Book excerpt: In many sedimentary sections recording extreme soft-sediment and tectonic deformation, the origin of outcrop-scale structures is commonly difficult to resolve. Numerous soft-sediment deformational features developed in the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian Tesnus Formation in the Marathon Basin in response to rapid sedimentation rates and tectonic instability. Soft-sediment structures were overprinted during Late Pennsylvanian to Early Permian compressional deformation that emplaced allochthonous and parautochthonous rocks of the Marathon Basin. Because of its sedimentary and tectonic history, the Tesnus Formation provides an ideal section for evaluating the role of soft-sediment and tectonic processes in producing outcrop-scale structures. The Tesnus Formation was rapidly deposited in deep water in an unstable, migrating foredeep. Paleocurrent data derived from sole marks on turbidite sandstone beds in the study area indicate that the overall trend of sediment dispersal during Tesnus deposition was from southeast to northwest. The most well-developed trend is in an arc between N20°W to N30°W. Extensive synsedimentary and early-post-depositional deformation, particularly sediment liquefaction and clastic intrusion, accompanied sedimentation. The most common clastic injection features in the Tesnus Formation are dikes, which are interpreted to be coeval with previously undescribed clastic intrusions including sills in excess of 2.5 m thick, cylindrical clastic "plugs", and composite structures that are partly concordant and partly discordant. Clastic injections are interpreted to have formed under conditions of essentially non-deviatoric stress, and commonly in response to bedding-parallel (horizontal) pressure gradients. Clastic injections are not systematically oriented locally or regionally, provide no information regarding paleogeography (paleoslope), and are not related to any later structural trends. "Decompaction" of ptygmatically folded dikes has commonly been used to determine the extent of post-injection compaction, but data from the Tesnus Formation indicate that the method conventionally used for determining sediment compaction and dike injection depth is unreliable. Tectonically generated structures post-date all soft-sediment deformation and are here interpreted to have formed in a uniformly-oriented, compressional stress field with a maximum compression direction oriented between approximately Nl9°W and N22°W. The Dagger Flat Anticlinorium, a major structural culmination west and southwest of the study area, acted as a structural buttress that greatly influenced structural evolution in the eastern part of the Marathon Basin. Compression and rotation of the Tesnus/Dimple/Haymond flysch package against and around the Dagger Flat Anticlinorium modified the orientation of pre-rotation structures and changed the orientation of rocks in the map area with respect to prevailing stresses. The sequence of Paleozoic tectonic events affecting rocks in the study area is interpreted as follows. 1. Generation of first-stage joints. 2. Rotation of the Tesnus/Dimple/Haymond flysch package around the Dagger Flat Anticlinorium. 3. Flexural-slip folding of the flysch package. 4. Formation of major thrust faults and related tear faults. Thrust sheet rotation around the Dagger Flat Anticlinorium. Formation of first-stage extensional microfaults with northeasterly trends in major thrust décollement zones. 5. Space constraints along the northeast margin of the Dagger Flat Anticlinorium prevent further thrust sheet rotation. 6. Uniform compression continues. Thrust motion is no longer influenced by the Dagger Flat Anticlinorium, but is directed parallel with maximum compression direction (Nl9°W to N22°W). Second-stage joints form. Incremental strike-slip motion along major thrusts causes formation of east-northeasterly striking contraction microfaults and second-stage extensional microfaults.

