. Samples were studied from the Crowfoot and Ted uranium occurrences. It begins with descriptions of the regional geological setting, the quartz veins and associated stockworks, and the two occurrences studied. It then describes the fluid inclusion study methodology, petrographic observations, and temperature & salinity determinations of the fluid inclusion samples. The results are discussed with respect to the multi-stage developmental history of the quartz veins.

Book excerpt: The Upper Triassic sections outcropping on the Queen Charlotte Islands contain outstanding successions of conodont and radiolarian microfossils. This report focuses on the successions about the Carnian-Norian boundary at several key localities. This boundary may coincide with an interval of significant change in global fauna and flora, particularly in terrestrial habitats. The purpose of the study reported is to demonstrate faunal change that may potentially be used in global correlation and definition of the Carnian-Norian boundary, and thus contribute towards the resolution of historical events that date from that time. The report summarizes the radiolarian change within the boundary interval identified primarily by conodonts but supplemented by some molluscan data.

Book excerpt: This study examines aspects of the geological evolution of the Sharbot Lake domain and compares it with that of neighbouring domains & terranes in the Central metasedimentary belt, Grenville Province, Ontario. The study reports uranium-lead zircon & titanite geochronological ages for a granodiorite phase of the Pakenham intrusion from the northern part of the Sharbot Lake domain. The new data expand the known range of magmatism in this part of the belt, elucidate the early tectonic evolution of the domain, and constrain the timing of overprinting metamorphism. Possible links between the Pakenham structure and the Wolf Grove structure to the south-east are also discussed.

Book excerpt: This research focuses on the possibility of a coastal migration and/or colonization route via the Queen Charlotte Islands during the period 15,000-8,500 years before present. It assesses two aspects of the changing environment in the Islands during this period: sea level change and available edible biomass for early human populations. Potential food sources of an early coastal migrating population would likely include intertidal edible molluscs. The research examines high-stand deposit locations ranging from 1 to 18 metres above sea level for evidence of edible mollusc shells. Dating of the samples collected will provide a record of high-stand elevations across the Islands, thereby providing a data set with which to model isostatic sea level response on the British Columbia continental margin.

Book excerpt: Presents geochronological age determinations of zircons from eight plutons in the Grenville Province, Ontario (Oso and Mountain Grove plutons in the Sharbot Lake domain; Silver Lake & Bennett Bay plutons and Fall River mangeritic augen gneiss associated with the Maberly shear zone; North Crosby & Pike Lake plutons in the north-west sheared part of the Frontenac terrane; and the Beales Mills pluton in the interior of the Frontenac terrane). The results are used to propose a re-interpretation of the tectonics of the Frontenac suite and the origin of the magmas responsible.

Book excerpt: Reports findings of reconnaissance seismic surveys conducted on the north-east Grand Bank to study the near-surface sediments, assess the presence and characteristics of seabed geotechnical hazards, and examine the role of Quaternary glaciation and sea-level fluctuation on sediment distribution and characteristics. The regional setting is first reviewed and a refined regional stratigraphy is described based on new seismic data. Till deposits and moraine fields as observed from the seismic studies of the shelf glacial sediments are described. Finally, interpretations of the glacial history of the study area are offered and implications of the findings for offshore engineering related to oil & gas development are discussed.

Book excerpt: Insight into the Archean thermal & tectonic regime may be offered by studying the late Archean Quetico alkaline province, a suite of carbonate-bearing magmatic complexes associated with a recently discovered carbonatite body in north-west Ontario. This paper attempts to give a broad overview of the character of several such bodies examined in the Quetico alkaline province in summer 1999. It first describes the general geology of the study area and the chemical compositions of the intrusions studied. It then describes the field characteristics of the North Elbow Lake, Whalen lake, Harnett Lake, and Beaverhouse Lake intrusions. Origin of the intrusions is also discussed.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a determination of the evolution characteristics of a set of shale pore-structure components (storage porosity, connecting porosity, flow path size, and flow path density) with compaction. The pore-structure component data are derived from bulk petrophysical data (permeability, porosity, and formation factor as a function of increased pressure) reported for seven shale & mudstone samples. Basic pore-structure models and theory are also presented.