Book excerpt: The Mississippian (Visean-Serpukhovian) Barnett Formation is a lithologic unit composed primarily of laminated siliceous mudstone and calcareous siliceous mudstone. The Barnett Formation was deposited in the Fort Worth Basin, a marine foreland basin that formed as a result of the early Ouachita Orogeny from the collision of Laurasia and Gondwana. In this study we used a variety of geochemical methods to provide a detailed assessment of the chemostratigraphy and paleoceanography of the Barnett Formation in the southern end of the Fort Worth Basin in Texas. Various aspects of the Barnett Formation studied include: degree of basin restriction and deep-water renewal time, redox conditions, organic composition, paleoclimatic indicators, and bulk geochemistry. Eight drill cores along a northeast-southwest transect of the basin in central Texas were evaluated for this study. Each core was scanned at a 1-foot (~0.3m) interval with an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer to provide quantitative analysis of major (e.g. Fe, Si, Al) and trace (e.g. Mo, U, V) elements. In addition, total organic carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon (TIC), percent total nitrogen, and stable isotope (ð13C, ð15N) data were gathered from five of the cores. Percent sulfur data were gathered from three of the cores. The physical paleoceanography of the Barnett Formation reveals that the area of Barnett deposition in the southern Fort Worth Basin was hydrographically restricted. The southern basin was more restricted than comparable modern anoxic basins during Barnett time. This basin restriction led to deep-water renewal times longer than those of comparable modern anoxic basins and shorter than those for the Barnett Formation of the northern Fort Worth Basin. Deep-water renewal times for the southern basin range from 557-1383 years. The chemical paleoceanography of the Barnett Formation reveals that the Barnett strata were deposited under anoxic to euxinic conditions for essentially the entire depositional timeframe in the mid-late Mississippian. The southernmost end of the transect was deposited initially under anoxic conditions and later under oxic conditions. In addition, high ð15N values (average 7.76) indicate intensified denitrification occurred in the water column. The Barnett strata in the southern Fort Worth Basin is organic rich with total organic carbon (TOC) ranging from 0.07-13.25% with an average TOC of 4%. The organic matter was determined to be primarily of marine origin. The organic matter had ð13 Corg values ranged from -24 x 10−3 to -32 x 10−3 with an average ð13 Corg value of -30 x 10−3. The carbon-nitrogen ratio values ranged from 1.6 to 92.3 with an average C/N ratio of 21.78. The Barnett Formation was deposited during a second-order eustatic high stand during a warmer, interglacial period based upon stable nitrogen isotope ratios. The bulk geochemistry of the Barnett Formation indicates that it is composed primarily of siliceous mudstone and calcareous siliceous mudstone with significant phosphate and sulfide phases present.

Book excerpt: The Barnett Formation in the Llano Uplift region of the southern Fort Worth Basin of north-central Texas is an Osagean-Chesterian age siliciclastic mudrock whose deposition was influenced by the structurally stable Llano Uplift, topographic variabilities, and a long-term, second-order sea-level rise. Pervious work has mostly focused on the producing northern portion of the basin. The present study uses a group of 29 cores to: (1) characterize the Barnett lithofacies, (2) define the depositional setting of each lithofacies and develop a coherent depositional model, (3) identify stacking patterns and correlative surfaces, and (4) establish a viable sequence stratigraphic framework for the succession. On the basis of core data, the Barnett strata are interpreted to have been deposited in a basinal setting, below storm-weather wave-base, under predominantly anoxic bottom waters. The analysis of core and thin sections revealed four dominant lithofacies: (1) laminated siliceous mudstone, (2) laminated calcareous siliceous mudstone, (3) skeletal packstone, and (4) phosphatic packstone and grainstone. Facies stacking patterns were correlated using phosphatic packstone facies as regional marker beds. These beds coincide with changes in clay-mineral abundances, revealed by chemostratigraphic data, and their occurrences were used to subdivide the Barnett strata into lower, middle, and upper units. The lower Barnett is characterized by cyclic sedimentation of extrabasinal clays and has the greatest thickness variability related to accumulation of the calcareous siliceous mudstone facies in graben structures. The middle Barnett is characterized by an increase in extrabasinal clay abundance compared to the lower Barnett, and the upper Barnett is characterized by a decrease in the extrabasinal clay abundance compared to the lower and middle Barnett. The phosphatic packstone facies is sourced from the outer shelf/upper slope of the adjacent Chappel Shelf and is interpreted to represent cycle tops within the aggradational stacking pattern that characterized sediment accumulation style during the second-order sea-level rise that occurred throughout Barnett deposition. The findings contribute to the understanding of the stratal architecture and depositional history of the Barnett deep-water mudrocks and are used to refine the lithofacies variability of the Barnett Formation.
